Phil Fox: Midstreams

Eighteen year-old producer, Phil Fox, has compiled some of his best works and put together this cool electronic ambient compilation just for you. Filled with 8 tracks that flourish in hip hop electronic beats as well as quiet sounds, the album features great flowing cuts that imbibe a smooth and relaxing atmosphere.

Although there’s not much about him out there; on his short profile bio on SoundCloud he states that his “setup consists of Reason, my Axiom 49 controller, 2 M-Audio BX5 sound monitors, and hopefully soon, Ableton Live.” He adds that he likes creating “instrumentals, from Underground Hip-Hop, Trap, Electronic, mellow cloud-type music, and a bunch of songs I make as a joke.”

Even though he might make some of these as a joke, there’s no doubt it involves some great skill on his part. Starting off with Seabears, the track is filled with a relaxing ambient mix completed by weird twinkling sounds. Both of these coalesce to form the 1 minute opener.

Dat T-Hal Flow, follows next and it integrates a bit more hip hop into the electronic ensemble. FNKADLC continues the hip hop and retro sound while Aquarium and Mondegreen blend in a bit of trip-hop and slow vibes into the compilation. The rest of the tracks add their own flavor to the record, expanding it and adding a rich diversity. Midstreams end with Haunted House, a rather quiet single filled with piano work and deep, ominous vibe.

Overall, the album is pretty good. Each track is different and peels back the curtains on what this young producer/DJ can do. Take a listen, you might like this one.

B. Eure III: A Mind’s Canvas

B. Eure III or Bernard Eure III definitely knows how to create cool, laid back beats; the kind you can play on a quiet Saturday night while chillin’ with your friends.

A Mind’s Canvas is the first album from this Virginia based artist. He doesn’t waste anybody’s time and right from the start showcases his penchant for catchy rhythm and great rhymes.

According to the artist, “this album is a self produced project I dedicate to the ever presence lesson of life, love and the struggle to balance it all. A mind is truly a canvas because what we see and experience constitutes the images and beliefs engraved in it.” �

It’s not everyday you get a spectacular mini EP that impresses from beginning to end, A Mind’s Canvas is one of those rare moments and it’s filled with special tracks that are hard to ignore.

My Life, opens up the compilation and starts it strong. Expect to end up tapping your feet or doing a little sway with your head as you listen to this track. It’s cool and catchy and guaranteed to leave you with a dose of last-song-syndrome. Right up next is The Verge, featuring a smoother beat, B. Eure’s vocals starts to really shine. The groove is nice and it’s just smooth throughout.

Meanwhile, If I Had a Dollar and Others fill the tracks in between and each song has its own personality. Crash, beautifully closes the record in style as it sways with beautiful grooves and B. Eure’s gorgeous pipes.

Overall, there’s only 5 tracks on this record but if you love soul then it’s almost guaranteed you’re going to love the entire set. Hopefully there’s more to come from this talented singer/producer. It’ll be something to look forward to that’s for sure. Grab the download for the meantime. Enjoy!

Dwight Anderson: All of Me

Toronto native, Dwight Anderson is one of those people where performing and singing has come naturally. At 6 years old, the singer was already impressing audiences at his church. By adolescence, he took his passion further by joining talent shows and recording personal demos.

Fast forward today and the singer has already recorded and released his debut compilation. All of Me, gave the singer a solid foot inside the music world. With his soulful vocals and simple yet catchy R&B rhythms, the songs he creates are instantly likable. Perfect for singing along to and simply chilling in.

Most of the songs on here are a couple of years old but it’s still quite a find. His first big hit, Oh No, gained the singer a solid radio airplay. It’s a slow and smooth R&B style cut that highlights great harmonies and the singer’s beautiful vocals. He didn’t stop there, it was followed by other hits like So Beautiful and Holdin’ On, which is also included in this compilation.

Currently, the singer is working more behind the scenes. He’s credited as penning tunes for various artists including Canadian Idol runner-up, Gary Beals. One of the tracks he wrote for the singer actually earned the young newcomer a Best in R&B/Soul Juno nomination.

Citing Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, Jodeci and Boyz II Men among his many influences, it’s not hard to see this reflected in his music. There’s a nice old-school touch to most of his songs that make it instantly ‘groove-able’ even on first listen.

Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed this one. One of the best R&B records I’ve come across for this year. The best part is that this one is offered for free download, so go check it out. Enjoy!

Ill Poetic Presents: Joe Budden Meets Portishead “Mood Muzik’s Third” REMASTERED

Initially released back in 2008, Mood Muzik 3 was a mash-up compilation between Joe Budden�s project as well Portishead�s current and old music. By 2010, the people behind the scenes decided to remaster the record to coincide with Joe Budden�s Mood Muzik 4 album.

This time around though, the tracks are more polished and they�ve snuck in a bonus cut for the fans. Although the whole mash-up thing has died down, this is still a great find if you�re fans of either Joe Budden or Portishead.

For the unfamiliar, here�s a little background for both artists in the mashup. Joe Budden is an American rapper from Jersey. He’s a solo artist but is also a part of hip hop crew, Slaughterhouse. Initially signed onto Def Jam, he eventually left for personal reasons. Despite the drawback, he took this freedom and created his own compilation and mixtapes.

Meanwhile, Portishead probably needs no introduction. They�re one of the bands that spearheaded trip-hop music back in the early 90s. Fronted by the Beth Gibbons, their sound is both mesmerizing and experimental. The band were on tour as recent as 2011 even though they went on hiatus for awhile, they eventually decided to perform again as a band.

This remastered mash-up brings two of these opposing forces together to compose a sonically interesting result. Several tracks that capture the mash-up essence perfectly are Warfare, opening cut, Hiatus; and Thou Shall Not Fall.

Overall, it�s a nice little combo if you want to be a bit experimental with your playlist. Mash-ups may no longer be en-vouge but this one is worth the listen. Check it out.

Ain’t No Love, an electro hiphop quartet join forces to issue some body moving and edgy music in their self-titled EP.

The Specktators: About That Life

After their hit albums Familiar With Floss and The Sunroom, The Specktators graces the FrostClick scene with another sumptuous collection in About That Life.

Formed in 2009, The Specktators is a two-man hip hop crew consisting of brothers Matt Duda (Moe-T) and Patrick Duda (Packi). Their music can be described as a blend of hip hop and electronic music with hints of other genres such as r&b, pop, and dance.

About That Life, released last October 2012, is a tightly-packed collection boasting with 13 songs oozing with great taste and a high level of musicality. After a compelling intro, Off the Leash sets the stage for some clean rapping set in an orgasmic background of steady beats and layered vocals.

Slow and sensual, Fever strengthens The Specktators‘ lyricism with an expansive vocabulary and poetic style. These integral elements combined with some smoking hot arrangement makes this a must-hear.

Nothing Like You feat. Miramage incorporates a healthy dose of electronic music and r&b vocals. The spacey atmosphere and smooth sailing lines will surely channel some chill vibes. While Breaking Point makes use of quirky piano tunes, creating a bubbly piece that’s really catchy to the ears.

All in all, The Specktators have concocted another strong release that will make a stronger core following.

The Grammar Club: Bioavailable

The best is yet to come for The Grammar Club, an alternative hiphop collective group that’s comprised of rotating musicians with different styles, creating albums that are distinct with one another.

Lead by Beefy and Shae Riley, Bioavailableis a seven-track collection that features a great lineup of guest vocalists such as Adam Warrock, Wheelie Cyberman, Jesse Dangerously, MC Frontalot, Wordburglar, and Kabuto the Phyton. The album was produced by Shae Riley and Ty Guenley.

Minutes within the album and you’ll immediately see why The Grammar Club has attracted a lot of attention in the indie scene. The collective attempts to combine mainstream pop and hiphop, producing a funky-ish upbeat rapping evident in the opening track Plastic Submarine.

Making room for experimentation, Sex Person featuring Wordburglar kicks it hard with danceable beats and clean lines. The chorus vibrates a steady energy that’s perfect for steady partying.

Boasting the same sass as the previous track, Get Laid is an easy-listening piece that makes use of evocative guitars and crisp notes. Last Good Day wraps the album with alternative pop stylings and moderate tempo. Riley’s smooth vocals blends well with Wheelie Cyberman‘s precise rapping.

Ten Million Sounds: Finding Time

With the amount of electronic musicians out there, it’s hard to find really good quality ones. Luckily, Finding Time by Ten Million Sounds has made everything easier by compiling the best electro/ambient music around.

Finding Time by Ten Million Sounds

Featuring 13 ambient, electronic and downtempo beats; Finding Time serves as the second compilation from Ten Million Sounds and is meant to take listeners through a relaxing stroll. According to their liner notes, it’s curated “for the most peaceful hours of the day, these thirteen tracks will take you from late night into the early morning sunrise, connecting atmospheric beats with a love for our natural environment.”

True to their word, the album is comprised of nothing but the most melodic and relaxing electronic downtempo hip hop to grace your ears. A track from Aether titled Solace, opens up the soothing compilation. Composed of a steady, relaxing beat coupled with the occasional vocal sample; the track liberates and calms the nerves on an edgy day.

Jimmy Whoo’s Star Child adds a bit of funk and soul to the compilation. Combining a nice bassline beat along with smooth jazz and soul touches, it’s one of those tracks you groove along to on a quiet Saturday night. Rob Viktum’s 4/17/1975 is another lovely single that’s definitely worth noting.

Truth be told, this is one of the few electronic compilations that has gotten me very excited. It’s a record composed of cool, chill out ambient tracks that are so relaxing it seeps through your bones. Filled with an equal portion of hip hop and electronica aesthetics, it’s the best of both worlds. The best part is that you can get this at a free/pay-what-you-want-download. All proceeds will be donated to a non-profit organization called Smile Train. The organization helps provide funding for corrective cleft palate surgery for children.

Experience that right kind of high in murk daddy flex‘s third compilation album. Packed with a hefty set of 19 tracks, the Athens, GA-based artist treats us with chill hip-hop beats.

With musical influences like Nujabes, A Tribe Called Quest, and Modest Mouse, murk daddy flex’s music plays in the realm of hip-hop and instrumental with evidences of hydrogen drum machine.

An easy listen while driving, Interstate 88 opens the album with a steady flowing beat. Kodana and Evening Song fall on the hypnotic, drifting sonic style added with a kick of soul. The altered echoing vocals in the aforementioned tracks give edge and variety to the album.

Kadream opens with this line, “Dancing, music, champagne–the best way to forget and to define something you want to remember.” This experimental track infuses classical disney-ish music with slow�rhythmic�beats, crafting a unique track that’s perfect for late night dinners.

A personal favorite, Lucky Cards is an elegant arrangement of jazz-influenced tunes that lets the listeners absorb the music and draw them closer as the beats spins in their ears.

Wrapping up is porgy, an eargasmic instrumental piece that makes use of repetitive sounds, quirky piano play-ups, and a handful of drum machines.

Listening to murk daddy flex’s third compilation reminds you of lounge music that’s chill but still carries a certain kind of energy that doesn’t make you doze off. The album is available as a pay-what-you-want/free download on bandcamp.
