Age is no excuse not to make a great record, just ask Howl. This little electro, ambient project is helmed by 18 year old Josh Banham aka Howl. This isn’t his first piece either as he’s been releasing several mini compilations for awhile.

Recorded between October 2011 and July 2012, Happy Valley is a collection of tracks “about dreams and songs about love and songs about dying,” according to the artist.

This is actually his first non-digital release. Each piece of the physical CD is handprinted, although listeners can also grab the digital record at a name-your-price option.

Trippy and melodramatic, are two words you might find yourself describing this record. Filled with 10 cuts that range from 1-4 minutes, the compilation provides a beautiful escape. Named after a race track in Hong Kong, Happy Valley is an important place for Howl since according to him, this was the place where most of the cuts here were “dreamt up.”

Although the album begins with HV, which serves as more of a prolonged intro rather than a track by itself, the cut runs close to 2 minutes and serves as a doorway into the complex and cool world inside.

Forests, begin the compilation proper with a single haunted by trip hop beats and melancholic vocals. It’s a slow and slightly cerebral cut. Meanwhile, Falling, is a hardcore mix of sounds. Elements of electronica, dance and ambient atmosphere are present in this somewhat dark and gritty track.

All of the songs on here were written and performed by Howl with the exception of The Himalayas, which sounds like a celebratory track coupled with 80s British synth pop vocals.

To sum up, this is an unexpectedly likable record. Despite being very low-key in certain instances, you’ll find that the songs have that special touch that makes you want to listen to what the singer has to say or in most cases, want to communicate through ticks, beats and rhythms. This is a worthy download if you ask me. Check it out for yourself.

Although the label that released this gem is no longer active, Crunch Pod did leave quite a few awesome compilations to check out.

Pastel Agressive from talented electronic maven, Bitch Brigade is one of these albums left behind. Consisting of experimental synth pop with added girly rock and pop vocals, the album is the perfect soundtrack to a laid back dance club night out.

Bitch Brigade started back in 2006 and comes from the Land Down Under. They are made up of Agr1ppa (Agrippa Cryoflesh,) Zero_ (keyboards) and Ping! (drums).

Little is known about the band themselves so let’s just delve into what makes this album quite special: the music.

Pastel Aggressive is actually a remix album so expect different versions of the two primary tracks on here. Kickstarting the dance compilation is Licky the Carnivorous Pony remixed by Polluted Axis and the Magical Glue Factory (yes, you can expect more quirky titles from the album). The track is a synth/strobe-light feel, sexy track. Bitch Brigade knows how to keep their audience entranced, making you want to listen from start to finish.

The other track on here is Bubblegum Cyber, it’s a single that sees the artist proclaiming how she has a fetish for “pink and cute, and PVC…” It’s a great cut and each remix adds a different feel to it.

Overall, even if you only occasionally like dance music, it’s hard not to find this album intriguing. Personally, I ended up liking it after one listen. Bitch Brigade brings in a new layer to the sound they create, ensuring that they’re not just repeating formulas so familiar in today’s dance scenes. Go check it out. It’s a name-your-price-download.

Aiming to capture those fleeting moments and translate them into a gorgeous mix of beats, synths and rhythm; Journal manages to create a rich landscape of sound that listeners can easily get lost in.

The man behind Shipwrek is Jason Siegler. His fascination with capturing his day to day existence into sound initially started as a simple project but quickly evolved into a complex set of recordings that throb and pulse with energy as well as life.

Journal is one of those albums you’d want to put on if you need a break from repetitive pop music or loud songs. Made up of laid-back, contemplative beats; it’s easy to mind map your way through things with this compilation on.

As mentioned, the songs on the album serve as a day to day recording of the artists’ life translated into beats, synths, samples and other quirky/soothing sounds. Starting off this album is Speakeasy, a concoction of trip hop beats and a slight gamer almost “curious” vibe throughout the track. One thing you’ll notice as the cuts take one turn after another, is that each one has its own little atmosphere and personality.

In Chasing Circles, you have that reflective mood playing off as the piano swirls and electronic beats fly around before eventually forming into a cohesive unit. Other cuts to check out include For the Days You Don’t Feel It and Barefeeted.

Overall, the entire record flows with emotion. Each instrument and sound used has a purpose; making it a charming album that could easily become the soundtrack to your day to day life as well. Take a listen and enjoy.

By now, plenty of people have caught the Grimes bug. This Canadian music maker didn’t expect her first album to become so successful but it was and it was even critically praised by several music reviewers for its eccentricity and originality.

Geidi Primes was released last 2010 and contains 11 tracks that range from folkish electro dub to just an overall weird soundscape. Majority of the tracks on the album including the title itself are based on Frank Herbert’s best selling science fiction novel, Dune.

Expect to find references at every turn as you listen to the record. It takes you on a mystical journey that transcends and pulls you out of Earth and into a beautiful world few would ever experience.

Listening to Geidi Primes takes a bit of an acquired taste. The album is a weird mix of electronic indie pop with big mashes of bits and bobs. Listening to the record is like downing a cocktail of sounds thrown together to create an unusual drink that manages to intoxicate and generate illusions.

Starting with Caladan, the album already sets the mood early on. The single treats with dreamy pop sounds that hypnotizes at every turn. It’s almost a made for Sofia-Coppola-movie-soundtrack. It’s one of those things you have to keep listening to several times to appreciate it fully. A few other recommended tracks include Avi, Gambang and the masterful, Beast Infection.

The album is the kind that grows on you. After several listens, you’ll be lost in the beautiful world of Geidi Primes. Grab the copy, you won’t regret it.

All India Radio is a four piece crew from the land down under. Even if you’ve never heard of them, chances are you might have encountered their songs from TV shows like CSI: Miami, One Tree Hill or Australia’s premiere series, Bondi Rescue.

They’ve released 8 albums since 2000 and continue to impress as well as win over more listeners thanks to their ambient sound. Their mix of hypnotic downbeat electronica serves as a lush soundscape that listeners can easily get lost in.

Free Me (Remixes & Outtakes) contains a collection of released/remixed and previously unreleased songs that’s offered by the boys for free.

The End or Near, kickstarts the album and features a Sade-like feel. Showcasing beautiful female vocals, moody guitars and a slightly dark atmosphere; the song graciously welcomes listeners to the band’s unique sound. It’s definitely an easy favorite and provides a high standard on the tracks you can expect to hear from the record.

Free Me (Remixes & Outtakes) by All India Radio

Other tracks that you shouldn’t skip on include, Morning Drops, which is a gorgeous acoustic song featuring the same female vocals from the first cut. It’s simple and clean while combining violins at the background. This is also one out of three previously unreleased tracks by the group. The other two, Waukaringa and Tijuana Dream, are two of the longest tracks in the record. They run for 7 and 6 minutes, respectively.

Overall, you get an album that’s definitely a must-listen for any ambient lover out there. It’s even a surprise that they’re releasing this for free since most of the tracks are pretty good and definitely done in great quality. Go ahead and take a listen. You’ll definitely enjoy this as well.

Bringing in a fusion of experimental trip hop and dance pop sounds, Nonchalant by Ben K. Adams is a nice little getaway compilation for those looking to enjoy a little time out on the dancefloor.

This is the latest release from the artist and it combines his skillful guitar playing with his expert mixing skills.

Nonchalant is a short EP but it’s enough to entice the listeners and keep them hooked with the few tracks it has in tow.

Opening with the semi acoustic number, It’s Been Done Before; the song reminds me of Justin Timberlake and marked with a catchy pop beat. It’s a nice number that coaxes dance moves out of you. Essentially, a great upbeat electro track that serves as a perky opener for the EP.

It’s followed by, I Hope Dana Approves, which slows down the tempo of the EP a tad bit. If the first one was a straight up, jump-into-the-dancefloor-track; this second one is more the smoothly- slide-onto-the-dancefloor beat. They’re both equally enjoyable though. Meanwhile, You’ll Die Regretting Everything, has an Eastern feel to it. It combines exotic sounding samples as well as a somewhat spiritual atmosphere.

Final track Carcinogenic Closure, runs for only 2 minutes. In the track, the artist creates a jazzy coffee club beat with pianos and sparkling sounds.

According to the artist, each sound represents something he hasn’t done before. It’s a sweet and fresh compilation that deserves a listen, for sure. Check out the download and see if you like it.

With a name like Unhappy Free Orc, you can expect something eclectic and different from this compilation. The band is the brainchild of Marlon Moilanen & Miro Palokallio, they are joined by a group of talented musicians that help create their distinct sound.

Broken People EP is a 7-track compilation consisting of songs that didn’t make it the group’s previous releases.

According to the band, they might be “leftovers” but they consider them as among some of their best work.

Jumping between jazz, electronica, pop and even progressive, on occasion; Broken People EP is an album that can easily satisfy your cravings for a variety of genres. This Finnish duo are quite eclectic, choosing to experiment instead of steadily sticking to one kind of sound.

Opening with a trippy electro dance cut, Heartline. The band had this to say about the track: Heartline was inspired by what an Indian internet stalker said about our friend Salla. The song wasn’t originally intended to be released, but once finished, it was so good it would’ve been a pity not to release it.

The other cuts have their own special origin stories, most of which were singles that were dropped last minute from being included in certain compilations. Singles like, The Shopping Mall, contain a blues, jazz atmosphere, coupled with whispery vocals while All Rights Reserved, is a dark, sweet cut reminiscent of 80s Depeche Mode.

The album is short but it does have noteworthy cuts to listen to. Broken People EP is currently available for free download at BandCamp. Check it out.

Artist and composer Alexander Chereshnev, has unveiled his latest project titled Unremembered Startdust. The EP comes equipped with 4 tracks that are both hauntingly dreamy and melancholic.

The artist has been around the music scene since 2004, producing various types of music and releasing a few EPs. Among his first compilations was a short record titled Going Home. This was released under his then moniker, Siberian Son.

After this first foray, he followed it up by releasing various vinyls, singles as well as contributing to different compilations including this latest record.

His previous works were supported and welcomed by quite a few world-famous DJs the likes of Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Warren, Paul Oakenfold, John 00 Fleming and Anthony Pappa to name a few. Moreover, his succeeding albums also gained plenty of notice. Although he’s moved on to a more ambient, downtempo vibe; the artist still brings in that special touch.

Unremembered Stardust is his latest album. As each of the track plays, the artist brings you to a world where deep and dreamy sounds abound. Starting with Vanishing Memories, you get this foreboding feeling ringing in. It’s haunting but also filled with a nice melodic touch. Meanwhile, Parfois is a gorgeous track that features spoken word in French along with some atmospheric sound while Some Other Color, is one of the more upbeat tracks on the record. Finally, the EP is finished off by Non Mi Ricordo which features SackJo22. The song has that Elvish feel like something you can imagine fairies, nymphs and elves would sing to themselves in the forest.

Overall, you get a short but concise compilation that stirs the senses. Each cut somewhat represents the artists’ capacity to mix different styles and genres; making the record a delight to listen to. Go ahead and make sure to grab the download.

Progressive techno and dance don’t get enough lovin’ in the mainstream market but it doesn’t mean it’s not worth taking a listen to.

Makkadessia is a duo made up of Yauhen Bardouski and Maxim Kuharenko; two young producers from Belarus. Moonou is the duo’s latest release and hauls in a flurry of the house, techno, progressive and dub sounds with them.

Released under Wavelike.net, the label specializes in offering electronic music that are licensed and shared for free under a Creative Commons License.

Despite having plenty of sites to check out their sound, there’s hardly any solid information about the duo. One thing’s for certain though, their sound is a gorgeous mix of muted snares and house/trance rhythms fit for a psychedelic time.

Starting the compilation is Original, the track showcases hypnotic beats lined with occasional vocal samples. Despite being 8 minutes long, listeners are treated to a wall of sound that pulses and throbs incessantly. Giving off the same vibe throughout the EP, each track on the album shows off a resident feel and aura. Most of these are easy to dance to and would make the ideal soundtrack for clubs as well as rave parties everywhere.

Overall, you’re in for some type of sonic experience when you listen to this record. The album is available as a free download right now, so take a listen and enjoy.

Colours of Melancholia is a one-man project of Berlin based musician, Sebastian. It’s an album that leaves you great window seats to the artist’s sonic exploration.

Initially influenced by heavy metal, rock and punk; Sebastian says he’s always been fascinated in sampling as well as experimental types of production. This interest then led to this self-titled debut record.

The compilation is a lush landscape of sound; showcasing great use of beats, samples and synths to create a pleasing album worth noting.

Exploring a dark, shady world; Colours of Melancholia is a beautiful piece that uses samples and abstract hip hop rhythms to create one exploratory track after another.

From the start, listeners are greeted by Feelings. Containing deep bass, electric guitar plucking and voice loops; each of these serve as a subtle puzzle piece that expands into one coherent yet moody sonic picture. Other songs experiment with more organic sometimes ethnic beats. You’ll hear this in tracks like Sitar and Griechisch musik.

On the other hand, singles like Victim of Progress, is a track that’s infused with trip hop elements while Punk Ist Anders, adds a playful, jaunty tempo to the record.

Despite the different genres tackled in the record, there’s a pervading melancholia embedded in most of it. If you look closely, there’s a marked complexity that draws listeners in; making them feel as if they’ll miss on something if they blink.

Colours of Melancholia is nowhere near a sappy album. You’ll be surprised to find a couple of “happy” songs on here. Nevertheless, the artist has captured melancholia expertly in majority of the cuts. Overall, it’s a nice album if you want to try something new. Go ahead and grab it. It’s at a name-your-price download on BandCamp.
