Iranian-born Melbourne-based producer Amin Payne’s charismatic live shows have played a major role in establishing his position as one of the hottest talents in Australia’s bustling underground electronica scene. When the artist isn’t getting crowds pumped at a club, he’s probably collaborating with Persian classical artists or charming the socks off a sold-out venue alongside a 15-piece orchestra. He is adventurous and receptive and naturally, so is his music.
The concept of ‘genres’ hardly seems to exist in the mind of Amin Payne. Hip-hop, funk, soul, reggae and disco are popped into a blender on Lost Beats & Remixes to churn out a kaleidoscopic patchwork of styles, sounds and eras. Despite the convergence of such numerous influences, Amin’s music is subtle and subdued. He mostly aims at creating smooth and elegant pieces that are as suited to dancefloor abandon as they are to sitting back and zoning out. A strong, thumping rhythm provides the backbone for each track while pianos, guitars, synths and vocal bits intertwine in a breezy mix. The record opens with its most accessible offering, Vibrations, where Amin’s soothing production is complemented by equally mellow rapping. The track reminds of The Roots with its synthesis of rap and jazz instrumentals. Searching, on the other hand, draws its catchiness from its smartly-used vocal sample. The record’s second half (reserved for Amin’s remixes) sees Amin putting his exploratory nature to work on songs by hip-hop and R&B icons like Erykah Badu and Outkast, instilling their familiar tracks with a modern, club-ready vibe.
