Remember that OS X is based on Un*x, the result being that probably 90% of free/open source software available for Linux is also available for OS X. In the 2D graphics world I regularly use both Gimp and InkScape, both of which work perfectly well under X11 on the Mac. And through use of emulation or Boot Camp you can run any Windows based software as well!
