Find My iPhone for the iPad and iPhone does exactly that, help you find your device if it is lost. It’s one of those apps from Apple you never want to use but will want to have around. Losing your device isn’t just a matter of money of course, as all your personal and business data is stored there as well.

To use this app you need to create an iCloud Account and get an Apple ID. When you turn Find My iPhone on, it will transmit your device’s geo-location data at regular intervals to your servers. This allows you to find your device from your web browser or any other device that lets you log in.

Note that some versions of iOS have this installed by default but others don’t. And in those versions where it is installed, it is not turned on by default.

You can also use Find My iPhone to locate other devices. To do this just launch Find My iPhone and type in your password and Apple ID. A screen will pop up and the last location reported for devices linked to your account will show up. Actually the app doesn’t just show you the location of those devices but allows you to track them almost in real time, so you can it on the move.

Assuming the worst and your tablet or phone is stolen, you can use the app to lock it with a code. In addition you can display a phone number on it. You also have the option to erase all the data on the device so they can’t get hold of the data.
