Duolingo, which was chosen by Apple as app of the year for 2013, makes it easy for you to learn English, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese for free. To use the app you need to log in or create an account in Google Plus or Facebook, and this feature makes it easy to continue your lessons. Once you’re logged in, you can begin the lessons in earnest, and they’re not just informative but engaging.

Each of the language programs are divided into levels from basic to advanced. These levels are then split into several lessons and focus on vocabulary sets and skills that take less than 15 minutes to complete. When you complete a level there will be a test to determine if you learned the lesson. You have to pass the test before moving on, a nice feature.

If you have some knowledge of the language you can run Duolingo’s diagnostics and go over the basic lessons and move on to the more advanced ones. In addition to this you can also go back and forth the lessons you have completed, another nice feature. But what really makes this app stand out are the questions and lessons, as they are very consistent. Aside from translating sentences you also have to type some dictations, identify images and more.
Learning another language can be frustrating but Duolingo takes out a lot of the frustration and makes the process a lot of fun. The app isn’t going to make you fluent overnight, but if you stick with the lessons you will learn the language in due time.
