With the amount of electronic musicians out there, it’s hard to find really good quality ones. Luckily, Finding Time by Ten Million Sounds has made everything easier by compiling the best electro/ambient music around.

Finding Time by Ten Million Sounds

Featuring 13 ambient, electronic and downtempo beats; Finding Time serves as the second compilation from Ten Million Sounds and is meant to take listeners through a relaxing stroll. According to their liner notes, it’s curated “for the most peaceful hours of the day, these thirteen tracks will take you from late night into the early morning sunrise, connecting atmospheric beats with a love for our natural environment.”

True to their word, the album is comprised of nothing but the most melodic and relaxing electronic downtempo hip hop to grace your ears. A track from Aether titled Solace, opens up the soothing compilation. Composed of a steady, relaxing beat coupled with the occasional vocal sample; the track liberates and calms the nerves on an edgy day.

Jimmy Whoo’s Star Child adds a bit of funk and soul to the compilation. Combining a nice bassline beat along with smooth jazz and soul touches, it’s one of those tracks you groove along to on a quiet Saturday night. Rob Viktum’s 4/17/1975 is another lovely single that’s definitely worth noting.

Truth be told, this is one of the few electronic compilations that has gotten me very excited. It’s a record composed of cool, chill out ambient tracks that are so relaxing it seeps through your bones. Filled with an equal portion of hip hop and electronica aesthetics, it’s the best of both worlds. The best part is that you can get this at a free/pay-what-you-want-download. All proceeds will be donated to a non-profit organization called Smile Train. The organization helps provide funding for corrective cleft palate surgery for children.

BJ Block & Dawn Pemberton: II

Simply titled, II; BJ Block and Dawn Pemberton’s second collaboration bears the same uplifting positive emotion and� meaningful lyrics that has made their first effort, The Land of Make Believe, a huge success.

They’ve continued the tradition of releasing their albums free and everybody is getting a chance to hear it first via Frostwire. Containing eight soulful tracks, it bears the familiar sound of jazz, funk, R&B and gospel that has become a trademark for the feel-good, positive and�chill vibe of their resonates with.

After a short introduction, the record opens with Ready Or Not. It lays solid ground for the album by providing a smooth r&b groove and highlighting Dawn’s mesmerizing vocal work. BJ’s smooth guitars along with the groovy bass synch-in nicely adding a jazzy atmosphere that transports a calmness to every fiber of your body as you listen om. It’s a perfect combination that only these two talented musicians can pull off.

Expect to hear more of this combo as you cycle through the record. Sometimes, for instance, slows down the tempo just right. If you ever need that perfect love song to play as you dance with your partner or have that candlelit dinner, this is the song to put on. If you’re in the mood for dancing, Without A Doubt and What Comes Naturally will help you get your groove on.

As the album winds down, gospel inspired We Cry and Falling Into You closes on a positive note. Providing uplifting lyrical inspiration as well as amazing instrument work.

Converging in a glorious path, BJ Block and Dawn Pemberton have created a special record that communicates beauty, honesty, positivity and raw emotions. It is mesmerizing and will be an absolute delight to listen to no matter what time of the day or no matter what occasion.

BJ Block is a classically trained musician and has been in love with the craft since he was 15. He used to play and tour for acoustic rock band The Ernest Goodlife Band. Meanwhile, Dawn Pemberton also had an early start in her love for sound. She changed course from piano playing to explore and hone her wonderful voice; singing gospel, jazz, R&B and funk. She is a considered a prominent figure in the Vancouver scene with more than 30 years experience under her belt singing and playing on over 35 recordings.

The success of “Make Believe” inspired BJ and Dawn to keep creating – “II” is fun funded entirely through Kickstarter! Atupa: QuatribaRap

You don’t really need to know a particular language in order to enjoy music. As trite as it sounds, music is a universal language. It communicates through emotions and sounds.

Atupa’s sound is one such example of music transcending the barriers of language. Even if you don’t understand a shred of what the boys are rapping about,�you’re still in for a good listen.

QuatribaRap was released last July 2012 and it’s currently offered absolutely free over at the group’s BandCamp page.

QuatribaRap is a meeting ground of sound. From rap, hip hop, dub, funk and bass; the record brings together all these elements and transforms them into catchy tracks. The group cites that they hope to create a meeting ground for the burgeoning rap scene in Valencia and from the sound of things they’re certainly off to a great start.

After a short 40-second intro, the album gets it on with the title track, QuatribaRap. It’s a track that stands on solid ground, built on a foundation of dub, synths and catchy hip hop groove. Even though you might not understand the language, there’s no denying that these boys have rhyming skills worth showing off.

A few other cuts worth noting include��L’ Estel (Amb Estel),�Llengua (Amb Atzembla),�Cabr�, que te la fas!, and�Beodisme II.�

Overall, Atupa is an awesome group to check out. QuatribaRap presents quite a handful of engaging tracks that’ll easily make a fan of any random listener. Don’t hesitate to listen in. The beats and general rhythm should be enough to help you decide if this is right up your alley. Definitely worth the grab.

Baptman: Under The Influence

Serving as a mixtape for the indie film, Influencers; Baptman’s Under the Influence serves as a beautiful gateway to the film and its idealogy.

The film discusses how trends today are easily spread and digested, whether its in fashion, music or entertainment.

Taking this premise, Baptman infuses his sound with beautiful electronica, hip hop, jazz, indie and even rock elements while also sprinkling inspiring lyrics here and there.As mentioned, the film, The Influencers explores the real meaning of being an “influencer.” It dissects how trends in music, fashion and general creativity trickle down to affect others. It breaks down (in a non statistical manner) what makes a person a proponent of these trends and becoming a strong influence among peers and other people.

True to its exploration of creativity in the subject matter, the film documentary is a collection of interviews and Polaroid snapshots of some of the best influencers from various generations. It’s a short but profound piece that creatives would definitely enjoy.

The album, on the other hand, is a laid-back hip hop, jazz compilation interspersed with encouraging spoken tidbits. After seeing the mini-film, there’s no doubt that the record hits the nail on the head. You’ll hear great beats from Gaston, J.Cole, Miike Snow (Mark Ronson Remix, and Aloe Blacc to name a few.

It’s a record worth checking out even if you never hit play on the documentary. It’s a terrific record that manages to stand on its own. You can mosey on over to BandCamp to grab the free download. Enjoy!

Diner House: Selections from the Diner House Family Bands

Not much is offered online about this project except for the fact that it’s the first installation in a compilation and features some really beautiful songs from talented artists.

Composed of 10 tracks from various amazing musicians, Selections from the Diner House Family Bands, is a tasty sandwich of punk, alternative, folk, and acoustic that offer up a real treat.

It offers music from bands such as Wood Spider, Whale, Whale, Whale, Michael Ditrio, Hyena, and The Rotten Jazz Quartet among many others.

Starting with the Bright Eyes sounding opening single, Tiger Death 3; Whale, Whale, Whale makes a good impression from the get-go. The listener is escorted into a world of acoustic guitars, moody, sometimes dark drumming as well as unusual vocals. The song is both soothing and haunting at the same time. It’s a bit short but it’s enough to stir up intrigue about the band.

Meanwhile, Wood Spider is a lofi-freak folk English band that could give Gogol Bordello a run for his money. In their Facebook page, they describe themselves as creating music that “the monster under your bed listens to when he’s drunk and alone.” Lonesome Shore is a great track to keep you company if you feel like philosophizing in your inebriated state.

Other songs worth noting include the blue grass/jazz inspired cut, Stones, from New York natives, The Rotten Jazz Quartet. One of my favorite cuts from the record. There’s also the odd lo-fi cut from Abraxas that’ll appeal to your eclectic side.

All in all, the album is a worthy download. You’ll find plenty of great bands to love and songs you can add as a staple to your playlist. Check it out.

Monarchs: ft. Celeste – a Monarchs Mixtape

Monarchs is a surprising band that people who enjoy hip hop, alternative and soul should take note of. The group is led by the sultry and sexy Southern belle, Celeste Griffin.

Currently based in Austin, Texas; the singer has several backing musicians that help complete her crew. Together, they come together to create a powerful and soulful sound complete with catchy beats and samples.

Ft. Celeste - A Monarchs Mixtape is their latest record. They’ve released previous ones too, particularly The Rise and Fall; Those Words, Those Frames and The Oak EP. All of which are up for purchase over at BandCamp.

Taking inspiration from musicians as diverse as Amy Winehouse, Conor Oberst, The Beatles, Lauryn Hill and Gillian Welch; the group’s sound bob between various genres. One minute listeners are treated to a smooth hip hop sound while on the other they get an upbeat soul pop track. In spite of the genre bending, the songs flow beautifully and come with a touch of swagger.

One of my personal picks include opening cut, Loose in the Knees which seems perfect for laid-back block parties or simply hanging out with your girlfriends. There’s also Gets That Thing, which contains a playful beat reminiscent of a child’s ditty.

Most of the tracks are a bit short, clocking in at less than 2 minutes save for one track. Although the album features nice pacing, the short tracks feel like they were intentionally cut off or simply left unfinished. Nevertheless, the album is still refreshing. It’s short, sweet and straight to the point; allowing listeners to simply take in all the good things without much thought. Listen and enjoy.

Wolfwolf: Happy Heart Breaks LP

Eighties sounding synths and a hypnotic little persona help complete Wolfwolf’s musical enigma. Combining 80s music with laid back R&B and a slight dance beat, Happy Heart Breaks LP is an interesting little compilation that’s worth your time.

Gathering together 8 tracks, the album doesn’t only include catchy tunes but also ooze a subtle sexiness at the same time. Designed to make you want to take yourself to the dancefloor and enjoy the night away; each track is a beautiful cacophony of groovy beats and vocals.

Starting with the happy and upbeat, Took So Long; the track has a strong dancing-all-night-by the beach feel that’s coupled with a retro sounding mix of instruments. Wolfwolf’s weapon of choice include a MicroKORG XL, MPD Midi Controller, a twin set of V-Drum pads and a Macbook Pro. These help recreate a host of sounds that reflects a nice 80s electro funk vibe. Tracks like Get To Know You and My City are two other great tracks you can check out if you want to get a feel for the record before fully diving in.

Listening to the album, it’s hard to imagine that Wolfwolf is actually a classically trained musician, getting his start by playing the piano at age 3 before moving to the violins, trumpets, drums, guitar and even the trombone. Eventually, he moved on to much more modern instruments. The artist has also released quite a few records under his belt but in a different alias.

As Wolfwolf, Happy Heart Breaks LP is among his first compilation and it’s obviously making a mark. Today, he’s known for having a visually entertaining as well as musically interesting live performances. Donning his custom made leather mask and looking dapper in a suit, he skillfully weaves his sound and creates some of the best dancefloor tracks worth checking out. Take a listen.

The Revelations feat. Tre Williams: An Introduction To…

An Introduction To… is a collection of several blues and R&B tracks sung by soulful group The Revelations featuring Tre Williams.

If you have a special place in your heart for lovely blues music; then this album will be a terrific find. It has all the right elements of the genre and exudes awesome talent as well as fine musicianship.

This 9-track album served as a sampler for fans prior to The Revelations releasing their full length record, Concrete Blues. Filled with great instruments, catchy hooks and some fine, fine singing; it’s hard to deny the beauty and allure of this album.

Much of the album is composed of tracks done by the band over several years. It also includes 5 cuts that was included in their debut album, Concrete Blues which was released last November 8, 2011.

Listening to The Revelations is like being transported to the heydays of 70s soul jazz. They have the capacity to create mood and great atmosphere with their songs. Opening with the sultry, Graceful Bow; the album starts with a track that’s a complete lady-pleaser. Sing this track to any woman in your life and you’ll definitely get some good vibes.

Much of the other cuts combine gorgeous lyrics and smooth rhythm. You’ll get songs like Until You Get Enough of Me, which is a track professing love to a woman despite incurring infidelity. There’s also, How Could You Walk Away, which laments a partner walking away from the relationship. Meanwhile, Heavy Metal Blues, combines a more funky blues feel that includes some fine guitar riffs.

Overall, the album covers a lot of bases when it comes to the themes. They include social commentary tracks as well as R&B staples about relationships, love and sex. Vocally, Tre Williams lets his talent come to a full shine; crooning sultry tracks one after another. In the end, this is one of the few albums you’ll put on without ever feeling the need to skip out on a track. Beautiful songs with great craftsmanship; it’s definitely worth grabbing.

WolF J McFarlane: UpSideDownDay (Tapemix)

This mixtape from WolF J McFarlane might be a few years old, but the sound is as current as ever. Blasting your ears with a great mix of samples, catchy beats and uptempo tracks; the album is a great audio experience from beginning to end.

UpSideDownDay was released back in December 2009 and combines a flurry of tracks that’s best described as “neo hip hop.” Mixing traditional beats and samples with unexpected rhymes and sounds; the album is a refreshing take on the usual hip hop sound.

Here’s a little excerpt from his site about the artist:

WolF J McFarlane is part of a new wave of artistes who focus on developing themselves in all disciplines of art. A graphic designer, videographer and most importantly a singer/songwriter, Wolf is inviting eyes and ears to a reality of his own, a technicolour soundscape. His music is a mixture of Hip-Hop and alternative pop, and his writing is a focus on matters of the heart conceptualized through otherworldly imagery and metaphors. (WolfJ.com)

Indeed, just listening to the first few tracks you’ll recognize the artists’ overabundance of talent. Opening with the title single, the track combines spoken word with a breezy, R&B / electro beat. It’s a short intro but the kind that sticks to you the moment you hear it. It’s followed by Cut Fabric, which showcases a more danceable rhythm and some thought provoking lyrics. The catchy chorus is perfect for any dance club. Seriously, it’s hard not to like this song after just one listen.

The more you listen to the album, the more you’ll notice the various types of sounds and genres explored in much of the cuts. From rock, world music, electro, trip hop, even tribal percussions; every single thing is carefully and skillfully paired with great rhymes. The lyrics in most tracks are also worth checking out.

UpSideDownDay brings a new type of hip hop that pushes the boundaries of what the industry holds as the norm these days. You won’t regret grabbing this album at all. It’s amazing that it’s even offered for free. Take a listen.

Everybody Left: Everybody Left

If you miss the good old days of the 90s when you put on the radio and hear 311 or the Red Hot Chili Peppers creating some funky tracks; you’ll probably enjoy listening to Everybody Left.

Describing their sound as post ska, reluctant reggae and Funk-Hop; the band sure knows how to throw down catchy beats that don’t require much thought.

This British Columbia group is composed of Stephen Chatterton, Eric “The Red” Wickman, Steve “Shaggy” Fissel, ”Ad-Mac” Adam McIntyre, Steve “Saxman” Cowie and Martin Milbo Schoeps.

Released back in June 2010, this self titled debut serves as a band introduction of sorts. They were formed out of frustration from the various members with their respective groups at that time. According to the group, they were “4 guys joined forces to create the music that they wanted to make. Not wanting to conform to any set genre or sound, they just wanted to play music and record a CD. Before the CD dies off completly (sic).”

The entire album is self-produced and was recorded in Off The Goose Studio, the band’s own. What resulted from this is a fusion of reggae pop and funk with hints of hip hop. Even though they shun the comparison, their sound does echo off Sublime quite a bit. Tracks like Rock Slow and Treble in Paradise are upbeat and the type of tracks you can imagine playing in those 90s videos of guys driving around the neighborhood in their top down cars.

Pretty much, the entire 7-track compilation echoes with this sentiment. It’s made to be played in the background to a laid-back, lazy day. If you are looking to trigger some 90s reggae funk nostalgia, you should take a listen to this one. It’s available as a free download over at BandCamp.
