Underground Japanese Rock that makes you wish you were turning Japanese... I really think so... Although it might not be everybody's cup of tea, Japanese rock, punk and rock never got any better. Plan X From The Eastern Dark is a compilation album that showcases some of the best underground deathrock, punk and rockabilly acts waving their banner all the way from the land of the rising sun.

If you've never tried your hand at anything else Japanese apart from sushi, then take a stab at listening to this one. You might not get most of what they're saying, but it's a good listen especially if you're into the genre.

shapeimage_5Okay, for a moment, I want you to stop thinking of music as entertainment, and stop thinking of musicians as being the ones fully responsible for bringing their music to you and spoon-feeding you its meaning.

Instead, just for a short while, consider the process of making music more as a collaborative effort, where you and the musician share equal obligation in the end result. This halfway point is exactly where Zhang Liming will meet you, and the location will look different every time you go there.

shapeimage_5I live in Asia Minor, and when I first heard the melancholy and mysterious strains of Christian "Kiane" Fromentin's Ispahan, my first thought was that this guy must be making music in my local area.

I was surprised to find out that he's actually in France - he just has a very innate sense of what the region of the Near and Middle East sounds like, and a talent for evoking nostalgia... even for listeners who have never been to this part of the world.

shapeimage_5People often ask me how many languages I speak, simply because my music collection holds so many international artists who don't sing in English. But to tell the truth, I don't require a song to be sung in a language I understand, in order for me to be able to connect with it.

If you never thought you could get into music in any language other than English, I urge you to give Anabase's Le Bonheur Flou a try.
