James Cameron (director of Titanic and Aliens) makes a comeback with Avatar, a 3D science fiction film epic set to be released on December 18. The story centers on Jake Sully, a paraplegic Marine who was sent to a distant moon called Pandora. The fascinating world is filled with exotic flora, fauna, valuable minerals - and a race of sentient humanoids called the Na'vi. Unwittingly, James is recruited to be a genetic hybrid of human and Na'vi, an Avatar. The mission of the Avatars is to exterminate the alien race. Soon enough, James gets caught in a struggle which can determine the fate of an entire species and their world.
Avatar stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, and Michelle Rodriguez. It's a story about love and redemption and it tries to make us think about what we've done to our fellow human beings and the planet we live in.
Cameron wanted "something that has this spoonful of sugar of all the action and the adventure and all that, which thrills me anyway as a fan, but also wanting to do something that has a conscience, that maybe in the enjoying of it makes you think a little bit about the way you interact with nature and your fellow man."
The film was shot using a camera system developed by James Cameron himself. It involves two technologies: motion capture animation and The Volume. The first allows scenes to be shot in real time with a computer generated background.
According to Cameron, "It’s like a big, powerful game engine. If I want to fly through space, or change my perspective, I can. I can turn the whole scene into a living miniature and go through it on a 50 to 1 scale." The Volume on the other hand is a small camera attached to the actors' heads that captures every detail of their facial expressions and transmits them into their CG counterparts.
There's some major anticipation building up for this movie so don't miss it in December!
