With nothing but a short sentence stated on his website “about” section, Journal by Shipwrek is as mysterious as it is engaging.

Aiming to capture those fleeting moments and translate them into a gorgeous mix of beats, synths and rhythm; Journal manages to create a rich landscape of sound that listeners can easily get lost in.

The man behind Shipwrek is Jason Siegler. His fascination with capturing his day to day existence into sound initially started as a simple project but quickly evolved into a complex set of recordings that throb and pulse with energy as well as life.

Journal is one of those albums you’d want to put on if you need a break from repetitive pop music or loud songs. Made up of laid-back, contemplative beats; it’s easy to mind map your way through things with this compilation on.

As mentioned, the songs on the album serve as a day to day recording of the artists’ life translated into beats, synths, samples and other quirky/soothing sounds. Starting off this album is Speakeasy, a concoction of trip hop beats and a slight gamer almost “curious” vibe throughout the track. One thing you’ll notice as the cuts take one turn after another, is that each one has its own little atmosphere and personality.

In Chasing Circles, you have that reflective mood playing off as the piano swirls and electronic beats fly around before eventually forming into a cohesive unit. Other cuts to check out include For the Days You Don’t Feel It and Barefeeted.

Overall, the entire record flows with emotion. Each instrument and sound used has a purpose; making it a charming album that could easily become the soundtrack to your day to day life as well. Take a listen and enjoy.

Initially released back in 2008, Mood Muzik 3 was a mash-up compilation between Joe Budden’s project as well Portishead’s current and old music. By 2010, the people behind the scenes decided to remaster the record to coincide with Joe Budden’s Mood Muzik 4 album.

This time around though, the tracks are more polished and they’ve snuck in a bonus cut for the fans. Although the whole mash-up thing has died down, this is still a great find if you’re fans of either Joe Budden or Portishead.

For the unfamiliar, here’s a little background for both artists in the mashup. Joe Budden is an American rapper from Jersey. He’s a solo artist but is also a part of hip hop crew, Slaughterhouse. Initially signed onto Def Jam, he eventually left for personal reasons. Despite the drawback, he took this freedom and created his own compilation and mixtapes.

Meanwhile, Portishead probably needs no introduction. They’re one of the bands that spearheaded trip-hop music back in the early 90s. Fronted by the Beth Gibbons, their sound is both mesmerizing and experimental. The band were on tour as recent as 2011 even though they went on hiatus for awhile, they eventually decided to perform again as a band.

This remastered mash-up brings two of these opposing forces together to compose a sonically interesting result. Several tracks that capture the mash-up essence perfectly are Warfare, opening cut, Hiatus; and Thou Shall Not Fall.

Overall, it’s a nice little combo if you want to be a bit experimental with your playlist. Mash-ups may no longer be en-vouge but this one is worth the listen. Check it out.

Track list:
1. Hiatus
2. Dear Diary
3. Roll Call
4. Family Reunion
5. Long Way To Go
6. Secrets
7. Warfare
8. Thou Shall Not Fall
9. Ventilation
10. All Of Me
11. 11 Talk To ‘Em (Bonus Song)

The DJs spin anything from dancehall, dub to jungle music in their sets. Hence, it’s no surprise that this record echoes with various genres coalescing into each other and creating one coherent track after another.

This amazing dance staple is offered for free and released under Brisbane-based independent label, Dub Temple Records.

Setting up the stage is, Get Aerty; a short 1-minute cut. After this, the boys get serious, so to speak and transform the mood of the EP into a party zone. Release the Hounds, Enter the Heroine, features fast paced yet steady beats with touches of industrial and electronica circling all over. It’s a great track for setting up the pace of the party.

The Battle for Europa, meanwhile, goes for a more electro-ambient vibe. It starts off slow and takes its time in evolving into a mesh of synths and electronic bits. Closing single, The Aerty Rises, brings the entire compilation full circle. With complicated mixes thrown in between, the song takes a nice flow without being overbearing.

Overall, the album is great for those who love to frequent clubs and dancefloors. You can expect great electronic dub sounds to come from the compilation. Moreover, it’s an awesome find especially for something offered for free. Take a listen.

Skillfully mixing 8-bit, dubstep, hip hop and experimental electronica in their sound, Ephera creates a surreal musical dreamland in their music.

Wonky EP is the latest effort from the now duo of Billy Gsellmann and Will Baker. Containing a whole fusion of genres, the album seems tailor made for bodies throbbing on a rave or club dance floor.

The EP contains 6 tracks and was released on October 2012.

The appropriately titled cut, Welcome, opens the mini-album with a series of random beats sprinkled across the first few seconds of the cut. It then starts to gel together courtesy of synths before being transformed into an intoxicating dance rhythm.

Safe, on the other hand, is a beautiful 8-bit menagerie as the Ephemera mixes it with more traditional electronic sounds. La Valse is a beautiful and mellow track that sees the musicians put their own spin into a classical masterpiece. Made up predominantly of piano work, the track is infused with synths and electronic work to produce a short but stirring cut that stands out.

Overall, Wonky has all the good parts of an electronic 8-bit dub compilation. Careful samples and an excellent balance of mixes provides great coherence and altogether makes the record a pleasant listen. Take a listen and grab the download if you like what you hear.

All India Radio is a four piece crew from the land down under. Even if you’ve never heard of them, chances are you might have encountered their songs from TV shows like CSI: Miami, One Tree Hill or Australia’s premiere series, Bondi Rescue.

They’ve released 8 albums since 2000 and continue to impress as well as win over more listeners thanks to their ambient sound. Their mix of hypnotic downbeat electronica serves as a lush soundscape that listeners can easily get lost in.

Free Me (Remixes & Outtakes) contains a collection of released/remixed and previously unreleased songs that’s offered by the boys for free.

The End or Near, kickstarts the album and features a Sade-like feel. Showcasing beautiful female vocals, moody guitars and a slightly dark atmosphere; the song graciously welcomes listeners to the band’s unique sound. It’s definitely an easy favorite and provides a high standard on the tracks you can expect to hear from the record.

Free Me (Remixes & Outtakes) by All India Radio

Other tracks that you shouldn’t skip on include, Morning Drops, which is a gorgeous acoustic song featuring the same female vocals from the first cut. It’s simple and clean while combining violins at the background. This is also one out of three previously unreleased tracks by the group. The other two, Waukaringa and Tijuana Dream, are two of the longest tracks in the record. They run for 7 and 6 minutes, respectively.

Overall, you get an album that’s definitely a must-listen for any ambient lover out there. It’s even a surprise that they’re releasing this for free since most of the tracks are pretty good and definitely done in great quality. Go ahead and take a listen. You’ll definitely enjoy this as well.

To put the joint download 2,1 million downloads in perspective….

If we would have been distributing our promotions still on CDs and lined them up by the shorter end side by side, we would need 162 miles [or 260 kilometers] of road to do so!!!

If we would have been distributing our promotions still on CDs and had to manufacture them all, we would have ended up with over 290 thousand pounds [or 131 thousand kilograms] of plastic!

If one download would equal one fan and all our artists would do a concert together, they would fill more than 118 Madison Square Gardens to accomodate them all!!!

FrostWire Creative Commons Mixtape Volume 3 Side B is a selection of Creative Commons licensed tracks from some of our favorite albums reviewed on FrostClick. We went through a very, very hard selection proces, as we had to narrow down our choices to only a few from hundreds of this year reviews.

Working with all of our promo artists has been a true pleasure and a lesson in determination and will to succeed. Most of them are truly independent, working solo to write, record & promote their music. It takes a special type of a person to pierce through the millions of wanna-bes & be noticed in todays music business. We think that the artists we’ve promoted are truly on a verge of making it big! And that doesn’t mean getting “signed” any more [although a few of them already did..] – that means having millions of fans around the world who will be there sharing the heck out of their creative commons licensed music, contributing big to their Kickstarter campaigns for new albums, buying their limited edition signed merchandise and coming to their concerts.

For more awesome music out our last year’s compilation & follow us on Facebook and Twitter!

We’ve been reviewing free music downloads for you since 2008. We think we’ve been doing a pretty good job curating the content we present to you every day. Nonetheless, we recognize that the Internet is a wide universe of content no one very small team can effectively canvas. If you think you know an artist that’s worth reviewing/promoting, pls write to us at kademlia or natalie @frostwire.com. Just remember the download needs to be free and preferably under a Creative Commons license so it’s absolutely clear the artist wants us all to share their work.

Thanks to all and happy sharing in 2013!!

Phototaxis is a special band that’s made primarily of Yael Feldinger (lead vocalist and singer), as well as Itay Tsuk (composer, arranger and pianist). They’re joined together by the talented crew of Nir Blum, Roy Cheled, Yael Geva and Neta Cohen Shani.

The band is only a couple of years old, but they seem poised for success; having their debut record come out to critical praise in their home country of Israel.

Fusing a lush set of tracks that echo jazz, blues and a trip hop atmosphere; Pretty Ugly is a strong record that aims to please its listeners and does it successfully.

Phototaxis sounds like the lovechild of Macy Gray and the Sneaker Pimps. Their sultry blues jazz and trip hop combination is endearing. You’ll find yourself gently swaying to the grooves of the tracks and being mesmerized by the sound.

Released last 2010, the album is a couple of years old. Starting with the title single, Pretty Ugly, listeners are greeted to great vocal work and a slightly-drunkin’-jazz-bar mood throughout the cut. It’s probably one of the best tracks representing the group and album in total.

Alone, is another enticing single that bears a slightly stalkerish-feel. With a steady beat and hypnotic vocal work, it’s quite catchy. Meanwhile, Isn’t It Funny is a more serious jazz ballad that deserves a slot in a James Bond film; while ending track, Leftovers, creates a mesh of synths, samples marked by a melodic hazy veil.

Pretty Ugly is nowhere near being ugly. In fact, its’s an awesome record especially for people who adore the whole trip hop/jazz blend. Featuring great composition and recording, it is a real gem in a sea of overabundant mediocrity. Take a listen and see if you like it too.

Progressive techno and dance don’t get enough lovin’ in the mainstream market but it doesn’t mean it’s not worth taking a listen to.

Makkadessia is a duo made up of Yauhen Bardouski and Maxim Kuharenko; two young producers from Belarus. Moonou is the duo’s latest release and hauls in a flurry of the house, techno, progressive and dub sounds with them.

Released under Wavelike.net, the label specializes in offering electronic music that are licensed and shared for free under a Creative Commons License.

Despite having plenty of sites to check out their sound, there’s hardly any solid information about the duo. One thing’s for certain though, their sound is a gorgeous mix of muted snares and house/trance rhythms fit for a psychedelic time.

Starting the compilation is Original, the track showcases hypnotic beats lined with occasional vocal samples. Despite being 8 minutes long, listeners are treated to a wall of sound that pulses and throbs incessantly. Giving off the same vibe throughout the EP, each track on the album shows off a resident feel and aura. Most of these are easy to dance to and would make the ideal soundtrack for clubs as well as rave parties everywhere.

Overall, you’re in for some type of sonic experience when you listen to this record. The album is available as a free download right now, so take a listen and enjoy.

Fifty Grand’s music can be best described as experimental dark electronic drone.

The person behind the sound is Emily Onofrio, aka Fifty Grand. This is one of several records Aural Sects has released for their 2012 roster.

Aural Sects is a netlabel that works with independent artists in different departments of electronic music, from “dance, electro, pop, ambient, witch, juke, noise and anything we find compelling,” according to the collective.

From opening track Rabid Mastiff, this self-titled debut starts on a dark path with throbbing beats and a synth driven, strobe light vibe. It’s followed by, Affection, a slightly disjointed single that flourishes with moody, ethereal rhythm and a haunting aura. The song feels like watching a worm prepare to turn itself into a chrysalis as it slowly seals itself in.

Most of the tracks echo this sentiment of metamorphosis and provide a quiet and haunting soundtrack for such events. Occasionally, there are dancefloor/rave-ready cuts like O Jewel! O Valuable! that come your way.

Overall, it’s a great record to check out. It’s ideal for those who love slow electronic dub with a twist. The subtlety and dark atmosphere lends itself well to introspection and the occasional night time drive. Take a listen and grab the download if you like what you hear.

Actraiser's Phantomile EP is a resurrection of sorts for Cut Music. After taking a mini-hiatus, they're back with an explosive and equally catchy free EP for all of you electro ambient obsessives out there.

Bristol-based producer Actraiser delivers an magnetic five track compilation that flourishes with mystical dubstep tracks while sticking to classic ambient rhythms and beats.

This the first for the artist and as expected from previous Cut Music recordings; it's setting great groundwork for future releases.

Actraiser’s Phantomile EP is a resurrection of sorts for Cut Music. After taking a mini-hiatus, they’re back with an explosive and equally catchy free EP for all of you electro ambient obsessives out there.

Bristol-based producer Actraiser delivers an magnetic five track compilation that flourishes with mystical dubstep tracks while sticking to classic ambient rhythms and beats.

This the first for the artist and as expected from previous Cut Music recordings; it’s setting great groundwork for future releases.

Actraiser creates music that’s suitable for creating atmosphere while at the same time comfortable to groove to on the dance floor.

Like most Cut Music releases, this one only features a few tracks but each one presents some of the best from the artist. Starting slow and melodic, title-track Phantomile, opens the EP. Infused with a subtle tribal hypnotic vocal loop and a steady flow of synths; the song is ethereal and conveys a dark yet calming image. Meanwhile, Gryzor steps up the tempo a bit and provides a more dance club worthy rhythm.

The rest of the tracks complete the compilation. Listeners get a nice mix in Shadow Boxing; ambient jungle beats in The King is Dead, and a subdued ending track in, Walkers.

Actraiser definitely knows how to set the mood and create a sonic paradise that’s worth exploring. Get your hands on this right now and also check out the other Cut Music releases we’ve recommended here on the blog. It’s well worth it.
