Social and chat apps are pretty common, but WeChat from Tencent Technology has many features that set it apart from the rest. With this app all your communication tools like messages, images and video calls are stored in one place, and all you need to do is create a user ID and you are set to go. The interface is quite intuitive so it’s easy to figure out what to do, and there are no ads too.

Just like other chat apps, you need to enter your phone number and provide your address book during the configuration. At the bottom of the WeChat screen are four buttons, Settings, Social, Contacts and Chat, all of which are self explanatory.

At the Chat screen you will see a list of your most recent conversations. Tap the Magic Wand at the right to start a new chat and you’re set. Another nice feature of WeChat is you can move it from your iOS to the PC via QR code scanning. Meanwhile the Social button allows you to find other WeChat users or go through your contacts.

If you want to change the configuration, go to Settings. There you will be able to adjust the preferences concerning privacy, update your profile and many other aspects of the app. While there are lot of things that you can change, WeChat’s simple interface makes it a breeze.

WeChat is one of the most versatile apps out there, making it very convenient to use. If you are not satisfied with your mobile chat client and looking for an update, this is worthy of a download.

Spark is a free, open source IM client with a full complement of features and even plugin support. Developed by Jive Software, the program is Java based so any system that supports it will be able to run this application. Among the application’s many features are voice calling, group chat, file transfers and more.

The program is easy to set up, and basically all you need to do is write your password, username and the server you want to connect to. The interface is pretty basic but you can customize some of the settings to suit your preferences. In addition, Spark also has support for emoticons and avatars and you can also define the colors. There really are a number of settings that you can change here, much more so than other IM clients.

The conversation window is similar to those in some IM clients so if you have used one before, the learning curve should be easy. Spark has also added some useful options like letting you view logs, taking a screenshot, send files to another user and view information about the person you are chatting with.

Spark even lets you invite other users for a conference. The Buzz tool will alert a person so they know you want to chat with them, and there is also a spell checker.

Spark is aimed primarily at organizations and businesses but that doesn’t mean casual users cannot use it for chatting. If you are tired of the usual messengers found on the Internet you may want to give this a try.

A content box can be opened by tapping. At the main page are the top story and a couple others. To read more, flip the pages. Stories can be shared in Twitter, LinkedIn or Facebook. Flipboard is very efficient in offering contents that you probably won’t need to go to the actual sites.
Content is updated on a regular basis. You’ll be able to see new content and images every time you open the app. There are nine boxes on the first screen and the second can hold a dozen. The app allows you to view contents in various ways. The web page can be displayed, or it can be an RSS feed or HTML 5-powered Flipboard Pages. The latter is for sites partnered with the company.

Flipboard also has a category for audio featuring TWiT, Slate Internet Radio and CMJ Network. Simply tap the + icon to add a feed.

Snapchat by Snapchat, Inc is an iPhone app that lets you send photos that will self destruct according to the time you specify. So if you want to send a photo that a recipient can view for say 6 seconds, set the timer to it. Send the picture and it will be visible on their device for 6 seconds before disappearing for good.

The app is very easy to use. When you first start it up, you will be prompted for a username and password for your account. As soon as your account is set up Snapchat will turn on your iPhone’s camera and you can take any photo you want.

The button in the center of the app is the shutter trigger and the icon next to it that resembles a 3D box lets you see the images that you sent out. On the right is a menu icon that lists your friends and other users of Snapchat. The menu icon also has links to the app’s Facebook and Twitter pages.

After taking a picture Snapchat will display the photo you took. Tapping the X icon will let you take more photos if you need to. The download icon allows you to see the image saved on your phone so all you need to do now is to press send.

You can use the Friends list on the menu to choose a recipient and a confirmation message will appear asking if you want to send the picture over to that recipient for x number of seconds. Next you will see the timer button and you can set it anywhere from 1 to 10 seconds before the picture you sent self destructs. Perfect for the night out on the town when you want to share some crazy photos with a friend but you dont want that friend to share it with everyone else.

Raptr is an instant messaging app that is aimed at video game players. Created by Dennis Fong, the application has features like game management, in-game overlay and you can also track your game achievements. This Windows application has support for Facebook Chat, Windows Live Messenger, GTalk and other chat programs. With it you can access several applications and import your accounts from Stream, PlayStation or Xbox Live.

With Raptr, you can share your best (and worst) gaming moments with your buddies and other players around the world. At the same time you can earn points as you play. The app also lets you see what games your friends are playing while giving you access to YouTube, Twitter and Facebook.

Aside from those features you also get access to news and other info related to gaming, or you can browse the net within the software. As you play the game, you can take screenshots or video of the game you are playing.

Aside from the desktop app, you can also create profiles on the Raptr website for sharing activities, reviews and other information related to gaming. Don’t forget to post your gaming feats on sites like Facebook, Twitter and Plurk.

It goes without saying that what makes games fun is the multiplayer aspect and the chance to play with your friends and other people from around the world. With Raptr, it becomes easier to stay in touch with them and let everyone know how good a gamer you really are.

iTalk Recorder Lite is a free app with full recording features. Created by Griffin Technology, it makes recording easy thanks to its intuitive interface. The app is also incredibly easy to use; to record hit the red button and press it again to stop recording.

iTalk Recorder also lets you add to recordings that exist with an ability to decide on the recording quality 44.10 kHz, 22.05, 11.025 sample rates) and organize the recordings as well. The higher the quality of the recording, the more space it will take up on your device, but the app itself has no such limitations; if you have the space on your iPhone you can record it.

iTalk Recorder uses the iPhone’s microphone, but even though it is small, the recording quality is top of the line. Of course this will also depend on the distance of your iPhone to whatever it is you are recording, but tests have shown that it is pretty good. After you have recorded data, you can listen to it, and you will notice how clear the recordings are.

It is true that the iPhone has a similar feature called Voice Memo, but it is nowhere near as flexible as this one, and unlike other free recorders for the iOS, iTalk Recorder allows you to record large files. Also, this app is much easier to use because of its interface.

iTalk Recorder can be a very useful app especially if you need to record a lot of stuff. Since it integrates well with the iPhone it is a suitable replacement for standalone audio recorders, plus this one is free.

It comes as no surprise that GateGuru by Mobility Apps LLC is one of the top rated apps for the iPhone and Android. Pertinent information like airport amenities, push notifications and data about flight is within your reach.

GateGuru has four modules namely Airports, High Flyers, Account and Trips. Most of the time you will be at the airport section. Its coverage is extensive; you can search the entire list, by city, airport code or location. Favorite amenities and airports can be bookmarked. You can even track your flights in real time.

You don’t need to establish an account. But those who travel a lot and use social networks will benefit by creating one. Once your account is established, it’s easy access to social media. Vital flight information is readily available. The reviews are among its most popular features. You can read what other people have to say about airports and their amenities. If you have never been to this or that airport and don’t know where to eat, just launch the app. You’ll find not just reviews but also tips.

The High Flyers gives you info on the high flyers around the world. There is also a feature that allows you to filter friends on Facebook. If you register, Tripit or KAYAK itineraries are sent to you automatically. The convenience this offers is immense.

GateGuru keeps your Facebook, Twitter, Gowalla or foursquare updated on your travels. Frequent flyers of course, can also take part in the High Flyers leaderboard program. It doesn’t matter if you have been traveling for years or a new one, this app can prove invaluable.

Offline Gmail by Google gives you access to your mail even without an Internet connection. At first this seems unnecessary; aren’t we always online with desktop computers, laptops, smartphones and Wi-Fi hotspots? Actually, it is necessary. Web connections are plentiful in the US and many other countries. But what if you’re traveling to a place or country where Web access is choppy?

With Offline Gmail, messages you move, delete or write are synchronized with your account when you next go online. Users can access sent messages prior to being offline. Messages you compose offline will be sent automatically once you are online.

The interface is very easy to use; emails are to the right, and you navigate at the left side. Put check boxes to label emails. They can also be arranged into groups. The interface is somewhat like those on the iPad. It is from the sidebar where you navigate. There is a search box included, perfect when you got a ton of email.

Offline Gmail requires a Gmail account. It works with Google Chrome only. The service is not compatible with Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail and other services. Even so, the benefits it provides makes it a pretty good app. Because you can compose emails even offline and have them sent later, you’ll be able to save time. Mail is automatically synced as long as Chrome is open. You don’t need to visit the Gmail website or even open Offline Gmail.

Some software offer these features, but they require configuration. Those programs also have to be opened to sync email; you don’t need to do either with Offline Gmail.

Cobook is an app that enhances your Mac Address Book. Basically what it does is make the information more accessible. With Cobook, the information is linked to Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. It is a totally enhanced, more powerful version of the Mac Address Book. You get more images and details as well.

Suppose you have an account in Google. Just sync it so the results are going to appear in Cobook. It means you can access the contents without going to the Address Book. With the app on the search bar, looking up contacts is a snap. New contacts can be added. Cobook can be placed over other applications. You can then copy email and contact information easily.

The software’s other strength comes from its intelligence. It knows what type of data you are entering and places them in the proper field. For instance, phone numbers are placed in their proper fields. Profiles have images and you also get immediate access to them.

Clicking the icon will cause a search box to pop up. Even better is the fact that it can search fields. What sets this apart from others is the fact that only relevant results are returned. That is, you will only get contacts, instead of a bunch of other data you don’t need.

When your data and contacts expand, ease of access and retrieval become paramount. Many desktop apps suffer from bloat, but Cobook is an exception.

This software is for anyone who frequently accesses their contacts. Remember that the contacts will be drawn from your Mac Address Book though. With the Mac’s native synching and Cobook’s many features, managing them will be easier.

Foursquare is an app that lets you record the places you’ve been to and share them with friends. Developed by Foursquare Labs, you will also get recommendations based on the places you and your friends have been to.

The app is not just a basic travel companion. It’s a tool for finding promos and sales close by. For the budget traveler, this can be a real lifesaver. Foursquare’s interface is simple enough that new users will have no problems learning. Clear explanations are given as to why they point to a particular recommendation.

While essentially a travel app, it is also a geo-location service / mobile / social device. It allows you to “check in” virtually to any place and post comments. But there’s no need to notify the site that you are virtually checked in. Comments posted by you and others can be read anytime.

Here’s an example: you can check into a dining place and post comments. You can state what to order, how the staff behaved, what bathroom stalls are cleanest and so on. Users who check in frequently will get badges and points. For instance, checking in to a place more than once gets you promoted to “mayor” of that site. It entitles you to discounts, promos and perks.

Explore, its recommendation engine, is simple to use. It comes with an adjustable slider so you know how far the recommended site is. Explore allows you to narrow the results based on your friends’ feedback, Foursquare recommendations or user check ins.

There is a To-Do list where you can save locations for future visits. You can set these up based on recommendations.
