Fans of the Avatar: The Last Airbender cartoon series on Nickelodeon will surely enjoy this sneak peak! Paramount has announced that the live-action movie version of the popular and multi-awarded TV series, The Last Airbender, will be released on July 2010. M. Night Shyamalan (of The Sixth Sense fame) wrote and directed this much-anticipated film about growing up and saving the world. You might think that Avatar is for kids but think again - it has actually gained a following from all ages because of the well-written story interwoven with a sense of humor that everyone can relate with.
Here is the official press release from Paramount Pictures:
Air, Water, Earth, Fire. Four nations tied by destiny when the Fire Nation launches a brutal war against the others. A century has passed with no hope in sight to change the path of this destruction. Caught between combat and courage, Aang (Noah Ringer) discovers he is the lone Avatar with the power to manipulate all four elements. Aang teams with Katara (Nicola Peltz), a Waterbender, and her brother, Sokka (Jackson Rathbone), to restore balance to their war-torn world.
So are you watching this? I definitely am! I started following the Avatar cartoons two years ago. No doubt it would be awesome to see on film, with cutting-edge special effects that make translating animation to real life more convincing. The premise of the movie is the same as in the animation so I'd also like to see how Shyamalan further explores the conflict between the four nations and of course, how he develops Aang and the other characters.
