If we would have been distributing our promotions still on CDs and lined them up by the shorter end side by side, we would need 162 miles [or 260 kilometers] of road to do so!!!

FrostWire Creative Commons Mixtape Volume 3 Side B is a selection of Creative Commons licensed tracks from some of our favorite albums reviewed on FrostClick.
Working with all of our promo artists has been a true pleasure and a lesson in determination and will to succeed. Most of them are truly independent, working solo to write, record & promote their music. It takes a special type of a person to pierce through the millions of wanna-bes & be noticed in todays music business. We think that the artists we’ve promoted are truly on a verge of making it big! And that doesn’t mean getting “signed” any more [although a few of them already did..] – that means having millions of fans around the world who will be there sharing the heck out of their creative commons licensed music, contributing big to their Kickstarter campaigns for new albums, buying their limited edition signed merchandise and coming to their concerts.

For more awesome music out our last year’s compilation & follow us on Facebook and Twitter!

We’ve been reviewing free music downloads for you since 2008. We think we’ve been doing a pretty good job curating the content we present to you every day. Nonetheless, we recognize that the Internet is a wide universe of content no one very small team can effectively canvas. If you think you know an artist that’s worth reviewing/promoting, pls write to us at kademlia or natalie @frostwire.com. Just remember the download needs to be free and preferably under a Creative Commons license so it’s absolutely clear the artist wants us all to share their work.

Thanks to all and happy sharing in 2013!!

Originating from 1230 AD, the Carmina Burana is a set of medieval manuscripts consisting of 254 poems and dramatic text. It was an epic piece of text that was created by theological students mainly to satirize the church. Most of the works centered on subjects such as wealth, the nature of life, financial abuses, joy of Springtime and even the pleasure and perils of drinking.

The Carmina Burata was translated into an beautiful cantata by German composer, Carl Orff in 1937. The composer's version of the Carmina is now available as a free download right on FMA. Performed by none other than the MIT Orchestra under the direction of Dr. William Cutter (2006.)

The Carmina Burana was translated into a beautiful cantata by German composer, Carl Orff in 1937. The composer’s version of the Carmina is now available as a free download right on FMA. Performed by none other than the MIT Choir under the direction of Dr. William Cutter (2006).

This is a great piece of classical/medieval music brought to life in these modern times.

The album itself might be tough to digest for people who aren’t really keen on classical cantatas. However, it’s quite a treat for those who enjoy this type of musical exercise.

Opening with “O Fortuna,” you might be surprised at just how familiar this piece is. Even if you might not be a fan, listening to this actually brings back nostalgic moments. It’s one of those tracks that gets overly played in epic battle scenes in several Hollywood films. The song has been used in hundreds of movies and television shows, a few of which include 300, Jackass, and The Lord of the Rings.

Omnia Sol Temperat and Olim Lacus Colueram are only two of the more melodic pieces. The latter being an aria that has to be sung in falsetto to express the singer’s suffering. It’s a lovely, very expressive piece that captures the cynicism and despair of the character.

According to the concert program notes, “Carl Orff’s principal aim evident in Carmina Burana has been a “total theatre” where music, words and movement (this piece is often choreographed) work together in producing an overwhelming effect. He sought models of such a work in two cultural traditions: classical Greek tragedy and Italian Baroque musical theatre.”

People who might not like classical pieces might still find something special in this record. If this MIT version is a bit too classical for your taste, there’s a more rock and roll version done by Dr. Phibes and the Ten Plagues which features several movements from Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana as well.

A little bit of bossanova, electro-acoustic sounds, electropop delight, some disco/jazz influence and great vocals in all the right places; What Is All About is certainly a melting pot for your senses.

Released in 2010 by Johnwaynes album (made available for a download by the Optimus Discos Label), brings us five excellent tracks ready to bright up your day with their light and chill out sounds that will not be quickly forgotten.

Johnwaynes have been around for a while now. They have been performing and producing new gorgeous melodies since 2005, and it seems that the end is nowhere in sight.

What Is All About is one of over 15 records that the band has released over the years, yet it’s mix of vocals and wide range of musical influences sets it wide apart from the rest of mostly instrumental, minimalistic acid house classics the fans are use to hear.
The album starts off with one of my favorites cuts, The One. This part electronic, pop, jazzy tune is filled with mood lifting, playful melodies and hypnotizing female vocals (which for some unexplained reason made me start thinking of Morcheeba); add to it the lovely music video, which you can watch below, and you have yourself a clear winner.

But aside from The One, the album comes with a number of other great tracks. What Is All About starts off with a tropical beats, progressing into a jazz piano bits, and amazing lyrics combined with vocals that on some level make me feel like I should be watching an old Hollywood classic. The last track, Mindbreaker, on the other hand, is a more disco influenced piece which starts off with a lovely piano solo and more chilled electronic additions.

The greatest strength of What Is All About is certainly it’s diversity of sounds; it’s unique combination of different genres, electronic beats and instrumental work. And it’s quality production only adds to the positives. So go ahead, click download, and give this one a go.

Gepel is a jazz trio from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Founded in 2006 they released their first album, Moducué (meaning ‘thanks’ in Lucumí, a Yoruba dialect), the very same year. The album, which came out under the wings of the Dharmasound Netlabel, is a collection of six wonderful tracks, each showcasing the great musical talents of its members.

So if you are in the mood for original compositions with some excellent deep sounds of bass, heart piercing percussion, and rich piano – Gepel is definitely for you!

There has to be something special about a band that makes you feel like you are listening to their live performance somewhere in a low lit shadows of a true jazz club even when what you are really doing is as mundane as running errands around town. It seems, however, that Gepel is good in making just that happen.

Moducué is a collection of original tracks from which each one is dedicated to a specific yet popular music ‘language’ from Latin America. All of those distinctive sounds, however, are tied exceptionally well within the traditional (or rather traditional North American) texture of jazz.
All in all I did not come across even one weak composition, and although there is always a track highlighting the outstanding abilities of a band’s member, all of the 30 minutes from the recording showcase just how well those ‘abilities’ work together.

Moducué might be Gepel’s first release, but it certainly is not the last. In 2010, the band made their second, and equally amazing album, Kuska, available for a download to its fans. So let’s hope there is still more to come in the future!

A wonderful fusion of rock, funk, folk, jazz, brass with some great sounding guitar, percussion, violin, viola, keyboards, trumpet, sax, bagpipes!?, and yes, even harmonica. It seems that Rei Teytum have it all, except of course for an English version of their bio anywhere on the Internet.
So it is times like this that I wish I spoke more languages to bring you important information about the artists. But since that will simply not happen lets focus on their fantastic album, “Viajeros” (“Travelers”), and the tiny bits of band history I was able to get (courtesy of my friend Google Translate).

“Viajeros” got my attention for one main reason – it is filled with a variety of music styles that, well, seemed to fit perfectly together. From the trumpet, drums and percussion that all of the sudden, in the middle of the song, make you feel like you are listening to jazz only to be followed by a harmonica solo, which than gets back to great rock sound and vocals (No Va!). Or the sound of bagpipes that just for a second makes you forget you are listening to an Argentinian band instead of roaming of the streets of Scotland (Viajeros). And than you have some amazing electric guitar solo among a jazz trumpet in Una Inquietud. Plus how can you not love the sound of violin in the background of many of the tracks.

The band:
Manu Gil (voice, guitar, harmonica)
Andrés “Pitu†Minvielle (bass)
Fran Garriga (keyboard)
Seba Minvielle (drums)
Julián “Tatum†Cueto (bagpipes)
Pablo Fittipaldi (violin and viola)

Guest musicians:
Santi Navamuel (percussion)
Estani Masigoge (percussion)
Guille Vera (sax)
Juano Arteta (trumpet)

The band was born in City Bell province of Buenos Aires, Argentina in April 2006 when Manu Gil, Fran Garriga and Seba Minvielle came together in order to pursue their own musical dream. After some time Julian “Tatum” Cueto joined the band and together recorded the first demo; a fusion of different instruments and genres ranging from rock, funk, ethnic, and folk. Following the release the band got the opportunity to perform in the many great venues of La Plata and Buenos Aires. As the number of performances grew so did the visiting guest musicians from which Pablo Fitipaldi became a permanent member.
In 2009, the band decided that it is time to record their first album titled “Viajeros” (“Travelersâ€), a task that was completed a year later. So why “Travelers”? According to the official bio the answer is pretty simple; the band wanted to find a ‘path to happiness’ so they ‘traveled’ through music.

Juanitos first showed up on our blog all the way back in June 2009. And now with more of great albums under its belt (including over 400 concerts and hundreds of thousands of downloads – if not more) I thought it might be a right time for a little re-introduction; especially that after our crazy winter I’m sure we are all in need of some ‘summer night party’ sounds.

Heading straight from Chamébry, France, the band is incorporating everything from latin soul, exotica, punk, rock’n'roll, reggae, acid jazz, surf rock, and funk into its spontaneous and “100% good vibes” musical collection.

Moreover, as the artists are constantly on the lookout for new tones to add to the mix, each release brings something fresh to the table. This time Soul Africa, the most recent album (2010), brings us a wonderful touch of soul/r&b, hip-hop, reggeae/dub, and afrobeat; a more balanced mix of genres with the same intensity and “maximum of groove”.

Juanitos came together nearly 20 years ago!! when four of its original members got together during a so-called punk garage movement. Greatly influenced by the legendary compilation of Crypt Records – Jungle Exotica, the band quickly set off to explore the more exotic face of rock’n'roll. In 1990s this exploration took them to the music scenes all around France. They sailed away for their first and very own tour which included 35 concerts, performed during some of the biggest festivals (Bourges, Trans, Turin Biennale), and played with stars such as Dionysus, Small Sins, and Louis Armstrong.

For a long time now Juanitos have been releasing their newest music under a Creative Commons license; five of their latest albums (Soul Africa, Best of, Best of Vol. 2, I’m Your DJ, Exotica) can be all found on jamendo.com. More recently the group’s album Exotic has been featured on Oddio Overplay, and a song Hola Hola Bossa Nova has been placed among selected few on BlocSonic’s NetBloc Vol.24 compilation.

Some time ago Intrahealth International released a special remix in honor of World Malaria Day. The project was put together by rapper Mopreme Shakur, brother of the late Tupac, and soon included ten tracks all being a remix of Youssou N’Dour’s song “Wake up – It’s Africa Calling”. The purpose of the project was to address the most critical health issues in Africa by bringing greater awareness of and support for open source training/development for health workers across the continent.

In 2004 the Rolling Stone magazine described Youssou N’Dour, singer, songwriter, and composer, as “the most famous singer alive” in Senegal and much of Africa. His music, a mix of traditional Senegalese mbalax with eclectic influences ranging from Cuban salsa to hip hop, jazz, and soul has won him an international fan base of millions and some great collaborative projects with musicians as Peter Gabriel, Sting, Wyclef Jean, Bruce Springsteen, Tracy Chapman, Branford Marsalis and many others. In 2009, N’Dour released his new song “Wake up (It’s Africa Calling)” under the Creative Commons License in order to help IntraHealth International in their upcoming campaign.
The song, remixed by artists such as Nas, Peter Buck of R.E.M, and Duncan Sheik, was soon released as a free download across all major distribution partners.

Although the remix was made available for download nearly 2 years ago it wasn’t until today that I stumbled upon it on the internet for the first time. So for all of you that still didn’t get a chance to download some of the tracks, here it is – a great sound and a great example of just how much open source can change the world.

Change the Way People Think about Health, Technology and the Developing World. IntraHealth OPEN is an initiative aimed at building technological fluency and local innovation in open source systems for health in Africa. With growing broadband connectivity and mobile phone use increasing at twice the global rate, Africa is taking advantage of cutting edge technologies in eHealth. Open source technology (where the code is openly available and able to be modified or expanded by the local developer/user) is ideally suited for application in low-resource environments, being free of licensing and upgrade fees, versatile and collaboration-friendly. With targeted training and support, open source solutions can enable African developers and health professionals to create, customize and grow systems themselves based on local expertise, needs and realities.

I fell in love with the series nearly two years ago during one of my lovely commutes to work for one simple reason – it brings you the most amazing variety of music just in time when you can no longer listen to the same songs you had on your iPod since 2000. Each podcast comes with a theme and a selection of sounds (from nearly every genre imaginable, with a slightly greater love for alternative and indie rock) put together by some of the greatest DJs from Northwest.

KEXP began as a tiny 10-watt public radio station all the way back in 1972. Based in Seattle, its broadcasting license is owned by the University of Washington – the place where the album rock station started to gain its first base of loyal fans from across the university. In 1975, however, the station’s signal was boosted and for the first time KEXP was heard outside of the campus. Over the years the station have grown and became an influential cultural force spreading far beyond Seattle’s borders.
In 2008, Radio New York (91.5 FM WNYE) announced it’s partnership with 90.3 KEXP, which would bring KEXP’s independent music programming to New York every day for six hours increasing the number of listeners by additional 14 million.

Music That Matters is a weekly podcast series bringing DJ curated mixes of wonderfully eclectic full length songs, where many of the featured artists come from Pacific Northwest, New York, and around the world. As the series is already on its 237th podcast it makes the the decision of choosing one of them for a sample download here on our website that much more difficult – so lets just listen to its latest release Spring Released curated by DJ John Richards.

If there is one thing inherently distinguishable with this band, it’s that they are full of energy and this shows in each of their tracks. They have taken various influences from a wide array of genres, whether it be rock, Japanese music, Latin, ska, jazz or reggae.

Not only do the Sundayers create big sound, but they are also a big band. They contain a percussions department, a wind section, three singers and the necessary guitar and bass. Because of this, it’s not unusual to have a wild and frenetic energy circling their live performances. Essentially, the band has been likened to look like  a non-stop party once they hit the stage and having that amount of energy circling around talented and passionate individuals.

Cógelo! or “Take It!” is filled with 13 wildly upbeat tracks, all written and sung in Spanish. However, despite the language difference, most of the tracks are easily likable and dance along to. The diversity in the music and vocals is pleasant and will keep any listener interested. It’s basically the perfect album to play while on some trip to a Caribbean destination.

At just about every moment during this 10-track album, you’ll be waiting for the musicians to break into laughter, and they actually do at some points.

But Shaking Hands is not just a joke, it’s an infectious combination of calypso beats and lo-fi magic. Either you’ll get it or you won’t, but if you do, it’ll leave you wanting to go out and buy every island-themed album ever made.

Remember when you were 10 and you had that Casio keyboard that played automatic chords and rhythms when you played a single note? Imagine an entire album of that, with some guitar strumming added in for good measure. And if you think that sounds silly, wait until you hear the vocals – strangely vague affected island accents that are so ridiculous, they probably border on offensive. These guys claim to be from “Coco-Town, Cocos (Keeling) Islands,” but if you believe that, I have a bridge for sale. I think they may be located in Germany, although one of them appears to be Czech, and… wow, I don’t even know. The information on their web site is so bizarre, it’s difficult to know what is true and what isn’t. But I have to admit that the stuff they write, both in song and in description, is great fun. I’ve spent more time reading about them than I’d care to admit.

The rhythms of the respective tracks don’t offer a lot of variety, but the band makes up for that with tremendously catchy beats that will definitely make you want to move your hips. The song lyrics are a mixture of semi-serious and not serious at all; themes range from the traditional “I’m so lonely without her” all the way over to “if loving my blood relatives is wrong, I don’t want to be right.” It makes me laugh just to think about it, and I think listeners will either get this kind of humor, or they won’t. Give it a try and see which category you fall into.
