Before Carsie Blanton‘s Buoy and Idiot Heart, let’s backtrack to the singer/songwriter’s first musical effort entitled Ain’t So Green.

Based in New Orleans, Carsie has made a name for herself touring with Shawn Colvin, Joan Osborne, The Weepies, and Loudon Wainwright III, among others. Though many may describe Carsie’s sound as folk or jazz, the artist categorizes her music as American pop.

Released in 2005, Ain’t So Green features 12 hefty tracks that set that stage to the singer’s career. First stop is Promise, a well-polished song laced with saccharine strings and Carsie’s clean, sugary delivery.

Anything At All follows with a funky attitude. Lively saxophone solos add a jazzy flair to the track. A heart-melting melody, Ain’t So Green wears and tears your heart with well-written, wistful lines.

Playing with acoustic strings, Take Me Along! is an easy-listening track that’s too good to be left unheard. While Lovesick is an ideal lounge song with sultry harmonies over guitars and drums.

Carsie closes the album with stripped down strings. Redemption Blues paints a solitary image of self reflection and letting go. Subtle yet powerful, it’s a perfect way for the singer to sign off.

There is no denying on the talent of Carsie Blanton‘s in both songwriting and performing, and this album’s radio-polished tracks prove it.

Track List:
1. Promise
2. Anything At All
3. Ain’t So Green
4. Don’t Wanna Know
5. Everybody’s All Alone
6. Take Me Along!
7. Lovesick
8. Temporary Lapse
9. Time
10. Wedding Song
11. Willing to Fall
12. Redemption Blues

Here is yet another outstanding album from Nick Roberts and Josh Morris better known as And the Giraffe. With a Sold Out CD Package, the duo’s latest offering Something for Someone features six tracks that puts dream folk music on a pedestal.

Hailing from Gainesville, Florida, the band started when the best friends/musical duo met during an orientation meeting for the University in Gainesville and decided to jam together. After few local shows, Josh moved to Nashville and collaborated with Nick via the Internet. When Josh returned during the summer of 2011, the two were already determined to record their first EP. Currently, they are planning a tour within the year.

Underground Love welcomes the ears with oozes of ambient, hypnotic charm. Close your eyes as this track’s laid back vibe paint vivid soundscapes.

Slowly building up like waves in the ocean, 1055 follows up with a long intro of hazy electric guitar strums. A stripped-down earthly delivery adds an indie flair to this sonic goldmine.

In Welshrats, the duo teases our ears with saccharine acoustic strings. Ghostly vocals casts a nostalgic feel to the whole track.

Ambient and playful as it comes, Magic 8 is the ideal backdrop for a cold night. Cuddle up with a loved one and devour in this pristine song.

Still seals the album with a light kiss of subtle drum beats and hazy tunes. This slow and soothing serenade will surely transport you to blissful dreams.

One thing that makes Something for Someone great is that it takes much artistic freedom from its instrumentation. And the Giraffe has created an album that features tracks with the same ambient stroke, the kind of music that offers listeners a sweet escape, even for a little while.

Just like freshly-brewed coffee and fluffy pancakes, start your day right with a healthy serving of Shortstraw‘s new album entitled Good Morning, Sunshine.

Awarded as the Best Indie Band at the 2012 MK Music Awards, Shorstraw is a five-piece Johannesburg-based band composed of Alistair (lead vocals/guitar), Oliver (drums, backing vocals), Russell (bass guitar), Tom (lead guitar), and Gad (keys, backing vocals).

Originally a two-piece drums/guitar band, the boys formally took the name Shortstraw and started performing gigs in 2008. They have been making waves in the indie scene as an opening act for The Kooks for the 5Gum experience and is currently touring South Africa.

Packed with a collection of 12 polished tracks, Good Morning, Sunshine travails the trash folk indie territories with a splash of trip-happy attitude.

Kicking things off is Couch Potato, a lively folk ensemble that mixes quirky guitar play-ups with some energetic drum lashes. One thing’s that makes this track stand out is its hip and well-written lines. Surely, this sonic gem will find its way to anyone’s playlist

Gimme My Fix (It’s Only Recreational) follows the same sonic mold as the previous track, though it’s a bit edgier in its drum notes. Alistair’s enthralling vocals gives more power to the track.

Title track Good Morning, Sunshine and Bikini Weather make the ideal summer anthem as both shed hints of surf pop rock in every melody. While The Wedding Blues treats us some thick riffs and heavy guitar arrangement. Press play and let Alistair and Shane Durrant’s vocal slithers in every beat.

The collection closes in a soft cooing folk blend with 127 hours. The simple, saccharine folk strings build slowly to a celebration of drum beats, horns, and keys.

In Good Morning, Sunshine, the band has planted their spot in the indie landscape. With fun, infectious tunes and strong lyricism, Shortstraw is certainly something to look out for.

Track List:
1. Couch Potato
2. Gimme My Fix (It’s Only Recreational)
3. Good Morning, Sunshine
4. Cold Shoulder
5. Bikini Weather
6. Mo Money (Featuring Zubz)
7. LCBSS
8. Say My Name
9. Boxing Day
10. The Wedding Blues (Featuring Shane Durrant)
11. Backbone
12. 127 Hours

If your’e in the mood for some hazy, garage rock and saccharine pop, then High Pop is the band you should be listening to.

After a successful run with their previous record, Hip Hip Hooray delivers the same sweet and intoxicating punk fuzz pop they’ve come to master. Treading this route the second time around has its benefits though, the band sounds more polished than ever and seem more comfortable with their chosen genre.

Be prepared for track after track of energy filled, freaky indie rock mixed with a whole lot of sugary pop when you listen to this record.

Hip Hip Hooray is like a long lost cassette or record you discover one lazy summer afternoon. The more you listen to the album, the easier it is to get lost in the mood and imagery painted by the music.

Kickstarting this love affair is the fuzzy indie folk pop number, Loner. It’s a track that maintains the right amount of lo-fi dirty guitars, warbled vocals and catchy harmony to mimic how it feels like to look through a kaleidoscope of colorful beauty.

Each track resonates with a lo-fi appeal that’s highlighted by the beautiful harmonies High Pop creates even with just simple instruments. A few cuts worth noting include Crawl, I Like the Smell, Sparkler as well as the grungy, Fast Kids.

Personally, the album is refreshing. It’s hard not to compare it to a soundtrack in a Sofia Coppola film; beautiful, ethereal and all that indie lo-fi goodness rolled into one.

If you have a soft spot for this type of music then don’t skip out on this one. The album is worth checking out and downloading, no doubt about it.

If you need some cheerful music where you can sing along and simply be happy, take a listen to The Oh Hellos. Siblings, Tyler and Maggie Heath along with some friends, join together to create this remarkable indie folk, alternative concept album of sorts.

According to the duo, the record is meant to be listened to straight; all of it in one sitting and enjoyed entirely. Through the Deep, Dark Valley is an 11-track album sprinkled with sweet and happy indie folk sounds.

Although there are plenty of themes and subjects explored in the lyrics, most of it centers around faith and overcoming ones mistakes. Filled with charming tracks, it’s an album that cleanses and refreshes.

Opening track, The Valley, is an uptempo single that sounds as if it’s welcoming you into its open arms. Featuring vocal chorales, upbeat guitar strumming and an overall joyful atmosphere; this is one track worth noting. Following closely is Like the Dawn which is a melodic track with guitar plucking and lovely, sweet vocals by Maggie. It’s a stirring cut that conjures up images of campfire melodies with friends and family.

In Memoriam, The Lament of Eustace Scrubb and Wishing Well are among the quieter tracks on the record. Each one is reflective and carries a bit of melancholia in it. Meanwhile, When I Was Young and The Truth is a Cave, are both more jovial while carrying a nice message in them.

The Oh Hellos might be new to this but they certainly know how to capture the listener’s attention. Delivering catchy tracks with poetic lyrics, this is a celebratory record that’s filled with hope and happiness. The quieter cuts are calming and helps to create a nice pace for the record. If you love The Lumineers, Sufjan Stevens and the likes give Through the Deep, Dark Valley a listen. You will definitely enjoy!

For the last two years, the Aaahh Record’s crew gathered up several musicians and holed up in a small village called Bralitz (somewhere near Berlin.) With nothing but music, plenty of time and some fresh air, they’ve been creating wonderful music and have been churning them out in little compilations like this one.

This Braaahhlitz Compilation is the result of last year’s mini gathering. It’s comprised of 8 tracks filled with guitars, flutes, a whole lot of handclaps and just simple music that makes your hearts flutter or gather up that book and curl up in the corner.

With guitars and some neat whistling, Angela opens up the record. Armed with trumpets and sweet singing, the song has a nice “loungey,” laid-back folk feel to it. It makes you wonder who Angela is by the end of it all. Following closely is Easy to Say. There’s the same jaunty tune and beautiful guitar playing. Flutes decorate the background and complement the somber, low-key vocals.

Balkan Chameleon, on the other hand, is a gypsy folk number the guys probably recorded while gathered around the night campfire. Meanwhile, Mono and Horsemen, drag down the tempo and create an atmosphere of mystery, tension, misery and reflection. Both tracks are quite rich lyrically and musically. They’re the kind you can leave on as background music while you drift off into your dreamland.

If you love these tracks, you’ll have something to look forward to this year as the guys prepare for Braaahhlitz 2013 this August. They’re also giving people a chance to drop by. You can check out more at their site. For the meantime, don’t miss out on this one. You’ll find a track to love on here, that’s for sure.

Related Links:

And the Giraffe‘s third album is an ambient folk treasure. ln Creature Collector, Nick Roberts and Josh Morris serenades us with six tracks of superfluous dream folk.

Hailing from Gainesville, Florida, And the Giraffe started when the best friends/musical duo met in a college orientation meeting and decided to jam together. After few local gigs, Josh moved to Nashville but still collaborated with Nick online. When he returned during the summer of 2011, the two were already set to record the band’s first EP.

Released last year, the album takes on the same sonic aesthetic as their previous release entitled Something for Someone. The beat drops in Find My Name in the Sun which blends seamless acoustic strings and spacey electronic sounds. I love how the song slowly builds and escalates into a stronger ending infused with heavy electric guitars.

The band showcases their ambient acoustic prowess in Of the Moment as they experiment with steady foot-stomping melodies, reverberating electro tunes, and layered vocals. Low, rapid drum beats stirs off a raw, dark energy within the song.

Enough is Enough closes up the album in a soothing piano and string ensemble. Press play, close your eyes, and let layers over layers of jazzy arrangement transport you to a nostalgic journey.

Seldom do you encounter a band that balances consistency and originality, but And the Giraffe delivers more than that. In Creature Collector, the listeners are treated to a heavy dose of psychedelic ambient high.

Track list:
1. Find My Name in the Sun
2. Of the Moment
3. Sorry
4. The Silent
5. Take Care
6. Enough is Enough

If you’re idea of a relaxing afternoon includes having the perfect music to accompany your little getaway, then you should take a listen to Yesper.

There’s no band in here though; only one man with glasses, a slight beard and his guitar playing the sweetest indie acoustic folk you’ll come across. Recorded in an empty Seattle storefront, Cannibal King is a 5-track mini release filled with nothing but the kind of tracks you can relax and fall asleep to, in a good way of course.

Kicking things off is the title track, Cannibal King. Coupled with simple guitar work and a nice melody, the track is instantly likable. Whether you’re the type who likes to listen to the lyrics or simply prefer to enjoy the rhythm and melody, this song will put your soul at ease.

Racer, follows next and it’s a slightly upbeat single that features a steady beat and hypnotic vocal work. Right at the middle part, there’s a slight lull but it manages to maintain its charm nonetheless. Secret and Weight, come in next. Both are acoustic gems and enriches the album’s roster of tracks. Final single, Hovercars, is a subtle acoustic indie piece that caps the record perfectly.

Overall, you have five cuts that are harmonious, relaxing and utterly charming. It’s hard not to fall in love with these tracks especially if you’re a sucker for indie acoustic folk.

The short record is available at a free/name-your-price-download over at BandCamp. Grab it and enjoy!

Track list:
1. cannibal king
2. racer
3. secret
4. weight
5. hovercars

Back with a brand new record that resonates with warm and rich instruments; banjo-wielding bearded guru, Jacob Montague proves that he’s ready to entertain and mesmerize listeners again.

Jacob is actually no stranger to the Frostclick blog. His previous records, Fly On and On a Tightrope to the Sun have been featured here before.

Tiger and Traveler consists of three parts in its 11-track entirety and is based on a short story written by the artist with her sister. Every single track is beautiful, conjuring up thoughts of relaxation and comfort. It’s a fitting soundtrack for quiet getaways in some far away location.

The first 6 tracks make up the first part of the record. According to the liner, this serves as the “heart of the album.” The tracks were recorded in a 2 year span and are more organic in feel compared to the previous records. Traveler and Side of the Highway are two tracks worth checking out in the first part.

Part 2 includes tracks number 7 and 8 (The Unheard Parade & Observation Wheel the former is a great blend of banjo strings and slightly upbeat melody while the latter focuses more on expert guitar plucking with pianos on occasion.

The third part of the record consists of three cuts serving as score to a short movie called, “Moriah.” Infused with somber pianos and coupled with dreary and dramatic bits; the track makes a great soundtrack for living in a dream world.

Montague’s sound has evolved throughout his releases but at the core of it all is a talented instrumentalist and banjo player that can create emotional and heartfelt cuts worthy of a listen. If you’re a fan of the singer’s previous works, there’s no reason you won’t like this one as well.

Sonically astounding, Photocomfort is an artist that should be on top of any indie folk lover’s radar. Bursting into the scene from out of nowhere, it’s amazing that talent and music like this has been kept hidden for so long.

Led by twenty-something, Justine Bowe and her friend, Mike Moschetto, this self-titled debut is far too short, luckily every inch of it is packed with the kind of music you can bring with you anywhere and play anytime without ever wanting anything else.

The record is led by 5 tracks that evoke emotions, feelings, thoughts and transcend beyond reason. Listeners are not obliged to love it but it’s hard not to react favorably towards the beautiful sound. If you love Feist, Imogen Heap and even a bit of Tori Amos, you will find a new bestfriend in this mini compilation.

Straight from the first track, you can already tell this will be one special record. My Mistake is written wisely and captures a moment of reflection and whimsy. Weaving a catchy melody and charming rhythm, Photocomfort skilfully creates a track that’s likable upon first listen.

As the first single draws you in, Night Sewing keeps you entranced with its nice acoustic folk rhythm coupled with handclaps and Justine’s signature hypnotic vocals. It’s likely a track for when mystical fairies gather and dance the night away right along the moonlit garden.

Holy Ropes shifts the mood slightly with a darker atmosphere. It still maintains an upbeat melody though.

The last two tracks, Wind Fall and Coal Cave, are relatively slower compared to the previous cuts. The former has a nice jazzy, folk feel to it. Opening with lovely piano work joined in by violins as well as appropriate rhythmic beat; the song is mesmerizing to listen to. On the other hand, the latter track is a quiet acoustic piece that allows Justine’s vocals to take center stage.

Photocomfort is a rare find. I won’t blame you if you place the album on repeat since it’s definitely worth it. Although it can be classified as atmospheric indie folk music, the album actually covers plenty of genres embedded within its harmonies and melodies. Regardless of the tag, there’s no denying that this is a beautiful record. Don’t miss out and grab the download. It’ll be worth every minute.

Track list:
1. My Mistake
2. Night Sewing
3. Holy Ropes
4. Wind Fall
5. Coal Cave
