The summer heat has arrived and what better way to celebrate it than with chill folk melodies. Released May 2012, Stella StageCoach’s A Band of Rogues is a soundtrack compilation to the feature-length film which carries the same title.

Stella StageCoach was formed in 2009 by brothers Matthew and Tim Morgan. The band originally created pure instrumental music to be used for film making projects, but eventually lyrics were added. Their songs are usually inspired by daily living and travels abroad.

The 8-track set opens up with Everything You Say, a banjo-infused piece that’s perfect for that afternoon drive to the country. Perk up your senses as hand clapping beats, reminiscent of Matt and Kim‘s Daylight, play throughout the piece.

Home follows up with a reflective introduction transitioning to a charming piano and drum ensemble. I love how the track slowly escalates to a celebration of instruments, channeling a steady positive vibe.

An ambient piece, Suitcase Song features a plethora of keys and layered spacey vocals. Wrapping up the album is Juliett, a romantic and melancholic piano ensemble. Close your eyes and let soft cooing keys lull your ears.

In A Band of Rogues, Stella StageCoach offers two essential elements � quality and emotions. The pieces here were not not just created from nowhere, they were born from inspiration and experiences that reverberates with each line and note.

Peter Anthony Red: The Projectionist

Be the first one to listen to Peter Anthony Red�s debut album The Projectionist released last June 26.

As stated in his bandcamp page, this conceptual EP follows a short, yet powerful narrative of a forgotten man working through the emotional roller coaster of a breakdown and subsequent search for personal reinvention.

Peter Anthony Red is the moniker for QN5 founder Tonedeffs�s latest musical project. This singing-based EP boasts five tracks that will surely make fans crave for its forthcoming full-length album entitled Hyperrealism.

Title track The Projectionist opens up with short, yet image-filled verses. Sounds from a motion picture projector cast an overall theme for the listeners.

Following with hazy electro melodies, Never Enough channels a lot of emotional energy to the listeners. I love how the orchestral scores are perfectly placed throughout the track.

Spiral surprises us with a rapid, almost-rapping delivery. This, blended with piano keys is the ultimate genre mash-up. Also, the fast rapping gives you a taste on the whirlwind mind of the Projectionist. Climb, on the other hand, is a gloomy yet blissful serenade of glowing harmonies. Close your eyes and let this ambient track transport you to another world.

Sealing up the EP is Stones. Peter Anthony Red breathes new life to this familiar sound creating stellar harmonies.

Overall, The Projectionist is a boundary-pushing EP that succeeds in utilizing hip hop�s idea of a mixtape and transforming it to a remotely different genre. Peter Anthony Red is introducing foreign musical territories, and it looks like we are going to like it.

Awake! Awake!: New Prime – Episode 5 Soundtrack

Making their second appearance here in the Frostclick blog is�Murfreesboro, TN group, Awake! Awake! Their first album, We’ve Been Strangers, was released back in 2007 and was a haven of infectious riffs and indie rock goodness.

This time around, they’re not only brandishing a deeper, more mental sound; they’re also playing it in support of Olan Rogers’ short film series, New Prime.

The 5-song soundtrack are all instrumental and range from moody guitar sweeps to epic, often cerebral sounds that were made to envelop the senses.�

New Prime is a sci-fi mini series that Rogers’ has released in YouTube. (You can check out his channel here.) Formerly a part of the creative outfit, BalloonShop; Rogers is now directing and creating his own short films.

The soundtrack by Awake! Awake! contains a dark and moody atmosphere, starting with the near 7-minute track, Pieces III. From the rich guitars to the tone and pacing, the song is a stellar opener. �The rockish vibe and overall sound serves as the perfect complement to the film. Most of the other cuts are worth noting as well and pretty much covers the typical sci-fi soundtrack; you’ll find quiet tracks like Escape from Earth to more menacing and haunting singles like, Phantom.

New Prime Episode is currently available for viewing on YouTube. It’s a great short film where the protoganists (Dutch and Feris) are on a hunt for the Phantom. Their exploits and “hunt” is chronicled in the series. There’s a little bit of everything on here, from action, to a great sense of humour. Currently, a few new episodes are out so go ahead and grab this soundtrack and make sure to check out the film too.

The Symphony of Science: Symphony of Science Bundle v1.5

Occasionally, you’ll come across really unusual albums online that you can’t help but be fascinated with. The Symphony of Science is one of these records. Taking a clue from the title alone, you can tell it’s gonna be a geeky and quirky ride.

The idea behind the record is to bring “scientific knowledge and philosophy to the public, in a novel way.”

Spearheaded by John D. Boswell, he initially released the experimental collaboration on video. Combining lectures and essays with a mix of electronic melodies, he created a unique record that’s not only enjoyable but also quite enlightening.

Maybe it’s the pure geekiness of the lyrics but there’s no denying that an album like this takes a very special type of audience. Opening with We Are Stardust, the track features American astrophysicist, Neil deGrasse Tyson. In the track, you’ll hear the scientists’ main idea of how we are made up from star dust and have evolved into who we are.

Each and every song expands on ideas about evolution and fate of humanity. Tracks like Children of Africa: The Story of Us, discusses the “cultural evolution of humans.” The 4-minute cut discusses man’s origins from Africa, expanding through its conquests in Europe and even to the space age. It’s an enlightening single that’s narrated/sung by Alice Roberts, Jacob Bronowski, Carolyn Porco, Jane Goodall, Robert Sapolsky, Neil deGrasse Tyson and David Attenborough.

Apart from these two tracks, you’ll find other topics like dinosaurs and quantum mechanics discussed in other songs. You can download this 16-track compilation for free. You can also check out videos for some of the tracks over at their YouTube channel.

Personally, I was surprised to actually enjoy the album so much. If you are a closet geek and have always appreciated learning, here’s a good chance to enjoy it with some catchy music as well. Take a listen, grab the download and make sure to share.

MIT Choir: Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana

Originating from 1230 AD, the Carmina Burana is a set of medieval manuscripts consisting of 254 poems and dramatic text. It was an epic piece of text that was created by theological students mainly to satirize the church. Most of the works centered on subjects such as wealth, the nature of life, financial abuses, joy of Springtime and even the pleasure and perils of drinking.

The Carmina Burana was translated into a beautiful cantata by German composer, Carl Orff in 1937. The composer’s version of the Carmina is now available as a free download right on FMA. Performed by none other than the MIT Choir under the direction of Dr. William Cutter (2006).

This is a great piece of classical/medieval music brought to life in these modern times.

The album itself might be tough to digest for people who aren’t really keen on classical cantatas. However, it’s quite a treat for those who enjoy this type of musical exercise.

Opening with “O Fortuna,” you might be surprised at just how familiar this piece is. Even if you might not be a fan, listening to this actually brings back nostalgic moments. It’s one of those tracks that gets overly played in epic battle scenes in several Hollywood films. The song has been used in hundreds of movies and television shows, a few of which include 300, Jackass, and The Lord of the Rings.

Omnia Sol Temperat and Olim Lacus Colueram are only two of the more melodic pieces. The latter being an aria that has to be sung in falsetto to express the singer’s suffering. It’s a lovely, very expressive piece that captures the cynicism and despair of the character.

According to the concert program notes, “Carl Orff’s principal aim evident in Carmina Burana has been a “total theatre” where music, words and movement (this piece is often choreographed) work together in producing an overwhelming effect. He sought models of such a work in two cultural traditions: classical Greek tragedy and Italian Baroque musical theatre.”

People who might not like classical pieces might still find something special in this record. If this MIT version is a bit too classical for your taste, there’s a more rock and roll version done by Dr. Phibes and the Ten Plagues which features several movements from Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana as well.

This is what Atticus and I have been working on for the last few months. We had a great time working with David Fincher on this and the film turned out excellent – something we’re very proud of. It opens in theatres Oct 1 and you should check it out.

Musically, this all came out of our secret laboratory – electronic in basis, but mostly organic sounding. Lots of experiments and emphasis on sound fraying around the edges while focusing on the proper emotional tone for the various scenes.

Regarding the purchase options, sorry about the “clunkiness” of not offering the full record digital download pre-sale (and having to visit Amazon). My agenda was to be able to offer this for the lowest possible price and this was the best way to achieve that. Free Machinarium Bonus EP – best flash game soundrack in years

Machinarium is a amazingly simple, yet extremely entertaining point-and-click game created by a Czech independent studio Amanita Design. It’s genius comes from sleek & interesting graphics design, smart and engaging puzzle-solving levels and a really relaxing and one of a kind soundtrack.

Both the game and the soundtrack are for sale on Machinarium’s website, but the studio released a 5-track bonus EP as a free download to the game’s fans.

Here you can see some of the game play and listen to the soundtrack.

The entire soundtrack, as well as the bonus tracks, are the work of Tomas Dvorak and a small number of musicians contributing to the project:

Matousov Godik – didgerridoo

I am generally not a big fan of industrial electronic music, but the entire soundtrack of this game was a pleasure to listen to – even when not playing the game. It has this weird calming, yet engaging quality to it with sounds that unmistakeably imitate machine life…

As for the game – if you are into puzzle solving, Machinarium will be an amazing treat for you. For the first time I though a flash game was entirely worth the money as it provided for hours worth of brain stimulating entertainment, oftentimes gathering the entire family around it.
