Pixen - free graphic editing software for Mac

There's no denying that Mac users have their work cut out for them when it comes to looking for free or open source software and programs that they can use for their Macbooks. However, with Pixen available, they don't to worry much longer.

Pixen is a fully free graphics editor software that you can use for your Mac. Most people know that there are a lot of reliable graphics software out there for Windows and other systems but hardly for Mac. This software is especially suited for pixel artists, however, it does work perfectly with all types of artists.

There are plenty of users who have raved about Pixen's capabilities to render and edit graphics. Some even say that it is a much better software compared to ones that are for sale. As mentioned, the program itself is created for small scale or pixel art, but  it has proven to be a flexible tool and also works great when doing other types of graphic editing.

Most people think that with the existence of advanced rendering technology and new age consoles, the need for creating pixel art has already gone extinct. However, this is not the case. A need for pixel art or creating sprites is still in demand since there are still devices that have a limited capability. Devices like the Ipod or other mp3 players will not be able to handle fully loaded graphics, hence, small scale art is still much ideal.

Some of the best features that Pixen has include being able to customize the backgrounds. It also provides "smart palettes," alignment crosshair, auqa compliant and advanced grid customization.

Another nice thing about this program is that the makers have considered that working in such small levels might cause the artist to lose sight of the overall look of the artwork, hence, they have provided a separate window where the artist can view the entire artwork. This will help to put everything into perspective and allow the artist to judge whether any changes in the background needs to be done.

Despite all its bells and whistles, the program can intermittently lag behind and it is noticeably sluggish at certain times. This is especially true if heavy editing is done.

Nevertheless, Pixen triumphs over other programs in the same field. It is perfect for creating still or animated work and best of all, it's absolutely free.

"There's no denying that Mac users have their work cut out for them when it comes to looking for free or open source software and programs that they can use for their Macbooks. "

What ill informed rubbish! Ten seconds on a search engine will show you the vast amount of free/open source software available for Mac. Remember that OS X is based on Un*x, the result being that probably 90% of free/open source software available for Linux is also available for OS X. In the 2D graphics world I regularly use both Gimp and InkScape, both of which work perfectly well under X11 on the Mac. And through use of emulation or Boot Camp you can run any Windows based software as well!

"Most people know that there are a lot of reliable graphics software out there for Windows and other systems but hardly for Mac."

See above - If it's available for either Windows or other systems then the Mac can run it.

Pixen itself is a nice little piece of software which does what it does very well but please get the facts straight when it comes to your editorial!

Most people won't know how to install X11, that's the one big deterrents for having my 55 year old dad to try Gimp.

For computer saavy people like you and me it's probably easy to know the open source alternatives out there. I breathe Linux thorough my pores so for me it's only natural to look for the same stuff on mac, if there's not a binary I can have fun compiling it for darwin, but not everybody has the patience.
