We’ve featured tons of compilation records here on the blog before. Adding one more can’t hurt, right? So here’s a little something from indie label, Eitherorrecords.

The company is described as a label created by musicians for fellow musicians. Specializing in a variety of indie rock, punk, emo and summer rock bands, the label is the perfect haven for new artists.

This is the third compilation from them and it’s a nice venue to discover brand new groups to add to your regular playlist.

Either/Or and More Vol. 3 is one hefty compilation. It’s composed of about 30 tracks from the independent label, Eitheror Records.

The compilation is made up of bands that were part of their roster since they formed back in 2009. It’s a big list to go through but luckily there are plenty of great picks on here.

For instance, opening single from Turnover, is pretty good. It’s a standard pop punk track from the Virginia-based band. Fast, chanty vocals, distorted guitars and overall, fun beat; it’s a perky start for the record. There’s also a nice Beach Boys cover from Michigan band, Citizen. They did a pretty good job creating a slightly updated version of Barbara Ann.

A few other tracks worth the mention include Alison Weiss’ Fingers Crossed, Beast Makes Bomb’s 1,2,3,4 and final track from His Day Has Come, Where I Belong. You’ll find a ton of other great tracks on here. It’s a great album to sort through so take a listen and enjoy!

Hailing from Sacramento, California; the pair first met in 2002 but it wasn’t until 2009 when they got together to start playing music. After unsuccessfully looking for possible bassists and vocalists, they’ve decided to retain their status as a duo.

That decision might be the best thing they’ve made music-wise, The Downhill Dive contains solid rock tracks that will make The White Stripes step up the game a bit.

Sharing vocal duties, the duo beautifully harmonizes and blends with their instruments. Their sound can be generalized as “rock” but there are layers of other genres that crop up in their music.

Portions of trip hop, alternative pop and indie rock make up parts of compilation. Without You, I’m Useless, presents the duo’s indie rock side with Jess dominantly and confidently singing for much of the track. In parts, this brings in memories of Karen O but with more mystery and confidence.

I Will is louder, grittier and overall a great noise fest that should be cranked up when played. It’s a short 2 minute interlude featuring shouty vocals, epic dirty guitars and just tons of energy. Punky Bruiser, treads on the group’s punk/alternative side while Can’t Get It, explores their Radiohead influence. Zac offers up great vocals on this track too, something that shouldn’t be missed.

Closing single, Spit, starts off quiet, slow and dark before bursting out as an epic prog-rock affair filled with massive drums, sweeping guitars and awesome energy.

The Downhill Dive is a highly recommended record. Personally, it’s one of my favorites for the year. They were right in continuing as a duo because from the sound of things, they already have everything they need. It’ll be exciting to see their future projects though.

Obviously, he has a very special affinity for punk rock. The State of Mind on the Violent Side is, according to him, still under the mixing and mastering process. However, for those who love the gritty sound of DIY music, he's put it up for free download.

If you listen through this album, you’d be hard pressed to believe that PunkANation is simply a one-man project. Truth is that, it is. The man behind all that noise and punk rockin’ goodness is Ashwin Rao.

Obviously, he has a very special affinity for punk rock. The State of Mind on the Violent Side is, according to him, still under the mixing and mastering process. However, for those who love the gritty sound of DIY music, he’s put it up for free download.

The album is a 10-track compilation that should be considered one of the best punk rock finds for the year. It’s raw, dirty, traditional and absolutely awesome!

The album itself was released on Bandcamp last November 2012. It opens on a high note with Goldilocks and the 5C’s. True to form, it’s an unforgiving barrage of repetitive guitar riffs, slight shouting and rolling fast drums which is at the core of punk. It definitely starts the album right and gets you up on your feet while also offering a unique touch.

Clarke Quay and The Ballroom Mayhem showcase more of the loud madness. Although it’s not exactly his forte (my personal opinion) he does offer quieter tracks on here like the title track, The State of Mind on the Violent Side.

Nevertheless, the album is perfect for anyone who appreciates the genre. It’s expertly done like any other great punk rock album of the yesteryears. Plus, when you think about the fact that only one guy recorded the vocals, plays both guitars and writes the songs; well, it’s kind of mindblowing.

Grab the download if you like this one. It should be worth it.

Related Links:

Mars Water‘s foliow-up album to its July release is a curious thing.

The band started as a monthly song writing project of Ponny Kosmas in 2011, which later evolved into a full-pledged band under the name Mars Water—a combination of Kosmas’ interest and fear in both astronomy and the ocean.

Packed with a hefty set of 11 songs, Mars, Je T’aime is a concept album about a long distance love between a woman in France and a man in Mars. The songs in the album are letters between the lovers.

Spacey vocals and acoustic strings set the overall mood in Wait For Me. While Somewhere Nice follows with an upbeat, summer vibe. The sudden shift between these two songs paints a stark contrast between the distance of the two characters.

When I Saw You is a love child of the first two tracks as it perfectly combines the ambient sound of the first track and sunshine charm of the latter.

Tracks such as Penser à Toi, Philippe, and Attente features the effortlessly soothing vocals of Eva Kosmas. The arrangement of each tracks bursts with French appeal that will easily transport the listeners to the place.

Getting Married and The Wind concludes a happy ending for the distant lovers as they finally walk down the aisle.

In Mars, Je T’aime, Mars Water has succeeded in transforming a love story into exquisite pieces of music that are easily digestible.

Rarely do we feature loud bands here in Frostclick but if we do find a noteworthy artist, we don’t hesitate to share it with you guys. Will the Peace Remain? is one of these records, created by Aussie natives, Silver Grenade.

The album is a straightforward modern rock record with alternative tracks thrown in for good measure. Coming in with 10 bangin’ tracks, expect something loud and deafening. You get a reprieve on the volume in certain songs but those are few in between.

This is the first album for the band and so far they’re showcasing a pretty good set of sounds worthy of a listen.

Kicking the record is a dark, guitar-driven Intro. It runs a little over a minute showcasing an atmospheric rock track. It’s almost an extension of the first cut, The Escapist. Speaking of, the first track starts blasting heavy guitars, steady drums and gang vocals right from the onset. Although it’s not exactly perfect, it’s a coherent piece that maintains the energy built up by the band from the start.

End of Days is another loud track that combines a bit of that metal sound to it. Maybe it’s the melody and the way the guitars are played but I can imagine hearing and seeing the video on 80s/90s MTV.

Apart from the louder tracks, the guys do know how to step on the brakes if there’s a need. One of the best slower tracks include the acoustic number, Cold & Frozen, which strips down Scotty Doo’s vocals and exposes it for its raw sound.

The album has its shining moments and for a rock album, there’s plenty of beautiful harmonies embedded within the songs. Guitars and instruments are well done and the recording quality is pretty good as well. Overall, it’s a polished record that should please any modern/alternative rocker. Take a listen and grab it if you like what you hear.

Track list:
1. Intro
2. The Escapist
3. Walk Away
4. Falling Down
5. Turns to Dust
6. Cold and Frozen
7. End Of Days
8. Conflict Within
9. Know Your Place
10. Will The Peace Remain?

For a debut record, Stellar Young definitely places their best foot forward in Everything at Once. This indie alternative rock record might have traces of a bedroom recording but it’s more than enough to satisfy the senses.

Stellar Young (known before as The City Never Sleeps) are based out of Albany, NY. These boys aren’t exactly new in the business, in fact they’ve managed to share the stage with the likes of Paramore and Badfish to name a few.

After years of playing together, Everything at Once marks the boys’ first studio album. From the sound of it, there’s plenty of promise up ahead for this five piece crew.

Everything at Once is comprised of tracks that exude charm and charisma from the moment you listen to it. Opening with upbeat indie pop track, Playing With Guns; the song has a nice catchy rhythm that’s coupled with good guitar riffs and a catchy chant chorus.

Second and third track (Restless and The Universe is a Bully) are both upbeat numbers designed to keep the listener’s attention. They do the job quite well since both tracks are easily likable. In contrast, Speak Now (Good Man) and Dorothy are mid-tempo to slow melodic rock affairs showcasing the bands’ capacity to slow down while still engaging the listener.

Final track, Animals, seals the deal with awesome guitar work running throughout the track as well as some really good rhythm to accompany it.

Overall, the album provides a nice catchy set of tracks that will easily complement any music lover’s taste. Yes, some tracks do sound a bit too much alike but there’s still no denying this is a compilation worth enjoying. It’s the kind you put on and leave on without worrying of one horrible track to grace your ears.
If you love indie rock with touches of pop and good harmonies, Everything at Once will be quite a treat. Enjoy!

Track list:
1. Playing With Guns
2. Restless
3. The Universe is a Bully
4. The Misses
5. We Own Nothing
6. Alright
7. As You Go
8. Speak Now (Good Man)
9. Dorothy
10. Animals

It’s rare to meet an authentic and soulful alternative rock singer these days. However, if there ever was one that came closest to belonging in this little niche; you can bet Joe Marson is one of them.

Armed with a guitar, beautiful melodies and a voice that’s heartfelt and mesmerizing, Joe Marson and the Satisfied Mind has created a gem of a record.

Currently based in Brooklyn, this is Joe’s latest release. Consisting of previous recordings as well as originals, it comes in the heels of the 2011 record, Post Cards From Siren City. The album enchants and provides a fresh take of the alternative scene. Perfect for lovers of musicians like Ben Harper and Jeff Buckley.

Comprised of cuts oozing with charm, the album is available in this special snippet from the artist himself. Although if you want to help him out, you can purchase the entire record over at iTunes .

A few standout tracks to watch out for include My Luck Stays the Same; Joe’s strong and expressive vocals as well as his deft guitar skills transform the cut into a genuine blues, alternative rock number that’s worthy of a praise.

Someday Soon is another lovely single that’s worth noting of. Mixing blues and acoustic guitars along with very reflective lyrics. It builds up and soars nicely as the track rolls along. Love Left in Me as well as Leave on, Leave the Band are two other tracks to put on your playlist.

Joe Marson has played different types of music from hip hop to jazz and has traveled across the US with his music. With his 4 piece crew, together they create a sound that’s rich and revealing. Each one is filled with beautiful intensity and soul that reaches out.

Like much of Jeff Buckley’s pieces, it’s the kind of music you listen to several times and each time it sinks in; making the listener love it more and more. Take a listen. You won’t regret it.

01 “Love Left In Me”
02 “Someday Soon”
03 “My Luck Stays The Same”
04 “The Creek Where Joseph Used To Swim”
05 “Leave On, Leave the Band”
06 “Poor St. John”
07 “And The Lightning, He Will Ride”
08 “Goddamit Julia”

The Laureates began cultivating their sound as far back as 2005. Vocalist Chad Preston initially compiled a set of tracks for his lo-fi album but knew that it’s more fun to have other people join him.

All Eyes Open by The Laureates

By the time they released their self-titled EP, the now quartet have found a good sound. So far, they’ve released several singles and mini compilations while continuing to dazzle in their indie rock garage sound.

Spells is the band’s second album and was released back in 2011. It deviates a bit from the 3-minute pop formula of their previous tracks and entertains a more blues, vintage style garage rock sound.

The album combs through the band’s 80s and 60s style rock influences and gathers catchy tracks that seem destined for some low key bar room.

Most of the cuts carry that fun pop style that’s easy to jive along to. Check out the single, Life of Leisure and you’ll capture that 60s feel-good pop rock that makes the track easily enjoyable. Guitar work is quite consistent while the stompy beat and harmonizing vocals sound very inviting.

Worry, Worry, Worry on the other hand, flow with a nice Byrds vibe while Moon Bitch, explores the group’s psychedelic side. Starting out as a mellow yet moody piece with chorus singing before transforming into a piece with droning guitars.

The Laureates have this characteristic sound that’s quite reserved but listeners can tell there’s something brewing that’s waiting to get out. It’s this capacity to create intense, easily likable music that makes this band stand out.

For more of the band, you can visit their homepage. For the meantime, grab the download, it will serve as great company for those moody nights.

Glass Kite‘s self-titled debut album rebels in it’s own alternative rock genre as it surprises the eager listeners with electronic, cinematic, and experimental musings.

Based in Vancouver, B.C., Glass Kites is a five-piece progressive rock band composed of Leon Feldman (vox/guitar/electronics), Nate Drobner (bass/keyboards), Curt Henderson (guitar), Daryn Cassie (keyboards/electronics), and Duncan Truter (drums).

The beat drops in Terra, a hefty progressive dream piece with layers over layers of guitars and keys. The band’s unique brand of atmospheric music is encapsulated in this opening piece.

The Body follows up with an explosion of experimental sounds slowly building into a crescendo of rapid beats and playful keyboard arrangement. Leon Feldman’s voice is pleasurable to listen to, it is amazing how it blends well with the melody and does not overpower the whole track.

In Soothsayer, the band offers another approach in post rock as ambient vocals is mixed with playful strings and electronic tunes. The track has a catchy beat that wraps the piece with a certain kind of positive, dance-inducing energy.

Slowly (Home) ends the collection with a slow, sexy tune. Once again, Feldman’s vocals gives justice to the whole ambient arrangement. Press play, close your eyes, and let this soothing track conclude this pleasurable listening experience.

With this debut album, Glass Kites has marked their spot on the game and will surely attract steady followers. Their music reminds you that with creativity and out-of-the-box thinking, a genre can continually grow.

Heavily influenced by the classics, expect to get some lo-fi psychedelic pop rock from this little compilation. Volume One comes complete with upbeat dirty strumming, fun singing and handclaps.

The threepiece is made up of Mike Kmiec on guitar/vocals/bass; Matt Eisle on vocals; and Tim Fassnacht on drums.

The Kinks, The Walkmen, Bob Dylan and John Lennon count as those among their diverse influences.

Proudly carrying that 60s and 70-style rock badge coupled with some gorgeous psychedelic touch, the band can easily convince listeners to enjoy their dream world.

Volume One carries tracks with a lo-fi garage style rock and a loose Midwestern feel. You’ll see this in title track, Cosmos and Desert Song best. With the chorus singing and the acoustic blues guitars, it’s easy to imagine yourself in some Western bar tapping your feet or head bobbing to the song while downing that classic mug of beer.

Fight for Your love, on the other hand, is a real throwback to the early days of rock. You can bury this in a vinyl set of classic rock and you wouldn’t know the difference. The track comes with handclaps, slightly warbled vocals, melody and boxy guitars.

It seems Chicago has been brewing some of the best lo-fi garage rock bands as of late. (This is the third one I’ve come across in a month). The Cosmos Kids may have no interest in conforming to the mainstream but their sound is still beautiful and easily likable, especially for classic rockers out there. Grab the download.
