REVIEW

Electronic Arts (EA) has released a free download of the original Command & Conquer Red Alert on their web site as part of the celebration of its 13th anniversary as a way of marketing their upcoming release Command & Conquer Red Alert 3.

Red Alert 2 free as well?

Yes, you can also get Red Alert 2 for free… as long as you pre-order Red Alert 3. Pretty smart way to market their new game right?

For now, if you have not had the chance to even play Red Alert 1, we encourage you to download it, try it, and share it at your heart’s contempt on FrostWire. I for one, played this game when it first came out until I could no more, it’s a truly entertaining live strategy game you won’t have enough off, I bet you’ll love it.

    Hi there

Likewise having some serious issues with getting this installed. Downloaded in two files, one for Allies and Soviet discs which had the XP Patch and .iso. …And miscellaneous marketing rubbish ;P

Right. So OS is XP. First I used Daemon Tools to open the .iso for the Allies disc. Explored CD, changed properties of Setup to Win 95 Compatability (the Setup .exe that is in the parent directory, not one of the others). When I tried to run it, nothing happened. No error messages or anything, just nothing.

Next I tried the same thing from a CD-R. Same result. Although the EXTRACTED archive was burned to the CD, maybe that has something to do with it???

Also tried running the Setup straight off the hard drive (with Win 95 compatability enabled) and that didn’t do anything either.

I’ve looked at the tip links etc, and followed ‘em to the letter, but it doesn’t seem to do anything.

Only conclusions I can draw is that the downloads are FUBAR or it just doesn’t like this computer.

Can anyone give me any pointers???

i found out that this is not a full game, it is how to get the cd version to work on xp and vista. it is no more than a strange kind of patch. basically, if you stick the original cd into a windows vista drive, it wont detect it. so you go and download the link on this page, to make it actually work. do not download this, try to find a transfer from rapidshare from a friend. this page will not work without the cd.

Check this link out if your having trouble installing Command and Conquer Red Alert 1 on Windows XP or Window's vista. I was having a bit of trouble myself getting the game to run, but it runs like a champ (complete with counterstrike and aftermath) now after watching this video. The dude explains everything well. Hope this helps:

Ok everybody! Here’s what I figured out so far to let you have, if my information is correct, So first of all, download either discs, or both. I currently have the Allied, so I may be wrong for the Soviet. Anyways, so you have it downloaded, right? I have it as a WinRAR file, so extract it to somewhere you know or right in that place. So you got it in folder form. Open it, and you’ll see some files. Look for the .iso one. Burn that onto a disc (CD-ROM). You can use something like Alcohol, MagicDisc, and stuff like that. Go to My Computer (I have Windows XP) and click on the disc you have burned the .iso to. It opens up a bunch of stuff like Install, Patch, Automenu and stuff like that. Because this game is for Windows 95, you’re going to have to change the compatibility. I think you go to Install. Click on the thing that says “Install” or “Setup”. When you load it up, it should say it’s for Windoes 95. So exit out and right click and go down to Properties. Click on that and tab over to Compatibility. It should have a few boxes and what not. Check the box that begins with “Run for” or something like that, and a box under it will unlock. It should say Windows 95, but if not, change it to Windows 95. Click Apply, and then Ok. After this, I’m guessing. I think you should run it and let it install. For it to work, I think, go back to Patch. Copy them over to the Install folder. Then double click on the PATCH.exe and it gives you the latest update for the game. Then just run the game, I guess.

Hope this helps you, I’ll info you when I figure out EVERYTHING.

Actually, it gives you a .iso to burn to a CD-ROM. You can use that to install RA instead of the original disc. I think the reason it really can’t read it is because it was for WINDOWS 95. RA1 only worked on Windows 95 before.

right click the install > go to properties > click the tab called compatibility > check run this program as… then select windows xp SP3 or sp2 or sp1 w.e. you wish should work does with windows 7

Just downloaded BOTH discs at around 4.8 MB/sec, no issues with the download links.
Maybe your connection is timing out towards the end.

Here’s a screenshot of the downloaded file, so you see I’m not telling lies.
