It’s been awhile since we featured a balls-out hard rock band here on the blog, so here’s one record you can sink your teeth into.

The Blackfires – Live at The Cutting Room captures the essence of the band’s sound. From wild riffs, impressive wailing vocals and crashing cymbals, the tracks from this mini session will resonate deep and hard for many fans of 70s rock and roll.

This New York outfit are fairly new in the scene but they’re already cooking up quite a storm in various underground rock/metal circuits. And once you hear them, it’s pretty easy to understand why people are buzzing.

It’s rare to see a rock band so expertly showcase their various influences without losing their own voice or sound in the process. However, The Black Fires make this feat look quite easy. Their music, for the most part, is a throwback to the era of Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple etc., but yet they manage to retain their modern voice amidst the concoction.

There’s only 5 tracks on here but it’s enough to give you a good picture of what you’re in for, in case you get to see the band live.

Energetic opener, Rocker Child, plays with traditional rock riffs and would certainly kickstart a good concert. Thanks to his powerful voice, frontman Cheggi, easily sways listeners while still keeping up with the instruments.

Livewire Babies is perhaps one of the most solid tracks on the record. Although almost all the cuts are likable, this one has great potential as a single. The guitar work is beautiful on this one so make sure to check it out.

The Blackfires is certainly a band to watch out for. Essentially, there are bands who cover 70s rock faithfully and then there’s this band. They take it a step further by using their love for the decade while ensuring their personality still stands out. As a result, they create a great balance between old school and modern that’s hard to pull off.

Track List:
1. Rocker Child 04:16
2. Gambit 05:16
3. Livewire Babies 06:31
4. Just a Thrill 04:58
5. Primal Love 07:26

Frozen Flowers is Fenrirs second album (2009) following up Whispers of the Old World which was released last 2007. Comparing the two, you would hear the difference in terms of sound quality which was dramatically improved and Celtic-Metal fans would surely not be disappointed with the several guitar highlights all throughout the compilation.

The Wanderer immediately sets up the album standard with haunting vocals, evocative lyrics and excellent interplay of instrumental lines. The White Dear radiates lovely melodies accompanied by outstanding singing that emphasizes the lead vocals ability to keep up with the tempo and still be able to project her soprano voice over the energetic guitars and drums.

Metal Jig, on the other hand, is a subtle fusion of modern rock and classic Celtic music which stays true to its title: easy-to-listen music with the influence of heavy instrumental playing. Dawn of God brings life to every riffs, beats and lyrics and lets it shine brightly like the sun.

Frozen Flowers is a very good composition that has very distinct melodic lines which are influenced by their Celtic inspiration. Their ideas are quite novel and brilliant, bringing together the elements of classic and modern music genres together. Fenrir clearly made their latest compilation very impressive and will surely win a lot of listeners and fans in no time.

A mishmash of goth, emo, symphonic, metal, and ballad, Rachel Macwhirter is Evanescence in disguise.

Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, her primary instrument is vocals. She also plays the piano though not with a great deal of expertise which really isnt an issue because of her great talent in singing. Graduating from a university with a degree in applied music majoring in composition, expect deep and thought provoking lyrics out of this nineteen year old singer.

Hey Alice pummels through with Macwhirters pretty voice which is very emotional in its purest sense. It is ripe with romantically longing tunes with a mixture of gorgeous power ballad.

Iron Children builds up slow, with twinkling piano and classical strings wrestling with burly riffs that eventually catches up with the well timed percussion beats. Mockingjay simply presents to us Macwhirters phenomenal ability in singing by minimizing instruments and focusing on the singers music.

A Thousand Angels dissects the fine line between love and hate through ethereal orchestral accents and alluring piano tones. Finally, Nightingale sets the harmonious brick that was already laid from the beginning, adding textures, tones, and emotions and letting it flourish through the end.

This is Rachel Macwhirters first album and it came out to be good. Expect something more from her in the few years to come.

Judging from the band’s name itself, Fear Report, you could already get a glimpse of what kind of music they have to offer. Fear Report is honest, straightforward, emotional and most of all delivers a 90s rock feel that is rare in today’s scene and genre.

Their unique sound comes mainly from their diverse musical influences. From post-hardcore to metal edge to grunge to indie and alternative, this is what Fear Report is. Your ordinary five man rock band but has always something new to bring to the table.

Pandemic is a thirteen track album that tells a different story with each song. It hits home in so many ways that it’s so hard to nail down just one.

Viral takes on the struggles of life that went mayhem and spun out of control. Rear View Mind tells us the important lesson of not being able to move forward if you always look back and let your past affect your future.

The Front Line is a straight up fitting song to show support to the troops risking their lives for their country. Paper Wings and a Handgun is a transcending emotional song that asks you the question “what have you done in your life and is it good enough?”

Thre things that really stood up are the immense rhythm section which is both precise and relentless, the guitar work which offers massive riffage in chord arrangements, lastly the depth of the song arrangement. While the songs are cast in a heavy motif, there’s adequate creativity, melody, hook, and variation to make the songs both intriguing and entertaining.

Clearly a band that loves to play their music loud, Vanisher is a five-piece metal crew from Ridgeway, Virginia.

Unbound is the band’s 2012 debut release featuring their resident wailing vocals, double bass kick drums and some really sweet guitar riffs.

Fans of the band since their first (and short) EP, Buried Alone, will certainly enjoy this one. Showcasing tighter performances and generally more polished tracks, it seems the band is poised to take their place in mainstream rock metal’s history.

Vanisher might not be a household name just yet but these guys have already mastered balancing melody with the insanity of metal. Coupled with emotive lyrics, the boys end up creating a sound that takes most metal bands years to get right.

Unbound is filled with catchy cuts from start to finish, each one resonates with riffs you could taste. Deceiver, for instance, is a track that has all the qualities of radio ready metal song. Opening with a wailing guitars, to rolling drums and great vocal work, listeners are in for a good ride. Cuts like, Seven Years Buried, and, Blood Red Sky, also stand out in an album that’s beaming pure metal goodness.

When you listen to the record, you’ll recognize how each instrument and part actually contribute to create a strong track. No one is hogging the spotlight plus, coupled with solid compositions, each cut becomes a standout on its own. Mainstream metal lovers won’t have trouble enjoying this one.

The best part is that all this sweet mayhem is available at a name-your-price option at their BandCamp. Take a break from your dreary work and enjoy some good old rock metal from Vanisher.

Recorded in vintage gear, One-Eye Doll’s record, Dirty is as gritty, loud and special just like any vintage instrument.

It’s a loud and biting record that showcases frontwoman Kimberly Freeman’s cold, at times sweet vocals. Doused in a gloomy, dark atmosphere, it brings solid metal, punk and even a bit of blues rock in tow.

Thanks to this combination, the band expertly delivers tracks that are catchy, melodic and can easily grab your attention.

A classic lineup for One-Eye Doll involves an uber-talented lady (Kimberly Freeman) and extraordinary producer, Jason Rufus (Sewell or “Junior.”) Both members have been embroiled in the music business even before they teamed up. Kim has had over 8 albums under her name while Jason, is a prominent producer in Austin; creating jingles, soundtracks or music for video games, other bands etc.

Dirty is the duo’s latest compilation. Kickstarting the heavy and melodic record is, Plumes of Death. It’s a hard-hitting track that resonates with distorted guitars and Kim’s wailing yet sweet vocals. A track that hooks you after one or two listens, you end up anticipating the energy that comes with it when you put it on playback. Envy is another track that brings in the big guns while cuts like Liar and Lonely; entertain a more quiet, sometimes blues feel.

Kim’s voice is equally comfortable whether she’s thundering through a rock track or maybe quietly and seductively singing into the crowd. Meanwhile, Jason easily backs her up and gives a solid platform as she plays guitars and sings her heart out. It’s a beautiful combination, really.

Much of the songs on here are old tracks they’ve recently recorded while a couple are completely new ones. Dirty, overall, is a record that’ll introduce you to an unconventional underground metal band that should be on your radar. They have the energy and the passion to stay true to their craft and deliver tracks that resonate with just the right amount of everything. Ultimately each track is made to make listeners feel good as well as rock hard. Don’t miss this one.

We all know or at least heard of Adult Swim as adult-oriented cable television that shares air time with Cartoon Network; not everyone, however, knows them for releasing some sweet free music.
As part of their more recent projects, Adult Swim has decided to put together a compilation, 8 singles over 8 weeks, that would blend together some great artists from genres as diverse as folk, pop, hip-hop, metal, and a touch of electronica.

The compilation is truly a mix of sounds and it is this diversity that makes it to stand out. With artists and musicians such as LCD Soundsystem, Cult, to Madvillain and Killer Mike, this treat from 2010 made some call Adult Swim “probably the best label that is not a label.”

Although not all of the tracks are the best in their field, there are certainly those that will make you want to turn up the speakers. With the fifth single by Black Lips bringing us a more rusty, lo-fi sound we are than quickly transported into the more electronica influenced pop cut Drunk Girls, remix by Holy Ghost, with just a touch of 80s mixed in between the beats. The compilation also comes to us with an enchanting song by Cults. Oh My God is filled with dreamy vocals and indie electronic pop sounds ready to take you to the clouds. Freddie Gibbs, an American rapper from Gary, Indiana, completes the circle with his bonus track On One; a rap/hip-hop single full of engaging computer generated beats and fast vocals.

Overall, taking aside that the compilation was brought to us as a part of Kia marketing, it is still an interesting little find. And considering that it is offered as a free download, you might as well give it a go. From the slow acoustic folk pieces, to hip-hop and rap, metal, and dreamy pop electronica, the compilation certainly has something for everyone.

He's also a member of garage, punk group, The Wild Dishes. For his WBBTMR side project though, he enlists the help of his musician friends. These friends dropped drum parts, a guitar lick or two etc., and helped create this soaring album.

Luckily, even though the name is a mouthful, the music is quite good, and this eclectic rock and roll blues band is actually made of just one permanent member, Will.

Will is also a member of garage, punk group, The Wild Dishes. For his WBBTMR side project though, he enlists the help of his musician friends. These friends dropped drum parts, a guitar lick or two etc. helping to create this soaring album.

Royalty-free music for professional licensing

Citing various influences from across genres like Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen, Guns ‘n Roses, The Black Crowes and even Alice in Chain, WBBTMR definitely resounds with a full rock and roll vibe. The only difference is that his sound also clearly infuses a blues and big band influence.

A song like Emotions, Joy and Dedication, feature beautiful swing guitars that makes you want to hit the dance floor and I just love the retro feel of this track. It’s also quite catchy and easy to like. On the other hand, Save The Day, is a moody, guitar-infused cut that echo with lovely solos and an overall, trippy vibe. One of those songs where you can just listen and take in all of the instruments. Spank Me is also an excellent track that feature’s a simple and catchy beat.

The album is definitely one to check out. The production process isn’t exactly top notch but the songs dominate and take center stage enough to make you forget. The best part about this record is that it’s available as as free download.

After you’re done with this, you can also download WBBTMRs other releases, particularly, Dixieland and Songs of Love and Brotherhood.

Prepare for some mayhem when listening to Ära Krâ. This death metal band from Germany knows how to knock your socks off or wipe sleep from your eyes in an instant.

I’m not exactly an expert in the metal genre, in fact my musical exposure to the genre is limited to Children of Bodom, In Flames and Lamb of God -if you count them as death metal. Nevertheless, Ferne Tage or roughly translated, “Distant Days,” is a pretty solid album filled with hardcore rock with good beats and ass-kicking vocals.

Released just last April 15th, the album comes with 7 free tracks that you can individually download. Although it’s mostly loud screaming and kickpedal drums, the songs are quite good. Sure, it might be hard for non metal lovers to appreciate the sound emanating from this band; the album is still equipped with tracks that are catchy and pretty much hardcore.

Ferne Tage by ÄRA KRÂ

Opening with rolling drums and loud screaming; September, showcases the amount of energy these guys have to offer. The track serves as the perfect introduction to all the sweet chaos that awaits listeners. It’s followed by the 5 minute cut, Odem. Again, more skillful screaming and instrument work from the guys. IThe band is definitely trying to define their sound and put a stake onto solid ground.

Although this album doesn’t offer anything extremely new, it’s a very decent record. Recording quality is pretty good and clean. For a debut, it certainly has its merits and worth checking out for any death metal lover out there.

It's been awhile since I've checked in with my loud side. Here's one really loud metal, prog album for you then. Fairy Crimes is Watertank's latest record. It's a short 6 track compilation that's offered for free. Members of the band are based in France and seem to be heavily influenced by various metal, progressive and even hardcore bands. Heavy double bass drumming, loud and prominent guitars as well as occasional honey voiced vocals are prominently displayed in the band's sound.

Watertank has been around since 2003 and have had their fair share of success. They’ve gotten the opportunity to share the stage with artists like Capricorns, Torche and Lair Of The Minotaur to name a few. Close that door of yours, turn the volume up and start rockin’! This City’s Got Laws opens and welcome the listener to this record. This instrumental track features an awesome guitar riff and sets the stage for the rest of the loud tracks that follow next. On its heels is the Tool sounding, Felony Days. With its progressive feel, the cut is an easy love for most rockers out there. Although I’m particularly keen on the vocals for this one.

Meanwhile, title track, Fairy Crimes, is more my type of music. The cut starts out strong with heavy drumming and trashy guitars. It’s essentially pure mayhem for about three minutes or so with this song. Attract Drama, on the other hand, is another cool track in the compilation. I’m still not a fan of the vocal work but the cut packs enough punch to make it part of my playlist.

Since their inception, the band has released a demo back in 2004 and have gone through a lineup change. These new set of tracks serve as a comeback for the group. Moreover, they’re also hitting the stage again after a hiatus with new faces on board.
