Notational Velocity is a note taking app. There are plenty of these for the Mac, but this note taker has got a lot of positive features. Aside from is syncing capability, Notational Velocity is also very simple to use. Created by Zachary Schneirov, it is one of the most popular open source programs for the Mac OS.

The interface is simple; you won’t find any extraneous icons or options. A spell checker runs as you type, allowing you to correct errors quickly. You can save notes as formatted HTML, rich text, plain text or as a single, encrypted database. Notational Velocity supports bold and italic formatting. All the functions can be done on the keyboard; you don’t need to use a mouse.

The omnibar can be used for searching and creating new notes. Work is saved instantaneously so you don’t have to worry about losing work to a power outage.

The minimalist design works very well. You want to use this app to take notes, nothing more. That’s exactly what you get. It is very quick and there is nothing to distract you. Fast typists will appreciate the fact that it doesn’t require a mouse. Of course you can use a mouse if you want.

Syncing works very fast and so does its search function. The encryption option is perfect in case you have to jot down something vital. The program loads very quickly too.

Notes you can create in Notational Velocity can be synced with Simplenote and Dropbox at the same time. Your notes can be opened in iA Writer, Elements, PlainText and other Dropbox-sync programs. This works whether the OS is iOS or not.
