George Watsky is a winner of the Youth Speaks Poetry Grand Slam and the Brave New Voices National Slam championships. He has been a featured performer on Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry on HBO and one of three poets who performed live on FOX during the NAACP Image Awards, among (many, many) others. So why did it take me so long to find out about a guy who have already shared billing with icons such as Stevie Wonder, Beyonce, and Talib Kweli? Wish I knew, but I know that there is no reason why you should wait any longer to get to know him too.

Watsky is an emcee, writer, poet, performer and, as stated by popeater.com, a rapper spitting his rhymes faster than a Speed Racer drives. Born and raised in San Francisco (currently living in Los Angeles), he graduated from Boston’s Emerson College and have already performed at conferences and universities in over forty U.S. states and Australia.

His latest solo debut, ‘A New Kind of Sexy’, is a compilation of sixteen great tracks, all with the same flavor that first brought Watsky into the public view and onto my playlist. This is why I am still a bit nostalgic about the very first songs that caught my eye; I Got This Love, with a golden-voice of yet another youtube sensation – Passion, Color Lines featuring Catch Wreck – a local Boston favorite, and Everything Turns Gold performed together with an acclaimed singer-songwriter Mieka Pauley and a hip hop legend Gift of Gab. If you want to check out these songs, also available as a free/pay-what-you-want download, head over to Bandcamp.

A New Kind of Sexy Mixtape by Watsky

And sure, Watsky might have something of a Michael Cera look but ever since the release of his music video, Pale Kid Raps Fast, he has been compared to Eminem and Busta Rhymes almost as often as Tina Fey’s performance on SNL to Sarah Palin.
The video have already became an instant internet sensation being featured on Reddit’s home page and getting nearly sixteen million views to date.

[shot by Jess Dunlap; audio engineered by Pete Olivo; titles by Jackson Adams; backing track- 'Break Ya Neck' - Busta Rhymes]

Most importantly, however, Watsky is a spoken-word artist with an aim to cross-pollinate the stage, screen and stereo. So it is to no surprise that his work extends way beyond recorded music and his poetic creations frequently visit the realm of a theater.

Want even more? Watsky speaks green. As a winner of the first Brave New Voices Sundance Global Warming poetry competition, he has since been invited twice by Robert Redford to perform in Sundance, Utah. He served as a host of the final concert of Powershaft 2007 in Washington, DC, and performed at Rock the Debate in Mississippi right before the 2008 Presidential debate. His involvement in the sustainability movement have also brought him to Sydney, Australia for the opening of Green Cities 2008 and to Greenbuild Chicago taking the stage right before President Bill Clinton and in 2011 he performed live as a guest on the Ellen Degeneres Show.

And if you do like what you hear remember, George Watsky travels.
He travels to wide and far places to leave his words behind just as he did at some of his highlight live performances at the San Francisco Opera House, Shrine Auditorium, Kennedy Center Concert Hall, and the famous New York’s Apollo Theater. So if you want to catch his next big gig be sure to check the official website.

The Freak Fandango Orchestra is an energetic and quirky bunch of musicians who like to play fun and unusual music.

Their first record Love, Death and a Drunken Monkey was entertaining and came doused with beautiful instrument work and amusing lyrics. For their latest release, Tales of a Dead Fish, they retain their crazy upbeat sound, still incorporating humor, superb instrument work and a very catchy beat to every single one of their cuts.

Mixing gypsy, folk, punk rock and polka, The Freak Fandango Orchestra will definitely capture your attention whether you like it or not.

The record opens with Requiem for a Fish, a jaunty track that has saxophones blaring, occasional chanting and some serious catchy tune. It starts off things nicely with its uptempo sound, making you want to stand up, grab a partner and start dancing for no reason. Almost all of the songs have this same infectious beat. Third track, Balkan Beats, seems a great fit for The Mask to dance along to and do all his stunts. There’s a whole layer of instrument work that beautifully merges with the lyrics.

Royalty Free Music – Stock Music Library | Jamendo PRO

Meanwhile, Hitman’s Love Song (both the last track and the one featuring Paola) combines distinctive vocals with a nice semi-laid-back beat. It’s probably the “slowest” song on the record yet it’s something you can imagine Charlie Chaplin still prancing around to.

Tales of a Dead Fish is a great album. It’s hard not to fall for the music, whether you’re into this kind of sound or not, since it manages to give you that feel-good feeling. Perfect for fans of Gogol Bordello. It’s a genuinely fun album to check out.

During this day and age, I find it more and more difficult to find punk bands which sport the punk genre in a legitimate sense. However, recently, my ears have been rewarded with some of the scarce spoils in which rarely become available to a dedicated browser like myself. The album ‘Pick it up’ by ‘The Sovereigns’, resurrects the late 1980’s/early 1990’s version of ska-punk that many believe to have died long ago. Hysterical drum beats (with a tempo range between relatively fast to extremely rapid), catchy brass sections, walking bass lines and power chords strummed from a fanatically distorted guitar help to ensure that all of the desired boxes are ticked. These aspects then conglomerate to form a sound similar to that of Anti-flag, NOFX and Reel Big Fish. Additionally, the bands vocalist portals politically motivated and humerous lyrics through a rough and husky voice - while he also manages to stay in key. This deems the Sovereign’s music worthy of a wider audience and saves them from being restricted to only those of the traditional punk scene.

I find it more and more difficult to come accross punk bands which sport the punk genre in a legitimate sense. Additionally, the bands vocalist portals politically motivated and humorous lyrics through a rough and husky voice – while he also manages to stay in key. This deems the Sovereign’s music worthy of a wider audience and saves them from being restricted to only those of the traditional punk scene.

 Royalty-free music for professional licensing

The opening song ‘Pick it up (and run)’ offers a short and simplistic introduction to the album, while a lesser focus on vocals helps to embellish the technical abilities of the bands remaining instrumentalists. When looking for a new band to listen to, I normally base my judgment on the first song of an album. I believe that this should be used as a device in both setting an overall mood and creating a basis for assessing the albums worth. This song certainly exhibits both of these aspects, while it also captures the audience’s attention with minimalistic and catchy melodies. Other songs in which deserve a special mention include: ‘Sex and Modern Drugs’ and ‘Pirate Mutiny’. In my view, these are the catchiest and most polished songs on the album. ‘Sex and Modern Drugs’ best conveys the musical characteristics expressed earlier, while ‘Pirate Mutiny’ provides a ‘slightly cleaner’ and contrasting midway break. This is accomplished through slow and mellow verses and a respectable ‘sax break- down’.

This album is a must-have for all punk fans and those who dabble in this genre from time to time.

Quirky songwriter and musician, Logan Whitehurst, has been known to many people as the dude that sings about robot cats and how it never rains on a guy named Alex. He’s performed in several bands including being a founding  member of indie rock band, The Velvet Teen.

Although Whitehurst’s career was cut short because of his illness, he released some catchy yet quirky tracks in his solo project; dubbing himself as Logan Whitehurst and the Jr. Science Club.

An Introduction To is a set of tracks from Whitehurst’s repertoire, including some of the more recent ones he recorded before he passed away. This cheeky artist has been releasing most of his songs online since 2007 and he has gained quite a substantial fanbase. Although he is best known from his indie electronic group, the Velvet Teen, that didn’t stop him from exploring his less serious side.

Most of the songs he recorded in his 4-track starting 1997, are available for download and for purchase on Mp3.com. His songs feature comical lyrics and fun instrument work. As an accomplished instrumentalist, Whitehurst not only played the drums on his songs but also a host of other instruments like the accordion, guitar and piano. The comedic musician has been praised by a lot of critics, enough to get a comparison to comedic singing duo, Flight of the Conchords.

His last album was a posthumous compilation composed of short tracks (ranging from 30 to 90 seconds) which was done in over 2 months. It was released on December 26, 2006 after his death from recurring brain cancer.

White Owl is a Russian folk core group that creates some funky folk rock music. Equipped with different tastes in music, ranging from alternative, indie, hardcore, disco and folk, the band’s music is a result of this diverse musical fusion.

Pepper was released a couple of years back and comes with quirky, upbeat and fun tracks that’s sure to get you moving. Currently, the group is recording their new album.

 Free music for professional licensing

The band’s new compilation features a mix of Finnish, Scottish and Irish music. Each track is lively and features a lot of spunk and interest. For instance, tracks like “Fifteen Man on a Dead Man’s Chest” is a modern day pirate song that’s reworked into something more up-to-date. La Rotta is a great instrumental that features a beautiful Celtic sound.  Lord of the Dance, on the other hand, is a fun and very upbeat, Irish tune that is filled with jolly violin work and very interesting, Gogol Bordello-esque vocal work.

The diversity in instrument work provides an interesting take on the album allowing no boring moments in between. Each layer of the compilation seems to be decked with interesting bits and pieces that contribute to its overall beauty.

This quirky concept group is made up of Hagnir on vocal duties, Natalya on drums, Artem on bass, Anatoly on the fiddle and Vladimir on electric guitars.

We see it as a sort of a tribute to WM Recordings – the net label that proved that free music is good music and should be shared.

WM Recordings do not simply feature a certain genre in their every album – they share a mixed variety of different genres which are sure to be liked by just about anyone.

They released WM x 100 / 100 x WM on November 7, 2009 – exactly 5 years after they have established the net label. They have shared almost 1000 tracks from artist all over the world, with a great variety of genres and remixes, and the thought of giving away free and legal music to all people around the world.

The album has various sounds from Afrobeat to Progressive Rock, to Pop and Free Jazz. Moreover, the 100th album is not dedicated to one genre or to one geographical location – all artists come from all over the world, adding a special touch to their 100th compilation.

One nice thing about this album is that you do not know what is in store for you. Once you put your music player in shuffle and pop in this album, you do not know what kind of experience would the next song give you. Take Century of Aeroplanes’ You Like Woody Allen? Studio Haen Remix; at the sound of it, you might say it is some kind of club music inspired by Woody Allen. On the other hand, you would find yourself drifting off into some kind of weird hypnotizing poem which is quite amusing.

Support free music by supporting WM Recordings, and you’d have good, free, and legal music in return for it.

Quick. Grab everything you know about what a music album should be. Now, grab everything you know about what music should be. Got it? okay. Put it in a box and hide it under the bed or tucked in a closet where it’ll be safe from Manu Chao’s latest musical project “Viva La Califata.”

Manu Chao is no stranger to pushing the limits of music and it’s conventions. In fact it would be rare to find any of his music settled in a clearly defined genre.

Manu Chao is usually found expanding musical concepts; from its inception passing through the way it’s recorded, until it reaches a finished state that isn’t always a stable one.

However, with all this said, “Viva La Califata” will stand on its own as one of his most interesting and expressing works of music. Recorded in conjunction with Buenos Aires’ notorious radio station, Radio La Colifata which is notorious by being staffed by current and ex-patients of a psychiatric hospital in the area.

That should give you a sense of what you’re getting into with this album. A sense that may or may not be completely wrong. If your brain told you it expected some psychedelic gabbercore like hrvatski or kid606 (both great artists if you like to experiment and have your mind blown at the same time, in the good and bad way), it is my pleasure to tell you that you’re completely neither wrong nor right.

There is certainly no techno or electronica in this piece as we know it, but you can certainly get the feeling of unbound freedom of expression in this piece as you would in some of the most notorious and genre defining gabbercore songs. By this point, you’re probably wondering if the author of this post is himself a current or ex-patient of the psychiatric hospital this piece of music came from. I assure you I am nowhere near Buenos Aires.

What you will find in this album is 30 of the most interesting minutes of free flowing musical creativity. A very lyrically heavy piece that relies on spoken language to deliver its sharp message. This is certain to alienate any non-spanish speaking listeners but, granted you speak the language, will take you on a trip through the minds of these patients and ex-patients.

Imagine having a brain upside down and emptied of its contents, contents which are then mixed around, some duplicated, others cut, and most stacked on top of each other, to then all be presented in rapid succession stumbling on the way. This is the only way in which I can fathom describing the music contained in this album. The messages in this pool of thoughts range from insightful critics of the psychiatric system, to observations of the world passing throughout the state of the world and their feelings about love.

This is all I can say about the music itself, but I hope that I managed to transmit at least a small piece of the powerfulness of the emotions this album evokes.

If you enjoyed this album like I did, please head over to the donation section and make a donation to keep this station going.
