It’s been awhile since we featured a balls-out hard rock band here on the blog, so here’s one record you can sink your teeth into.

The Blackfires – Live at The Cutting Room captures the essence of the band’s sound. From wild riffs, impressive wailing vocals and crashing cymbals, the tracks from this mini session will resonate deep and hard for many fans of 70s rock and roll.

This New York outfit are fairly new in the scene but they’re already cooking up quite a storm in various underground rock/metal circuits. And once you hear them, it’s pretty easy to understand why people are buzzing.

It’s rare to see a rock band so expertly showcase their various influences without losing their own voice or sound in the process. However, The Black Fires make this feat look quite easy. Their music, for the most part, is a throwback to the era of Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple etc., but yet they manage to retain their modern voice amidst the concoction.

There’s only 5 tracks on here but it’s enough to give you a good picture of what you’re in for, in case you get to see the band live.

Energetic opener, Rocker Child, plays with traditional rock riffs and would certainly kickstart a good concert. Thanks to his powerful voice, frontman Cheggi, easily sways listeners while still keeping up with the instruments.

Livewire Babies is perhaps one of the most solid tracks on the record. Although almost all the cuts are likable, this one has great potential as a single. The guitar work is beautiful on this one so make sure to check it out.

The Blackfires is certainly a band to watch out for. Essentially, there are bands who cover 70s rock faithfully and then there’s this band. They take it a step further by using their love for the decade while ensuring their personality still stands out. As a result, they create a great balance between old school and modern that’s hard to pull off.

Track List:
1. Rocker Child 04:16
2. Gambit 05:16
3. Livewire Babies 06:31
4. Just a Thrill 04:58
5. Primal Love 07:26

When you put on Im Dirty Too, you wouldnt think theres only two people behind the music. Duo Zac Brown and drummer Jess Gowrie make up the whole band.

The Downhill Dive by I'm Dirty Too

Hailing from Sacramento, California; the pair first met in 2002 but it wasnt until 2009 when they got together to start playing music. After unsuccessfully looking for possible bassists and vocalists, theyve decided to retain their status as a duo.

That decision might be the best thing theyve made music-wise, The Downhill Dive contains solid rock tracks that will make The White Stripes step up the game a bit.

Sharing vocal duties, the duo beautifully harmonizes and blends with their instruments. Their sound can be generalized as rock but there are layers of other genres that crop up in their music.

Portions of trip hop, alternative pop and indie rock make up parts of compilation. Without You, Im Useless, presents the duos indie rock side with Jess dominantly and confidently singing for much of the track. In parts, this brings in memories of Karen O but with more mystery and confidence.

I Will is louder, grittier and overall a great noise fest that should be cranked up when played. Its a short 2 minute interlude featuring shouty vocals, epic dirty guitars and just tons of energy. Punky Bruiser, treads on the groups punk/alternative side while Cant Get It, explores their Radiohead influence. Zac offers up great vocals on this track too, something that shouldnt be missed.

Closing single, Spit, starts off quiet, slow and dark before bursting out as an epic prog-rock affair filled with massive drums, sweeping guitars and awesome energy.

The Downhill Dive is a highly recommended record. Personally, its one of my favorites for the year. They were right in continuing as a duo because from the sound of things, they already have everything they need. Itll be exciting to see their future projects though.

Coming from Melbourne, Australia, This Public Life makes their way to the musical spotlight through their acoustic driven outfit. But do not get fooled by their south-eastern suburb origins because they offer tunes with the industry credibility of the alternative and underground culture. They are heavily influenced by bands like Interpol, Sleepy Jacksons, as well as Turin Breaks and The Doves so you can expect the same sentiments from This Public Life.

The Banquet is a six track album from which they have conceived the cover art from a constellation reference.

It kicks off with Smile, a five minute soundtrack that already garnered more than 17000 listens around the world; the central theme of which is about getting up again whenever we fall down and asks the question “what is the sky for?”.

Gypsy talks about life lessons matched by the band’s Australian accent and heavy guitar riffs and solos prove to be a very good country side style song with a dash of indie-ness in it.

The album tops it off with War Machine that begins acoustically and then gradually adding more instruments to finish it alternatively.

All in all, The Banquet is a must listen for those who want light-hearted rock music that conveys deep meaning and implications.

Okay, Cloudkicker officially has my vote for being one of the sickest metal bands offering music for free online. Even more impressive perhaps is the fact that there’s only one guy manning all the luscious mayhem you hear when you hit the play button.

Ben Sharp, aka Cloudkicker, has been winning praises and reviews from artists and enthusiasts everywhere thanks to his consistent, enjoyable and innovative sound.

Beacons is his second album and was released a couple of years ago in 2010. Featuring 10 loud instrumental progressive rock tracks, you’ll find the record as a good distraction you’ll want to entertain for a long time.

Filled with drum machines and some heavy metal guitar loop, We Are Going To Invert… helps you grasp the pandemonium involved with this musician’s sound. Although there’s nothing really significant happening in the song, (it’s just a loop of instruments swash buckling for about five minutes) it delivers great energy and prepares listeners for what’s ahead.

The succeeding tracks, Here, Wait a Minute! Damn it! and We’re Going in, We’re Going Down, help shape the instrumental landscape Cloudkicker skillfully paints. The latter is particularly a personal favorite, as the artist enamors with his use of complex rhythms and interesting riffs.

You’ll find track after track of great metal composition when you listen to this one. The best part is that this music is offered for free. Of course, it would be much appreciated if you show your support to the artist by making a donation his way. After all, you’re getting such awesome tunes in return. It’s a pretty sweet deal if you ask me. Grab the download and enjoy.

First Time’s a Charm is a free compilation culled together by online indie music site/zine, Musical Mathematics. The site does reviews, features, promotions, and sells various music from up and coming indie rock bands.

What started as a small little place for bringing and exposing indie music has grown into quite a collective. The site now boasts various writers, designers and contributors; helping share and bring internet fans a taste of indie music heaven.

The site pretty much reviews and tackles different bands from different countries but they also strive to bring some of their local Leeds talents a chance to shine.

This is a debut compilation for the site and features 21 indie tracks from various talented bands. Opening with the hardcore Kent band, The James Cleaver Quintet and their track Snakes; the album opens strong with rowdy guitars, shouty vocals and unconventional rhythm.

Another band that’s featured here are the Lincolnshire natives, From a City in Ruins. Their single, Fin! Fin! Fin! is a mix of alternative and slight progressive rock coupled with whiny vocals. Although the song isn’t spectacular, there’s a nice Bloc Party vibe happening on there. Meanwhile, it’s followed by the brilliantly oddball cut, Face Tat from Zach Hill. This instrumental number is a little harder to describe with a multitude of instruments swaying and jumping along to get face time. Theo, Killington Fall, For Serious This Time, Talons and so much more are among the other bands to expect.

First Time’s a Charm is indeed a charming compilation record that should give you a good dose of indie rock/progressive/alternative bands to look into. Even if you might not like all of them, it’s almost certain you’ll find a band worth checking out here. Grab the download.

Stuedabakerbrown is an odd name for a band but what others might see as a poor name choice, the band more than makes up for with their sound.

Strangers We’ll Become is the band’s 2010 release. Containing 11 catchy tracks, the album has helped propel the band into the light. They’ve managed to tour with national acts like Say Anything and The Spill Canvas. Moreover, much of their catalogs are licensed for use on cable networks like MTV, ESPN etc.

Thanks to their refreshing and smart alternative rock sound, it’s hard to dismiss the band as just another altrock number.

One of the best praises for the album comes from Artistdirect.com editor, Rick Florino; he states that the album “hypnotizes in the best way possible. It’s like Radiohead meets The Fray but even a little catchier.”

True enough, the album is definitely an alternative gem. Made up of well-written, not to mention, catchy songs; it’s a record that comes with potential hit tracks left and right.

From the opening song, Boy and Arrow, listeners are greeted with a cut that in all honesty, sounds like something you should be paying for. It’s clean and provides a great intensity. The rest of the songs are also on par with this one. A few other tracks on my personal favorites list include Semi-Automatic, One in Three and Crash of Waves.

I kept thinking they sound like Daughtry minus the gruff and easily more likable. They satisfy listeners with enough pop appeal while making sure they never get mushy or too commercial.

Even though they might not be household names just yet, they definitely have what it takes. Stuedabakerbrown is a great reminder of a band that still flourishes in their field. They innovate and add new elements to the regular alternative rock sound; generating a brand new way of seeing/hearing the genre. Definitely an album worth the listen and the download.

Love Story in Blood Red is spearheaded by former Means frontman, Jason Frederick. Working together with producer and friend, Kris Poulin; the duo created this 4-track compilation of indie rock goodness.

Although it took years for the actual songs to be fleshed out as circumstances and life got in the way; the final recordings were presented by Kris to Jason after 9 years since he left him with it. They finally managed to release the short compilation last March 2011 over at indie netlabel, RockProper.com.

The EP also hosts several musician friends who were enlisted to help complete the EP by Kris during all those years.

Even though the songs took almost a decade before they were completed, they still have that fresh quality and capacity to appeal to any modern music lovers taste.

Opening with the mildly chanty, What’s So Special; the song is a midtempo track that features Jason’s callous vocals and a slight campfire vibe. On the other hand, Tell Heaven Hell’s Coming With You, has this laid back acoustic punk touch. The more you listen to the songs, the more Jason’s detached and slightly raspy vocals grows on you. Apart from the instruments, his voice clearly helps define each of the cuts.

Meanwhile, the remaining tracks, Write a Happy Ending and Beautiful Mothers perfectly cap the record. Both tracks are catchy with the latter dabbling more on Kris’ capacity to create a gorgeous sonic landscape. Instrument work and the atmosphere are also given more emphasis on this last track.

The entire EP is quite charming. It’s the type that you’ll love once you listen to it several times. The layers of sound and instruments are pretty good and each track just exudes with personality. Grab the download and take a listen. Definitely worth your time.

Tales is a short 4-track EP from a trio of lads from West Yorkshire, England. Creating a flurry of indie math rock in a span of more or less 15 minutes, the band’s debut is laden with some fun and catchy tunes worth taking note of.

Made up of Tom, Liam and Sean; Beware Wolf strays away from hiding underneath instruments and instead cleverly mixes varying tempo, beats and smart lyrics to round up their cuts. It’s this eclectic side coupled with the bands pop sensibilities that make each song in this record quite enjoyable.

If you listen to the band’s sound you wouldn’t think that they first had to overcome two big obstacles prior to getting their act together. First obstacle was that, Tom (vocalist) had to learn how to play a guitar from scratch after two of their former mates left their former band, Cub Club; second obstacle was that none of the remaining members actually had proper experience with songwriting.

Luckily, the trio pushed on and decided to learn and build up on their weaknesses. This resulted in the genre mashing, math, indie rock sound that you hear now.

Tales opens up with the rather cheekily titled, Don’t Trust the Crows, They Work for Mordor. The song is upbeat and catchy with unusual rhythm patterns thrown in between. They effortlessly jump from one genre to the next, entertaining listeners as they go. Meanwhile, We’ll Amount to Nothing, is a track that starts off mellow and evolves into a hodge podge of rock as it carries on. From chanty refrains, to hipster guitars, you’re treated to a whole range of sound in this one.

In the end, Beware Wolf is a band worth taking note of. Their debut EP comes with a great mix that’ll thrill even non-math rockers. Go take a listen and download the album. It’s available for free.

Born Without Bones is a laid back indie power pop band that you’ll find hanging around Milford, MA. Say Hello is the first album for the band and it’s a compilation that pretty much expands on the power pop/emo rock phase that most bands seemed to be stuck in for awhile.

The album features 12 tracks that run the gamut of punk, acoustic pop, and a bit of indie rock. I’m gonna put it out there that if you dislike power pop or anthemic highschool emo rock, then you best stay away. But if you live for this stuff, keep reading and you just might find a gem in this record.

The band is composed of Scott Ayotte (Vocals, Guitar), Jim Creighton (Bass) and Patrick Murphy (Drums) with Say Hello being only about a year old. It was recorded back in July 2010 at Pin Up Recording in Lancaster, PA.

It kickstarts everything with it’s title track; an upbeat, pop punk song that you can easily imagine playing over local radio stations. The track beams with rolling drums accompanied by heavy guitars and typical lyrics about relationships. It nicely starts off the album, setting up a good expectation for the upcoming songs.

Meanwhile, Out of Step and Falling Asleep, follow through on the energy and help to form the best part of the record. These first three songs definitely come with charm, typical of most emo pop punk tracks. Both instrument work and vocals are done really well plus the songs suit their style more. Certain cuts like You, on the other hand, showcase the band’s quiet side with a melodic piano ballad. Although I much prefer them to be loud and rocking out than taming it down, the song isn’t that bad.

Overall, the record is a typical, fun power pop/punk album that most people won’t have trouble enjoying. The album is a nice mix and most of the songs are pretty tight with catchy beats that stay on for a long while. As mentioned, I favor that they stay on the louder side of things than mellowing out, but they do show good versatility with the more subdued songs. Take a listen.
