123D Catch by Autodesk gives you the power to create 3D models of practically anything. Instead of sculpting or editing meshes, Catch takes a simpler approach. Simply take pictures of an object from various angles. Load these into the program and it will turn the images into a 3D object.

A video tutorial appears when you first start the app. You will then see some preloaded samples. The I symbol has four options: About, Help, Getting Started and Support. Before you take pictures, try the 3D samples first so you know how to move an object. You can pan, rotate and scale objects.

Clicking the New Capture Button will start a tutorial when you launch the app for the first time. Finish the tutorial. Take a picture by pressing the camera button. The app keeps track of how images you’ve taken. Press Finish Capture when you’re done.

The images will be sent to Autodesk’s servers where they will be transformed into 3D and then sent back to your iPad when modeling and rendering is complete. The time it takes depends on the number of photos you took.

This is really the app’s best feature. If you’re familiar with 3D software, you know how resource intensive the process can be. Rather than force your iPad to do the work, Autodesk servers will do it instead. Catch is free, but you must have an account of some sort. It can be an account in Google, Yahoo!, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn etc.

123D Catch is part of the 123D family. The other apps include Sculpt, Make and 123D.

Each mode comes with its own set of modelers and editors. Its auto-UV feature makes adding textures easy.

There are a lot of mesh and selection tools plus lights, materials and colors. You can export objects as OBJ and other popular formats. Standard features include weld, cut, bridge, bevel, extrude and rotate among others. Advanced features include inset, shear, bend, intersect, circularize etc. You can use its Smooth Preview to assess your model. Other advanced tools like sculpt, tweak and Virtual Mirror are perfect for modeling symmetrical objects.

There are a lot of options, but you can configure its interface. You will find more commands with its right-click menus. Keep your cursor over the mouse over a menu, a brief explanation will pop up. It can import ndo, 3ds, ai, .lwo/.lxo, .obj and other popular formats. You can export to 3ds, ai, obj, pov and many others.

Wings 3D is available for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux. It is continuously being updated. The software uses OpenGL for rendering. However you can export and render with YafRay, POV-Ray and other software.

For a freeware program, ChaosPro has a large number of features. As expected, it can generate Mandelbrot and Julia sets. But other fractal types like Escapetime, Attractor, Quaternion and more are supported. The application is multiwindowing, multitasking and supports an unlimited number of colors. The software is compatible with UltraFractal and FractInt.

In other words, ChaosPro can produce just about any type of fractal there is. The limitation is only set by the formula you use. You can even utilize formulas made by other users to generate fractals. Among the popular ones it supports are Lyapunov Spaces, the Rossler attractor and other dynamic systems. In addition, Lindenmayer systems and IFS fractals are supported. Those new to fractal art may not be familiar with these terms, but you will get to know them better once you try the software.

Even though fractals are about mathematical dimensions, you don’t need to be a mathematician to use one. You just start the program and start dragging some controls. Adjusting the settings will produce striking images.

ChaosPro can make (AVI) animations. Your 2D fractal creations can be viewed in 3D. Advanced users can write their own formulas. But you don’t need to be a genius to appreciate fractals. The images are stunning and can be used for computer generated art or on the web.

Paint programs today are powerful but often complicated and difficult for beginners. Doodle Buddy from Pinger is a suitable medium for budding and casual artists. When you start the app, it loads a blank canvas. The bottom deck contains all the painting and drawing tools.

To start painting on the iPad version, simply put your finger on the screen and move it around. Tap the Undo or Clear icons to make corrections. If you want to start over, tap the trash icon. You can erase an entire drawing by shaking your iPad.

There are a lot of paint and editing tools. Tap the icon that looks like a chalk. A menu will pop up: the tools include eraser, smudge, glitter, chalk and brush. You can modify the paint and ink color. Doodle Buddy is surprisingly accurate for a finger painting app. The smudge tool is very good at adding depth to your paintings.

Tapping the stamp icon allows you to use clip art: animals, bugs, smileys and many more. Small and larger versions of each clip art are available. Tap a clip art to select and tap again to place it in your canvas. Tap again on the canvas to paste numerous copies of the image.

Doodle Buddy’s Tic Tac Toe icon allows you to use backgrounds that have been pre-drawn. Finally, tap the picture icon to save your painting and tap the envelope icon to share your paintings via email.

In spite of its many features, Doodle Buddy is easy to use. The interface is very clear and the icons are well placed. It works best on the iPad due to the extra large screen.

Fotobounce is a photo management software that lets users upload images, even on a phone. Once on the web, these images can be shared. What makes the software different is its security. You decide who gets to see your photos. The software from Applied Recognition Inc also makes it easy to upload pictures to AirSet, Flickr and Facebook.

But what sets Fotobounce apart is its facial recognition technology. This feature streamlines photo organization and tagging. You can delete images as well. That a free program has a technology that can tell people apart is a pleasant surprise. The program’s setup wizard assists in scanning images. These are added to the program automatically. You can invite your friends to view the pictures, collections and albums.

For many though, Fotobounce’s biggest attraction is its private, secure nature. Once you download and install the program, you can configure it so only your friends and family (called bouncers by the program) will see the images. The network is centralized in your computer, not some unknown website or service.

Fotobounce is quick; loading several photos will only take a few moments. Thanks to its facial recognition feature, the software learns to recognize them and use the right tags. The versatile sorting options make it a snap to arrange numerous pictures. Also, you don’t need to re-tag when uploading on a social networking site. It also helps you remove pictures from Facebook quickly. Pictures in Fotobounce can be emailed at full resolution.

Fotobounce is a well rounded free photo management application. If you love sharing photos online but wary of losing your privacy, this program is a good alternative.

There are tools for smoothening, pulling and pushing a model. Use your fingers to twist, pinch or swipe. These sculpting tools can be selected directly. You can sculpt the mesh or the model. Some creases appear on the reverse side. However, this really isn’t a problem because there is a symmetry mode.

There are eight tools for sculpting objects. You can sculpt freely or use the sliders to enter more precise measurements. Sculpting is intuitive; use two fingers to scale; to rotate, drag anywhere outside your model. The symmetry / mirror is a time saving tool. You only have to sculpt one half of a model and use the tool to mirror it.

123D Sculpt has texture imprinting that allows you to load an image or paint with color. Position the model below the image. Start painting the mesh. You can upload a completed model on Autodesk’s website gallery. You can also save and render images locally.

Even if you have no experience sculpting, 123D Sculpt should be easy to learn. Most free clay modeling apps will have you pushing and pulling a sphere into shape. Sculpt on the other hand, comes with several preset models; planes, cars, human heads, animals and more. Instead of starting from scratch, you can select one of the presets and modify them to suit your needs.

Graphics and photo manipulation applications are essential for photographers. If commercial software is too expensive, you can try darktable, an open source alternative. This Linux program has many features, but at its heart it is a virtual darkroom for photographers.

darktable comes with numerous effects and filters. These include lowlight vision, bloom, soften, vignetting and watermark among others. The quality is similar to the effects found in commercial software. Aside from the effects there are correction modules (hot pixels, denoise, sharpen etc) and color image operations. Some of the features are input/output/display color profile management, color correction, color contrast and a channel mixer.

darktable’s tone image feature set includes tone mapping, zone system and tone curve. You can of course perform basic operations such as rotate, crop, invert and white balance. What will attract photographers to darktable is its non-destructive editing. There are other features worth pointing out. It has a very good export system.

The user interface is well designed. Users can see the numerous plugins available clearly on screen. The modules (Effect, Correction, Color, Tone, Basic) are easily within reach. You can expand each part by clicking the More options. Remember, the effects you apply are in an xml file linked with the image. The original source is unaffected.

Graphics artists will also appreciate its tag searching and sorting capability. darktable is an image enhancing program. This isn’t designed to make new images. You will use this to touch up existing images. Because it is non-destructive, any effect you apply does not touch the image.

The software is compatible with the following Linux distros: Ubuntu, Fedora, Opensue, Arch, Gentoo and Macosx.

For a free app, PicsArt Photo Studio is comparable to paid programs in terms of capabilities. However, the software is not difficult to learn. Icons are used instead of text, keeping the interface tidy. Its notification bar is located under the seven main icons. They are Photo, Camera, My Network, Profile, Gallery, Collage and Draw.

The Edit Mode is where the action takes place. A dialog box prompts you to get a picture from your social profile, phone gallery or camera. Users can open photos from their Dropbox, Facebook, Flickr or Picasa accounts. The procedure couldn’t be simpler; after tapping the icon, you can log in and get your pictures. Among the available editing tools are Tool (for cropping, rotate, flip), Callout (add speech bubbles), and Text tool (it comes with presets). You can also draw on a picture.

PicsArt Photo Studio comes with clip art and some stickers. You can also add an image over another one. Masks and special effects are also available. These work just like those in other photo editing software. Images can be uploaded to your social network account or an SD card.

The Drawing Mode is for those who want to create pictures from scratch. The Collage is self-explanatory. You use it to combine photos. There are plenty of backgrounds and frames included in the app, allowing for variety. My Network is used for connecting to your networks, while the Profile is for logging in.

What happens when you write a book about a HipHop-KungFu Master Super-Hero from NYC, then organize a team of artists from New York City, Mexico, El Salvador, Argentina and Philippines to re-create the book in Comic Book format, without any dialogs whatsoever and backed by a mixtape? You get MASTERNEVER.

Review by Mona
Hip-hop’s first superhero is about to unfold in the comic community. Masternever and The Flow of Death by Clarke Illmatical and Gotham Zoetrepe is the first peer to peer made comic book ever featured on a p2p network.

As stated on the website the comic is about Arious Alcide, a young martial arts master living in Chinatown, New York, who has been given the task of adding his fighting style to a 2,000-year-old Chinese legacy, known as The Never Ending Masters.
In order to do so, he must decipher an ancient document written in a mystical form of graffiti known as the Forgotten Hand.

As he sets out on his quest to find the legendary writer who created the document, he is confronted by a Triad family, a sorcerer, and several Kung Fu masters who want to defeat him.

Included in the download are some articles about the people who were the creators’ inspiration behind the project – the Taoist martial artist Novel Bell and the NY graffiti artist JESUS SAVES.

Scrolling through the pages, you will realize that this is not your ordinary comic book. The first chapter welcomes you with pages of visuals over visuals but without any dialogue. It’s because the comic is intended to be read with a provided mixtape/soundtrack, which is included with this very download. Now, how brilliant could that be?

It is not new for a comic book to lack letters, but to accompany it with another form of media makes this one a one-of-a-kind gem. It will surely elevate the overall reading experience.

Visually, the illustrations are spot on. The use of neat and geometric layout makes it more accessible for first time readers. I personally like the Chinatown setting as it gives the story more colour and substance.

All in all, Masternever and The Flow of Death is a breakthrough masterpiece that’s not afraid to go outside the box. The exploration on such different medium is what makes it something to be anticipated issue after issue.

It was not an easy road for this work to surface. But the creators’ perseverance and belief on the story made it all possible. And for that, I give this comic nothing but respect.

How we discovered MasterNever at the New York City Comic Conference 2011

I had the opportunity to attend the NYC ComicCon 2011 last year and I couldn’t resist stopping at the MasterNever booth when I saw the beautiful Kung Fu + Hip Hop + Black/White illustrations, luckily Clarke Nigel aka “Illmatic” (creator, writer and director) was there at the booth and I had a chance to tell him how we support independent content creators here on FrostClick and on FrostWire.

To my surprise Clarke told me that the book was actually a peer to peer project as well, that every Chapter of the book was illustrated by different artists that collaborated from all over the world, not only that, the Comic Book was meant to be enjoyed alonside a hip-hop mixtape… I knew right there we had to share this with the world.

After a very long year of back and forth (and a long queue of FrostWire promotions) we finally put together a Creative Commons licensed bundle with the first Chapter of MasterNever for you to share and enjoy. It’s packaged in the form of an eZine, it comes in .CBR format for those of you who already read comic books on electronic devices, or in PDF if you don’t want to install special software.

Chapter 1 will take you to contemporary New York city, more specifically to Chinatown, where some Asian Mafia vs Kickass-BaddAss-Kungfu-Misterious-Legendary Super hero (with an ego reminiscent of old Kung-fu master characters from old chinese movies) action is about to take place. At the end of the chapter I wanted to know more and I’m sure so will you.

We need all the feedback we can get from you guys, below I’ll leave contact links for you to reach out to the MasterNever team, if you guys love this we think we can convince Clarke to release more episodes for free. If you want to get physical copies of the book head to the official website and support these talented artists by getting yourself a copy of the first Comic Book ever to be featured on FrostWire.
