Here is yet another outstanding album from Nick Roberts and Josh Morris better known as And the Giraffe. With a Sold Out CD Package, the duo’s latest offering Something for Someone features six tracks that puts dream folk music on a pedestal.

Hailing from Gainesville, Florida, the band started when the best friends/musical duo met during an orientation meeting for the University in Gainesville and decided to jam together. After few local shows, Josh moved to Nashville and collaborated with Nick via the Internet. When Josh returned during the summer of 2011, the two were already determined to record their first EP. Currently, they are planning a tour within the year.

Underground Love welcomes the ears with oozes of ambient, hypnotic charm. Close your eyes as this track’s laid back vibe paint vivid soundscapes.

Slowly building up like waves in the ocean, 1055 follows up with a long intro of hazy electric guitar strums. A stripped-down earthly delivery adds an indie flair to this sonic goldmine.

In Welshrats, the duo teases our ears with saccharine acoustic strings. Ghostly vocals casts a nostalgic feel to the whole track.

Ambient and playful as it comes, Magic 8 is the ideal backdrop for a cold night. Cuddle up with a loved one and devour in this pristine song.

Still seals the album with a light kiss of subtle drum beats and hazy tunes. This slow and soothing serenade will surely transport you to blissful dreams.

One thing that makes Something for Someone great is that it takes much artistic freedom from its instrumentation. And the Giraffe has created an album that features tracks with the same ambient stroke, the kind of music that offers listeners a sweet escape, even for a little while.

The Blackfires: Live at The Cutting Room

It’s been awhile since we featured a balls-out hard rock band here on the blog, so here’s one record you can sink your teeth into.

The Blackfires – Live at The Cutting Room captures the essence of the band’s sound. From wild riffs, impressive wailing vocals and crashing cymbals, the tracks from this mini session will resonate deep and hard for many fans of 70s rock and roll.

This New York outfit are fairly new in the scene but they’re already cooking up quite a storm in various underground rock/metal circuits. And once you hear them, it’s pretty easy to understand why people are buzzing.

It’s rare to see a rock band so expertly showcase their various influences without losing their own voice or sound in the process. However, The Black Fires make this feat look quite easy. Their music, for the most part, is a throwback to the era of Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple etc., but yet they manage to retain their modern voice amidst the concoction.

There’s only 5 tracks on here but it’s enough to give you a good picture of what you’re in for, in case you get to see the band live.

Energetic opener, Rocker Child, plays with traditional rock riffs and would certainly kickstart a good concert. Thanks to his powerful voice, frontman Cheggi, easily sways listeners while still keeping up with the instruments.

Livewire Babies is perhaps one of the most solid tracks on the record. Although almost all the cuts are likable, this one has great potential as a single. The guitar work is beautiful on this one so make sure to check it out.

The Blackfires is certainly a band to watch out for. Essentially, there are bands who cover 70s rock faithfully and then there’s this band. They take it a step further by using their love for the decade while ensuring their personality still stands out. As a result, they create a great balance between old school and modern that’s hard to pull off.

Phil Fox: Midstreams

Eighteen year-old producer, Phil Fox, has compiled some of his best works and put together this cool electronic ambient compilation just for you. Filled with 8 tracks that flourish in hip hop electronic beats as well as quiet sounds, the album features great flowing cuts that imbibe a smooth and relaxing atmosphere.

Although there’s not much about him out there; on his short profile bio on SoundCloud he states that his “setup consists of Reason, my Axiom 49 controller, 2 M-Audio BX5 sound monitors, and hopefully soon, Ableton Live.” He adds that he likes creating “instrumentals, from Underground Hip-Hop, Trap, Electronic, mellow cloud-type music, and a bunch of songs I make as a joke.”

Even though he might make some of these as a joke, there’s no doubt it involves some great skill on his part. Starting off with Seabears, the track is filled with a relaxing ambient mix completed by weird twinkling sounds. Both of these coalesce to form the 1 minute opener.

Dat T-Hal Flow, follows next and it integrates a bit more hip hop into the electronic ensemble. FNKADLC continues the hip hop and retro sound while Aquarium and Mondegreen blend in a bit of trip-hop and slow vibes into the compilation. The rest of the tracks add their own flavor to the record, expanding it and adding a rich diversity. Midstreams end with Haunted House, a rather quiet single filled with piano work and deep, ominous vibe.

Overall, the album is pretty good. Each track is different and peels back the curtains on what this young producer/DJ can do. Take a listen, you might like this one.

Janek Gwizdala: Theatre By The Sea

Travel back to the waves and sand in Janek Gwizdala’s new release entitled Theatre By The Sea.

A mainstay in the international music scene both as a bassist and sideman for 15 years, Janek Gwizdala’s long list of credits include playing with Randy Brecker, Mike Stern, Pat Metheny , Hiram Bullock, and many more.

In Theatre By The Sea, the english bassist treats us with nine tracks of funky jazz laced with hints of bossa nova. The collection opens with Erdanase, a sonic infusion of saxophones and sultry back vocals. Thirty seconds within the song and it will definitely calm your senses.

España follows with a combination of hand clapping beats and a mellow approach. Spend that perfect romantic dinner as trombone and lush guitar strings fill the air.

Featuring a more upbeat tempo and saxophone solos, Randroid will uplift your soul to just the right level of energy. Press play and let this sonic wonder channel some positive vibes.

Title track Theatre By The Sea does not also disappoint with its lush arrangement of drums, guitars, keyboard, and tenor/soprano saxophones. The beats are sharp yet they transition smoothly through the ears.

In Theatre By The Sea, Janek Gwizdala has created a special mood album that touches and feels the deepest of our senses. These are the kind of melodies that’s a repeat.

Shortstraw: Good Morning, Sunshine

Just like freshly-brewed coffee and fluffy pancakes, start your day right with a healthy serving of Shortstraw‘s new album entitled Good Morning, Sunshine.

Awarded as the Best Indie Band at the 2012 MK Music Awards, Shorstraw is a five-piece Johannesburg-based band composed of Alistair (lead vocals/guitar), Oliver (drums, backing vocals), Russell (bass guitar), Tom (lead guitar), and Gad (keys, backing vocals).

Originally a two-piece drums/guitar band, the boys formally took the name Shortstraw and started performing gigs in 2008. They have been making waves in the indie scene as an opening act for The Kooks for the 5Gum experience and is currently touring South Africa.

Packed with a collection of 12 polished tracks, Good Morning, Sunshine travails the trash folk indie territories with a splash of trip-happy attitude.

Kicking things off is Couch Potato, a lively folk ensemble that mixes quirky guitar play-ups with some energetic drum lashes. One thing’s that makes this track stand out is its hip and well-written lines. Surely, this sonic gem will find its way to anyone’s playlist

Gimme My Fix (It’s Only Recreational) follows the same sonic mold as the previous track, though it’s a bit edgier in its drum notes. Alistair’s enthralling vocals gives more power to the track.

Title track Good Morning, Sunshine and Bikini Weather make the ideal summer anthem as both shed hints of surf pop rock in every melody. While The Wedding Blues treats us some thick riffs and heavy guitar arrangement. Press play and let Alistair and Shane Durrant’s vocal slithers in every beat.

The collection closes in a soft cooing folk blend with 127 hours. The simple, saccharine folk strings build slowly to a celebration of drum beats, horns, and keys.

In Good Morning, Sunshine, the band has planted their spot in the indie landscape. With fun, infectious tunes and strong lyricism, Shortstraw is certainly something to look out for.

Howl: Happy Valley

Age is no excuse not to make a great record, just ask Howl. This little electro, ambient project is helmed by 18 year old Josh Banham aka Howl. This isn’t his first piece either as he’s been releasing several mini compilations for awhile.

Recorded between October 2011 and July 2012, Happy Valley is a collection of tracks “about dreams and songs about love and songs about dying,” according to the artist.

This is actually his first non-digital release. Each piece of the physical CD is handprinted, although listeners can also grab the digital record at a name-your-price option.

Trippy and melodramatic, are two words you might find yourself describing this record. Filled with 10 cuts that range from 1-4 minutes, the compilation provides a beautiful escape. Named after a race track in Hong Kong, Happy Valley is an important place for Howl since according to him, this was the place where most of the cuts here were “dreamt up.”

Although the album begins with HV, which serves as more of a prolonged intro rather than a track by itself, the cut runs close to 2 minutes and serves as a doorway into the complex and cool world inside.

Forests, begin the compilation proper with a single haunted by trip hop beats and melancholic vocals. It’s a slow and slightly cerebral cut. Meanwhile, Falling, is a hardcore mix of sounds. Elements of electronica, dance and ambient atmosphere are present in this somewhat dark and gritty track.

All of the songs on here were written and performed by Howl with the exception of The Himalayas, which sounds like a celebratory track coupled with 80s British synth pop vocals.

To sum up, this is an unexpectedly likable record. Despite being very low-key in certain instances, you’ll find that the songs have that special touch that makes you want to listen to what the singer has to say or in most cases, want to communicate through ticks, beats and rhythms. This is a worthy download if you ask me. Check it out for yourself.

Birdview: June EP

Continuing on with their tradition of releasing one compilation per month, the Birdview crew is at it again with their June release.

June EP is a huge set consisting of 22 tracks, mixed and done by some of the best underground producers all over the world. They each contribute to create and release a free album for fans of underground, experimental, techno, dub and hip hop to name a few.

This June compilation features the same fresh and innovative sound; something you would expect from talented producers and mixers.

Expect a mix of tastes to mingle in this great compilation. There are strictly dancefloor made tunes on here while at the same time, you’ll find tracks that are more suited for a quiet retreat to your rest house.

If you’re the type who prefers to pick out individual tracks in compilation records, rest assured, you’ll find a lot of great ones to add on your playlist from this album.

Infectious from Rootkit, is set up as a staple on the dancefloor. The young producer (only 14) hails from Norway and is a new addition to the Birdview crew. Maximoe’s Yester and To, provide a smooth hip hop feel that’s perfect for laid-back listening. On the other hand, Far From Me from Aether is another cool cut to bookmark while chilling out.

The Birdview project was initially started in February 2012 by producers/musicians, Rylee Rabbit, Forrest Blunt and Ryddim. So far, they’ve stuck to the plan of creating a free downloadable release each month. June E.P., is a great compilation that you should grab. Baby Brave and the Love Bites: The Hornet’s Nest of Unrequited Ambition that was 1960′s Vogue

When Emily and Jo of Love Bites join forces with Sian and Mike of the Braves, you can never get less than perfection. In The Hornet’s Nest of Unrequited Ambition that was 1960′s Vogue, the four-piece indie pop machine paints a series of peculiar lyrics and sunny folk melodies.

Baby Brave and the Love Bites opens the set with CockRoach, a record that infuses toe-tapping beats with highly infectious melodies reminiscent of Camera Obscura.

Thirsty seconds on 24 blues and you get images of a chill summer afternoon in the city. Saccharine female vocals play around as they tumble and slither down each note. A chorus that sounds like a round-nursery song splashes colors and energy all throughout the track.

Hedgehog slows things a sustaining guitar note, accompanied with hints of drums and hand clapping.

A personal favorite, Take Your Castle to Spain encapsulates the band’s sound. Press play and get lost in feverish beats, flute solos, and melting vocals.

In The Hornet’s Nest of Unrequited Ambition that was 1960′s Vogue, the band sparks up something magical that keeps the listener hooked from start to finish.

B. Eure III: A Mind’s Canvas

B. Eure III or Bernard Eure III definitely knows how to create cool, laid back beats; the kind you can play on a quiet Saturday night while chillin’ with your friends.

A Mind’s Canvas is the first album from this Virginia based artist. He doesn’t waste anybody’s time and right from the start showcases his penchant for catchy rhythm and great rhymes.

According to the artist, “this album is a self produced project I dedicate to the ever presence lesson of life, love and the struggle to balance it all. A mind is truly a canvas because what we see and experience constitutes the images and beliefs engraved in it.” �

It’s not everyday you get a spectacular mini EP that impresses from beginning to end, A Mind’s Canvas is one of those rare moments and it’s filled with special tracks that are hard to ignore.

My Life, opens up the compilation and starts it strong. Expect to end up tapping your feet or doing a little sway with your head as you listen to this track. It’s cool and catchy and guaranteed to leave you with a dose of last-song-syndrome. Right up next is The Verge, featuring a smoother beat, B. Eure’s vocals starts to really shine. The groove is nice and it’s just smooth throughout.

Meanwhile, If I Had a Dollar and Others fill the tracks in between and each song has its own personality. Crash, beautifully closes the record in style as it sways with beautiful grooves and B. Eure’s gorgeous pipes.

Overall, there’s only 5 tracks on this record but if you love soul then it’s almost guaranteed you’re going to love the entire set. Hopefully there’s more to come from this talented singer/producer. It’ll be something to look forward to that’s for sure. Grab the download for the meantime. Enjoy!

Pet Milk: Philadelphia Punklife

Formed in 2010, Pet Milk is a Pennsylvania band that’s fairly new in the scene but it seems they already found a good niche.

Philadephia Punklife is far from a punk EP you would expect; instead it’s filled with sweet pop rock that’s fitted for some feel-good movie. It contains only four tracks but it does the trick if you’re trying to decide whether this band will make it to your personal playlist.

This is the second release for the crew. Their first record was a Demo back in 2010 and their most recent release is a live single titled, Don’t Get Out.

Subtle and sweet, this indie shoegaze pop album seems tailor made for fun summer days. Philadephia Punklife starts with the uptempo Phantom Lovers. Even though you can hardly make out the vocals, the beat is catchy and easily gives off a pleasant mood.

Meanwhile, I Don’t Love Anyone is a mild Bikini Kill-inspired cut. The sugary vocals and fun beat makes the song an easy favorite. You’ll find yourself bobbing your head easily. Christian Solicitors employ a more new wave touch but still carries that same undefined vocals which seem to sink deep into the instruments.

Finally, the EP is finished off with Husker Dudes. It’s one of the most catchy cuts on the EP. Involving a more punk rock mix compared to the others, the male vocals make an appearance and the guitar riffs in the back ground solidify the track.

These songs seem made for teens and the perennial fun times as well as romance that seem to be so magical at this age. It’s a nice little getaway compilation if you like saccharine shoegaze pop rock. Take a listen and grab the free download.
