Maxthon is not as well known as the other browsers, but it actually has enough features to match them. A product of Maxthon International, it has two display modes; Retro and Ultra. Retro mode is for old websites created with legacy tools. Ultra Mode is for the latest websites. The browser uses the appropriate mode so pages display faster.

There are a bunch of other extras included: ad and pop-up blockers, multisearch, autofill and drag and drop. You can do screen captures, translate languages, get feeds and take notes.

The browser installs quickly. The tabbed interface is similar to those of other browsers. What sets it apart are the aforementioned toolbar apps. You can also customize the toolbars so only your favorite functions appear.

Bookmarks from other web browsers can be imported as HTML. Its Favorites menu will look familiar to you.

Validated websites have a Safe icon. You can find out more info by clicking the icon. Its Ad Hunter feature works very well to stop pop-ups from appearing. An icon makes it easy to toggle it on or off. There is even a button to silence websites that play music or sounds when they load. This is a really cool feature.

But Maxthon’s best feature is the dual mode. The square on the address bar changes from yellow to blue to indicate which mode / renderer is active. You can switch between the two modes manually. What becomes obvious is the speed difference when using the modes. It’s a unique feature that isn’t found yet on any other browser. Speed, reliability and support for numerous add-ons make this worth a try.

The image can be saved locally after you are done editing. The URL can be shared with friends or coworkers. This is a nifty tool that helps with collaborative works. Everything is done inside your browser, so there’s no need to launch other applications.

Awesome Screenshot can capture any visible area/region. You have the option of saving an entire image. Captured areas can be cropped, with specific dimensions indicated. It takes just one click to upload a captured area. Links can be shared on Twitter and Facebook.

Awesome Screenshot is designed for a simple task, but it does the job well. It has more functionality than similar utilities. It doesn’t take up a lot of resources and runs unobtrusively. As stated, its numerous functions work great in projects that require collaboration. But even casual web users will find applications for it.

Do Not Track Plus (DNT+) is a browser add-on. The fact is that social networks and ad companies monitor what you are doing on the Internet; where you go, for how long and how often. With DNT+, you are protected and can browse in private.

Created by Abine the Online Privacy Company, DNT+ blocks any tracking software or method used without affecting websites or the way you surf. The utility was originally designed for Firefox, but it now supports Google Chrome, IE and Safari. An Opera version is now being developed.

Once the add-on is installed, site trackers and ads will be prevented from tracking your web activities. This will be turned off only if you change the settings. In most sites, DNT+ rebuilds buttons so your social activities are not affected. The only difference is your privacy is protected. It doesn’t matter where you go around the Web; DNT+ will follow and protect you.

The interface is clean, with the on/off button very easy to spot. Despite blocking trackers, there is no perceptible lag time when loading sites.

After you install DNT+, it appears as a button on the toolbar. It displays the tracking blocks on the site you are at. You might be surprised at how many trackers DNT+ blocks on your favorite sites. When you click the button, the trackers appear. They are arranged in three groups: companies, networks and social buttons.

If one of the buttons is something you want, just click to unblock it. Every section has links that explain what the app is for. The add-on works automatically. If you want privacy when on the Internet, this is a must-have.

All users hooked onto Internet Radio will be very familiar with Pandora. The service that allows users to create custom playlist and every particular station is set by a specific artist or song or a mixture of multiple items fused into a single station.

The feature and functionality embedded in Pandora that totally takes away the cake would be the Feedback function that has an impact not only on the particular track, but on the entire Playlist on a whole.

So here how it works: there are two feedback options thumbs-up and thumbs-down. So whenever you hit the thumbs-down button on any artist or song, Pandora remembers that and makes sure songs very similar to the disliked one are never played often on your playlist.

Similarly if you hit the thumbs-up button for an artist or song makes Pandora play that artist or song and everything closely related to that genre more often. The whole idea of this sort of feedback is to make music listening on Pandora more customized and also ensuring that only that music is played often which a particular user will prefer listening to.

After initial release in the year 2000, Pandora has diversified by infiltrating new areas such as Web-Browsers and Smartphone. So now, an Android user or iOS owner with internet connectivity can have Pandora access 24×7. The buck does not stop there, with a single account, a user can access his/her saved playlist, artist, music on various devices without taking the pain of setting up everything from scratch.

A question that frequently arises is “How does Pandora make money?” Well, they do make their own share of profits after paying the royalties to various record companies. The most important revenue is the advertisements but there is also user-subscribed accounts. So if a user doesn’t want to see or hear the ads, he or she can subscribe to Pandora One at $36 annually. Pandora greatly makes profit as this subscription fee to cover the users content cost per stream and make up for lack of the advertising.

The Pandora service is limited only to the United.States at this point of time, after the recent Copyright Royalty Board rulings increase the fees and seek license guarantees, this ruiling affects all U.S based internet radio stations. In the present times, Pandora service is widely accessible on all iOS devices, Android, Blackberry, Windows Mobile devices, HP WebOS and Sprint Nextel have their very own modified Pandora version.

StayFocusd is a Google extension designed to do one thing: prevent you from wasting time when working. Once you install it in Chrome, you won’t have a chance to procrastinate. This extension is great for limiting the time you spend on a website.

Published by Transfusion Media, the program is very intuitive and can be customized to make Web surfing guidelines to suit your preferences.

Once you install StayFocusd, its icon will appear on Chrome’s address bar at the right. Go to the site that you want to block. When you’re there, click the icon and choose “block entire page”. Note: you need to set the time length allowance for your viewing before the blocking takes effect. This can be found in the settings link. The icon will turn red to confirm your settings. Clicking this will show a timer counting until the block kicks in.

Users can determine when the utility will be reset. You can specify when the tool will turn off (days, hours, etc). You can block the entire site or leave subpages available. Just go to the Settings link to decide which sites will be blocked or allowed. There is a tab where you can configure the program even more.

The Nuclear option will block the entire Internet. You’ll only be able to access it after the time limit you set expires. Or you can just block every website except the one related to your work.

StayFocusd is very effective. Once you block a site, there is no way to access it until the time limit is up. You cannot reverse the Nuclear option if you activate it.

Usually while browsing the web on the smartphone, the tiny screen is not the only distraction, it is the clutter of the mobile web-pages and the numerous adverts. So if this is the source of your distraction, then it is time to install the Readability app on your device and make reading a pleasurable experience.

Developed by Readability, LLC., the app is a great product and really does the job without beating around the bush. The Safari browser on iOS 5 already has this feature, but users who want a more personalized experience will surely dive-in to try this one.

The Readability app turns any website into a clean and easy to read experience; you can also save a given web page to read the content at a later time. To a users’ surprise, the app works very well and intelligently finds out the content to be ironed out of sight. Users can catch up on reading what they have saved with the free Readability add-on for the web browser.

The activation of the Readability feature helps in making the entire web-page layout a clean, uncluttered, elegant, single-column reading view, with the typography provided by Hoefler & Frere-Jones.

Users who are very particular about their reading material will love the customization options such as adjusting type size, contrast and margins according to their liking. Moreover, with Facebook integration, users can post their favorite reads along with comments on the social-networking site in a jiffy.

Overall, the app is great and with the web-browser add-on and the dedicated app, reading articles on the device will no more be annoying. Moreover, users of Readability enjoy an unlimited, searchable archive that syncs on the web. As soon as users are done reading an article, simply tap it to archive.

The Android ecosystem is filled with some really interesting apps that increase the productivity by leaps and bounds and UC Browser 8 is a perfect example. This particular browser not only delivers a desktop-like experience, but also increases the browsing speed considerably.

Developed by UC Web, the quality of the app is something to be rest assured off. The developers claim that UC Browser 8 delivers a true web-browsing experience on a smartphone.

The biggest advantage enjoyed by UC Browser 8 over competitors is the fact that it works on the U3 Kernel. A kernel is basically an update that enhances the entire software productivity and boots right after the BIOS. Under this app, the U3 Kernel merges and syncs with the smartphones’ hardware more efficiently and effectively for the optimum performance.

The browser itself is very intelligent and works with a mind of his own, with great improved performance under-the-hood. Performance enhancements are the name-of-the-game with increased browser speed, intelligence, safety, as well as energy-saving treats. Furthermore, the browser includes various smart tools such as smart reading, smart forum, and smart screen adapting for proper utilization of colors and perfect webpage rendering.

Another great addition is the inclusion of favorite web-pages loading with much faster speeds. I really like the feature which comes in the form of “My Shortcuts”, saving the most visited site directly on the home-screen for better and faster accessibility.

Compared to 2G, 3G and Wi-Fi connections, the UC Browser 8 renders the web-pages much faster compared to older and more traditional mobile web-browsers. Overall, this browser uses the most advanced web technology and helps in giving a full-fledged desktop experience; all this while consuming the least amount of power. A thumbs-up to UC Browser 8.

Angry Birds by Rovio is undoubtedly the most popular game out there with smartphone downloads hitting the billion mark. And now the whole magic crashes on the Google Chrome web-browser. No need for an iOS, as Android device’s most enchanting casual game experience is now right on your desktop PC; so use all those angry birds to crash and destroy the green pigs who stole their eggs.

There are currently two versions available of the game; SD Version (Standard) and HD Version (High-Definition) depending on the graphic card, RAM and other resources available on your PC.

Playing the game on a LCD monitor on full-screen mode really heightens the game experience, making you want more of the Angry Birds with special powers, those which explode, zoom-faster, multiply, or who drop off exploding eggs. This is not all, however, as after completing all the 3 stages of the game with 20 levels per stage, Rovio decided to unlock an entire new level exclusive to the Google Chrome user.

The gameplay is slick and very cool, just so are it’s graphics. There is nothing better to have on your desktop every time you find yourself in need for some quality distraction and the best news about the entre deal is that the game comes for free. The only thing needed to play is a Google Chrome browser (which incidentally is also Free). So gear up and start firing those real Angry Birds and catapult them to get their revenge.

Mozilla Firefox is synonymous with desktop browsing and it certainly has come a long way with solutions spanning to the smartphone territory. The recent update the browser received has indeed hiked the overall usage and adds some of the most amazing web-browsing features.

Firefox 8 adds improvement to the Html render and also supports Html 5 for a much better gaming experience in the web-browser itself. Another great addition to the line-up was Twitter integration (will get to that, later in the post).

There is a plethora of options at the users fingertips with Firefox 8. Now, the user can customize the entire browser to his/her own personal taste by either keeping it minimal or adding everything under the sun. Talking about the smartphone version, Firefox 8 is something that heightens the entire web-browser experience on the small-screen. Users can expect to type less and surf more as the browser throws-up options of the most visited site in the address bar. Full-screen mode is something of a blessing, so now web-pages load up on the entire screen without any distractions in sight.

Firefox has recently entered a partnership with Twitter, and now the browser has an integrated twitter search. You have the option to select Twitter from the available search-engines from the drop-down menu. Basically, you can browse your Twitter timeline, search for Tweeps, users and everything else you can imagine.

It seems Firefox 8 takes security very seriously on both desktop, as well as on it’s mobile version. With the availability of a customized security settings, users can disable a site from tracking your every move with the help of cookies. Also, there is an identity button that gives full information about the site, including the encryption being used. These identity icons are represented by a passport-officer icon in three colors, Grey indicating no site information, Blue – partial information, and Green – complete site information.

The power to personalize also gets a makeover with the introduction of “Persona” on both desktop and mobile version. “Personas” are specifically designed Firefox browser graphics that alter and revamp the browser buttons and menus. That is not all, the desktop version allows most frequently visited sites to be added in the app tab with a permanent place and one-click access to the site.

A very neat and mind-blowing addition to the Firefox ecosystem is the “Stay in Sync” feature. This allows users to keep their bookmarks, saved passwords, auto-fill setting, history, browsing data, all in harmony between the desktop and smartphone. Moreover, a webpage opened on the desktop can be picked up from the same point on the mobile with the “Stay in Sync” function; all you need is a Firefox sync account.

Overall, Firefox 8 brings in smooth integration, perfect web-browsing, functionality, and simplicity to the web-browsing field. Also the seamless integration between the desktop and mobile version deserves an applause. The addition of Html5 support will be the biggest advantage for users inclined towards graphic-intensive content and in-browser games.

Note: The iPhone Firefox-Home is not a browser, but it syncs with the desktop Firefox and provides a complete list of bookmarks, history and recently viewed pages.

And so productivity is enhanced for two of the most hardcore mobile platforms, namely, Android and iOS, with nothing other than the Dolphin Browser.

The app is aimed at being an efficient and smart browser with a plethora of options you might have still didn’t even hear about. Developed by Mobotap, this browser surely makes the cut.

Performance wise, unlike most browsers available for download, Dolphin really does change the way people browse the web on their mobile devices with some very fine tool integration and intuitive features. So what really sets this browser apart? Well, for starters, it adds functionality that the default Android and iOS browser lacks.

The ‘gesture’ feature is the strongest point, so now, instead of going the traditional way of punching in the website name on the keyboard, users can just make a “G” on the screen and Voila! the Google homepage opens up, make an “F” and the most-popular social-networking site Facebook is up and running. These gestures are not default, users can customize any gesture in the form of words, symbols, smileys, numbers and associate them with any webpage. Simplicity at its best.

Another feature that gets the game going is Webzine. Well, the word is a marriage between Web and Magazine and this feature helps in moving away all advertisements cluttering the webpage and presents it in a very reader-friendly magazine like format. Developers say Webzine brings back elegance to the webpage.

Users had previously complained about how they missed tabbed browsing on their smartphone. Well, Dolphin browser eliminates that complaint by allowing users to open innumerable tabs at once. The browser also adds the functionality for users to switch between desktop mode and mobile mode. This is a great feature as all websites are not formatted for mobile viewing, and desktop mode certainly benefits tablet users.

An application today, no matter how productive, is rendered useless if it lacks social-networking support. Users on the Dolphin Browser can easily share webpages on Facebook and Twitter via the button on the top-right of the browser. There are other multiple ease-of-access options like bookmarks folder, speed-dial, smart address bar, sidebar, and the option to personalize the browser according to the users’ choice.

Overall, Dolphin Browser is one-of-the-most finest browsers in the market and packs in productivity to the gills. The iOS platform has a normal version for the iPhone and iPod Touch; and an HD version for the iPad. The Android app is a universal one and is available alongside Dolphin Browser mini.
