If the entertainment quality of a movie is determined only by its cast, then Valentine's Day, directed by Garry Marshall, would be quickly categorized as a super huge hit.

However, the Valentine's Day actors could only do so much; try as they might, their acting (or any attempts at it), is simply and obviously not enough to make up for a lousy interconnection of a dozen loose stories.

Valentine's Day is set in Los Angeles, and it starts with a narration that everything in the film is going to take place on one day. How do several plots involving at least a dozen characters unravel creatively and meaningfully in a span of 90 minutes? Apparently, it couldn't be done.

In theaters February 12, 2010.

The film kicks off when Reed (Ashton Kutcher) wakes up beside his girlfriend Morley (Jessica Alba), and gently wakes her up to propose. The lines are cliché and fails to tickle even a relatively sentimental heart. It was not a good start, and it did not improve until the credits roll. There was an interesting scene when an unwilling mistress, Julia (Jennifer Garner), creates a scene in a restaurant to get back at her lying boyfriend. However, even her elegance under mortifying situation was not enough with the poor lines she had to deliver.

The British film Love Actually came to mind while watching the film, but only because it succeeded in what it was doing -- interconnecting lives, delivering romantic and silly one-liners, exploring the depths of pain, rising to the heights of joy, and more. Valentine's Day, meanwhile, merely dragged along and got more boring as it neared its ending. It was a very long 90 minutes because it failed to live up to the romance in its very title.
