‘I Am The Agent’ is an alternative rock band from Newcastle/Central Coast of NSW, Australia. In their EP, ‘Volume I’, this band conveys a hauntingly beautiful and delicate sound which is achieved through a soft, clean and crisp guitar style and simple, emotional and gentle vocal melodies. Keeping this in mind, the band does not shy from taking things up a notch from time-to-time. All of these elements make it difficult to dismiss I Am The Agent into a specific and accurate category within the alternative rock genre. Furthermore, There is definitely a grunge element to this music and in some songs, this band reminds me of Nirvana. Specifically, the song ‘Leave’ reminds me of Nirvana’s song ‘Polly’ from their album ‘Nevermind’.

The title of the first song, ‘Melodramatic Popular Song’ gives a precise description of the tracks overall style. This is the catchiest song on the album and it has an interesting structure as sectional change is often achieved through the addition of new instruments (or the exclusion of others). In particular, the final section of this song leaves the viewer on a climax through the way in which a thick and rich texture is created. This comes as a result to a newly distorted guitar which plays an infectious melody over a clean one while the bass and drums also increase in volume. This contrasts to a large extent with initial sections which almost whisper in the ear of the audience.

I came across this band while watching a local ‘Battle of the Bands’ tournament at a university and after their impressive and mellow performance, I downloaded this EP as soon as I got the chance. I was not disappointed. I am The Agent’s EP is as engaging as their live performance!
