For those who want a break from all the indie rock they’ve been playing lately, Dead Unicorncan provide something more potent.

Global Thermonuclear War is a hardcore slight emocore rock record that provides louder drums, vocals, bass and pretty much everything. This is the sophomore album for the band after their initial release,Yellow Supervolcano.

This one is about two years old and is available for free download over at BandCamp. It’s also licensed under a Creative Commons.

Although the boys are currently more focused on running Music for End Times, their label; it doesn’t mean that they can’t churn some good tracks as Dead Unicorn if they want to. The people behind the label and the sound are primarilyZac Shaw and Paul Heath.

Global Thermonuclear War is a 14-song compilation that combines samples, deep bass, occasional screaming and some fast drums. Starting the album loud and proud, So Much For Us is an easy favorite. With slight wailing and skillful bass playing, the song is essentially a template of good hard screamo rock. Although the recording isn’t that clean, the unpolished sound adds a nice touch to the aesthetic of the record.

Meanwhile, other must-check out songs from the album include Hiroshima, which includes a sample as well as some really angsty lyrics. There’s also Defcon and final track, Big Finish. The nice thing about the album is that it contains little bursts of intermission tracks particularly, United States of Emergency, First Strike, and ICBM; all of whichare worthy gems if you ask me.

This is a great find for those who love screamo and hardcore rock. Most, if not all of the songs are likable and something that you can leave playing without much thought. Take a listen and enjoy!

Judging from the band’s name itself, Fear Report, you could already get a glimpse of what kind of music they have to offer. Fear Report is honest, straightforward, emotional and most of all delivers a 90s rock feel that is rare in today’s scene and genre.

Their unique sound comes mainly from their diverse musical influences. From post-hardcore to metal edge to grunge to indie and alternative, this is what Fear Report is. Your ordinary five man rock band but has always something new to bring to the table.

Pandemic is a thirteen track album that tells a different story with each song. It hits home in so many ways that it’s so hard to nail down just one.

Viral takes on the struggles of life that went mayhem and spun out of control. Rear View Mind tells us the important lesson of not being able to move forward if you always look back and let your past affect your future.

The Front Line is a straight up fitting song to show support to the troops risking their lives for their country. Paper Wings and a Handgun is a transcending emotional song that asks you the question “what have you done in your life and is it good enough?”

Thre things that really stood up are the immense rhythm section which is both precise and relentless, the guitar work which offers massive riffage in chord arrangements, lastly the depth of the song arrangement. While the songs are cast in a heavy motif, there’s adequate creativity, melody, hook, and variation to make the songs both intriguing and entertaining.

Clearly a band that loves to play their music loud, Vanisher is a five-piece metal crew from Ridgeway, Virginia.

Unbound is the band’s 2012 debut release featuring their resident wailing vocals, double bass kick drums and some really sweet guitar riffs.

Fans of the band since their first (and short) EP, Buried Alone, will certainly enjoy this one. Showcasing tighter performances and generally more polished tracks, it seems the band is poised to take their place in mainstream rock metal’s history.

Vanisher might not be a household name just yet but these guys have already mastered balancing melody with the insanity of metal. Coupled with emotive lyrics, the boys end up creating a sound that takes most metal bands years to get right.

Unbound is filled with catchy cuts from start to finish, each one resonates with riffs you could taste. Deceiver, for instance, is a track that has all the qualities of radio ready metal song. Opening with a wailing guitars, to rolling drums and great vocal work, listeners are in for a good ride. Cuts like, Seven Years Buried, and, Blood Red Sky, also stand out in an album that’s beaming pure metal goodness.

When you listen to the record, you’ll recognize how each instrument and part actually contribute to create a strong track. No one is hogging the spotlight plus, coupled with solid compositions, each cut becomes a standout on its own. Mainstream metal lovers won’t have trouble enjoying this one.

The best part is that all this sweet mayhem is available at a name-your-price option at their BandCamp. Take a break from your dreary work and enjoy some good old rock metal from Vanisher.

There are times when you simply want to take out your music player and listen to the loudest record you have on there. GhostMouth EP from Tyrants would make good company for these kinds of afternoon.

The London, hardcore four-piece released this mini compilation back in 2011. It served as a follow-up to their self-titled debut released earlier that same year.

GhostMouth EP showcases some raw and energy-driven orgy of guitars, drums and shouting vocals that the band has pretty much gotten down to a tee.

It’s quite rare for a hardcore metal band to grace the pages of the blog so thought I’d fill in the gap by introducing, Tyrants. This crew knows how to get loud, with deafening levels of growling, drums and guitars.

The EP is short, with only four tracks but the jolt of energy is perfect for waking you up and out of a sleepy bed. Starting with the barely two minute single, Fading Light; the track marches with garbled vocals, heavy distorted guitars and fast paced drumming. Meanwhile, Conscript, isn’t even a proper song at it only runs for less than a minute. Again, filled with nothing but loud shouting and good tempo. Title track, Ghostmouth and Dead Never Speak, complete the loud record.

Even though the EP isn’t perfect and feels that it still needs a bit of polishing in certain areas, it is good for momentary hardcore rock cravings. Tyrants is a band that knows how to knock your socks off in terms of volume and decibel. Perhaps in their next offerings, they’ll fine tune their compositions and create tighter sets, improving their sound as they go. Take a listen and see if you like it.

Metal punk group, All Else Fails is a four piece crew that hails from Toronto, Canada. Handing out their latest energy-filled album absolutely free, the band is making sure that their fans get only the best.

Ruins Punk for Everyone is a cover album that sees the band taking 9 of their favorite tracks and performing it their own way. This is the third release for the band, their first album, Against the Darkening Sky was released back in 2009. Their follow-up record, The Oracle , What Was, Is, and Could Have Been, came two years after. Both albums are available for purchase at BandCamp.

There are a bunch of recognizable tracks on here. One of the more prominent ones is Dig Up Her Bones, originally from punk rock band,Misfits. The boys do give it their best shot; performing a track that most punk rock lovers will recognize from the getgo. Apart from the deeper vocals, the rest of the cut still has that classic Misfits vibe.

There’s also the catchy, I Don’t Wanna Be Me, originally performed by another prominent band, Type O Negative. This Brooklyn band gained a huge following and has released more than 7 studio albums. The final track is a bit of a surprise, it’s a cover of John Anderson’s Seminole Wind. Of course, the band adds their punk rock touch to the song; creating an upbeat number that much of the younger generation can appreciate.

Overall, this is a nice record to check out. Perfect for just blasting on while you enjoy your day. It’s absolutely free too so go ahead and grab the download.

It’s a loud and biting record that showcases frontwoman Kimberly Freeman’s cold, at times sweet vocals. Doused in a gloomy, dark atmosphere, it brings solid metal, punk and even a bit of blues rock in tow.

Thanks to this combination, the band expertly delivers tracks that are catchy, melodic and can easily grab your attention.

A classic lineup for One-Eye Doll involves an uber-talented lady (Kimberly Freeman) and extraordinary producer, Jason Rufus (Sewell or “Junior.”) Both members have been embroiled in the music business even before they teamed up. Kim has had over 8 albums under her name while Jason, is a prominent producer in Austin; creating jingles, soundtracks or music for video games, other bands etc.

Dirty is the duo’s latest compilation. Kickstarting the heavy and melodic record is, Plumes of Death. It’s a hard-hitting track that resonates with distorted guitars and Kim’s wailing yet sweet vocals. A track that hooks you after one or two listens, you end up anticipating the energy that comes with it when you put it on playback. Envy is another track that brings in the big guns while cuts like Liar and Lonely; entertain a more quiet, sometimes blues feel.

Kim’s voice is equally comfortable whether she’s thundering through a rock track or maybe quietly and seductively singing into the crowd. Meanwhile, Jason easily backs her up and gives a solid platform as she plays guitars and sings her heart out. It’s a beautiful combination, really.

Much of the songs on here are old tracks they’ve recently recorded while a couple are completely new ones. Dirty, overall, is a record that’ll introduce you to an unconventional underground metal band that should be on your radar. They have the energy and the passion to stay true to their craft and deliver tracks that resonate with just the right amount of everything. Ultimately each track is made to make listeners feel good as well as rock hard. Don’t miss this one.

Okay, Cloudkicker officially has my vote for being one of the sickest metal bands offering music for free online. Even more impressive perhaps is the fact that there’s only one guy manning all the luscious mayhem you hear when you hit the play button.

Ben Sharp, aka Cloudkicker, has been winning praises and reviews from artists and enthusiasts everywhere thanks to his consistent, enjoyable and innovative sound.

Beacons is his second album and was released a couple of years ago in 2010. Featuring 10 loud instrumental progressive rock tracks, you’ll find the record as a good distraction you’ll want to entertain for a long time.

Filled with drum machines and some heavy metal guitar loop, We Are Going To Invert… helps you grasp the pandemonium involved with this musician’s sound. Although there’s nothing really significant happening in the song, (it’s just a loop of instruments swash buckling for about five minutes) it delivers great energy and prepares listeners for what’s ahead.

The succeeding tracks, Here, Wait a Minute! Damn it! and We’re Going in, We’re Going Down, help shape the instrumental landscape Cloudkicker skillfully paints. The latter is particularly a personal favorite, as the artist enamors with his use of complex rhythms and interesting riffs.

You’ll find track after track of great metal composition when you listen to this one. The best part is that this music is offered for free. Of course, it would be much appreciated if you show your support to the artist by making a donation his way. After all, you’re getting such awesome tunes in return. It’s a pretty sweet deal if you ask me. Grab the download and enjoy.

The Brixton Robbers are an energetic punk ska band from Quebec, Canada. Adding a whole lot of rock attitude to their resident sound, the group comes in loud and proud; churning in one energetic performance after another.

Rocks & Crane is the band’s first full album. It’s a bit late as it was released back in 2009 and four years after the band initially got together. They weren’t sitting idle in those four years though. The band in fact played more than 200 songs in between, apart from creating/recording tracks to be used in the record.

From the onset, you’re greeted with loud shouty vocals and fast paced drums and bass with Bright Lights. At times the song sounds like it’s trying to decide whether to be a melodic hipster number or a straight out metal rock song. Despite the ambiguity, it’s a song that blasts away, providing listeners little reaction time until the song ends.

Most of the songs are the kind that sort of shout in your face and quickly make a run for it. Tracks like Pipe Bomb incorporate some nifty guitar riff in the middle portion while O Street, practically declares war with your ear drum. Half Awake provides a more evident ska sound thanks to the deftly played bass incorporated with the song.

Perhaps my favorite in the album though is their cover of The B-52′s Rock Lobster. It’s made more special thanks to that little snippet of Peter Griffin in the beginning. The metal rock vocals adds a nice touch to the single. Definitely one to listen to if you’re checking out this record.

In the end, Rocks & Cranes is for those looking for underground rock acts to add to their playlist. Personally, the more I listen to this album, the more I end up liking the songs. Some tracks I honestly don’t like as much but there’s more good than there is bad. If you don’t mind loud, fast thumping songs, this record should be worth looking into.

Looking for something loud to start the New Year? You should check out My Hear To Joy and their release, Seasons in Verse. This is the first full album for the group and so far things are looking promising.

The crew is a big one with seven people driving the band’s core. Together, these Kensington, CT natives create music that is a mix punk, metal and indie. Complete with short punchy rhythm and in-your-face rockin’ these guys know how to capture your attention and get their message across.

This album is a follow up to the EP they released last year, Virgins Sail, where the boys were decidedly more aggressive. This time around, they’re taking a loud yet more polished rock path with their sound.

Kickstarting everything with a two minute alternative rock instrumental called, Time Spent Breathing; the song gently sweeps and sways as it starts before building up to a rockish pitch. It perfectly sets the mood for the album and prepares the listeners for a loud and complicated 11 tracks to follow.

Title cut, Seasons in Verse, sounds like a half scream with strained vocals blurting out the lyrics. It features a catchy and intricate instrument work that goes from midtempo to fast rock within seconds. It’s this combination of hardcore and mellow/indie rock that helps the band gouge a niche for themselves.

Meanwhile, Goldheart Mountaintop Queen Directory is a cover track from Guided By Voices. One of those unexpected covers you normally wouldn’t associate with a group that had its beginnings in screamo. Finally, they finish off the album with a fitting cut, Watch Me Live. It’s epic, containing guitar swells, screaming raspy vocals, and a much louder Coldplay-esque vibe.

Personally, I really enjoyed this record. The complex network of instruments and the hodge podge of rock genres work great for the band. One of those albums you put on if you like to dissect the flesh of songs and not settle for the facade.

You can grab this one at a name-your-price option over at BandCamp. It might be two years old but this one still has everything you need for a rocking great time.

It’s a short 6 track compilation that’s offered for free.

They’ve gotten the opportunity to share the stage with artists like Capricorns, Torche and Lair Of The Minotaur to name a few. Close that door of yours, turn the volume up and start rockin’! This City’s Got Laws opens and welcome the listener to this record. This instrumental track features an awesome guitar riff and sets the stage for the rest of the loud tracks that follow next. On its heels is the Tool sounding, Felony Days. With its progressive feel, the cut is an easy love for most rockers out there. Although I’m particularly keen on the vocals for this one.

Meanwhile, title track, Fairy Crimes, is more my type of music. The cut starts out strong with heavy drumming and trashy guitars. It’s essentially pure mayhem for about three minutes or so with this song. Attract Drama, on the other hand, is another cool track in the compilation. I’m still not a fan of the vocal work but the cut packs enough punch to make it part of my playlist.

Since their inception, the band has released a demo back in 2004 and have gone through a lineup change. These new set of tracks serve as a comeback for the group. Moreover, they’re also hitting the stage again after a hiatus with new faces on board.
