Medscape is a medical resource app for the Android and iOS. Created by WebMD it is full of information that can be used by medical students, nurses, and anyone who wants to know anything and everything about health and medicine.

Medscape provides you with critical alerts and medical news in numerous specialty areas and you can search the app for specific topics and news, plus you can email and save articles you like or share them on Facebook. In addition, you can read the articles offline.

As far as content is concerned, Medscape is full of information. It has safety and prescribing info on over 8,000 brand and generic drugs, supplements, herbal medicine, OTC drugs, and there is also a drug interaction check and you can also save the drugs you search most often.

There are also a lot of special features here such as lactation and pregnancy guidelines, prices of drugs and images. Medscape also has a comprehensive database of diseases, procedures and conditions, with more than 4,000 articles full of images, videos and written by physicians and doctors. There are also hundreds of step by step procedure videos and more than a hundred protocols and tables.

To make Medscape easier to use, it is divided into several sections such as medication, treatment, workup, diagnoses, pathophysiology and many others. You will also find numerous medical formulas, classifications, scales, hundreds drug monographs, and each one has references and notes. In short, Medscape is a very useful app and one that you should carry around.

For students and writers, a thesaurus is indispensible. Fortunately, Artha is a free open source thesaurus that can meet those demands. Aside from having�chock-full�of features, this cross-platform software can be used offline. You don�t need an Internet connection to use it. So even if your connection goes down, you still have access to the program.

This thesaurus/dictionary is packed with information that word buffs and researchers will love. There is regular expression-based search, notifications and hot key lookup. When you look up a word, Artha can turn up its meaning, what part of speech it is and other useful information.

Some of the data that it can produce are domain terms, attributes and derivatives. The hot key lookup makes it easy to search meanings (the default hotkey is Ctrl+Alt+W). You can also use the notifications. The meanings pop up in balloons, allowing you to work with no interruptions. Artha accepts regular expression search; even if you don�t know a word�s complete spelling, you�ll find it.

Artha�s on the fly search makes it easy to filter terms. The program will display possible matches for what you are typing. There is a history showing what words you have looked up.

The history data can be removed if you want. They can also be saved of course. Artha also offers suggestions when you type. In case you misspell a word or typed incorrectly, the program will display the closest matches to what you typed.

Artha is available for Windows, GNU/Linux and Windows Phone 7. It has been successfully tested on Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8. It also runs on Xfee, KDE and GNOME.

iHandysoft is known for making a lot of useful apps for the iOS and Android, and iHandy Level Free is one of them. This nifty app turns your device into an alignment tool. It has no fancy features, but it does the job right.

IHandy Level can be used for a variety of household tasks like roof pitch calculations. It can also be used to measure walls, furniture, decors and take various angles. Students can rely on this to perform assorted measurements. Because iHandy Level uses the iPhone�s accelerometer, the results are spot-on. In fact the app can be used for measuring vehicle inclination.

The spirit level is in the middle of the circular shape. At the upper left is the measurement gauge. The goal is to get the figure as near 0 degrees as possible. The software is also pretty easy to use. The calibration button lets a user place the level at zero. The Hold button lets you position the level and set a straight line. Among the options at the Settings are bubble sensitivity adjustments and the option to disable the hold and calibration buttons.

To ensure the accuracy of the results, you should calibrate the app before using it. Just look for a flat surface. Place your phone or tablet on it. Tap the calibrate button. To calibrate in landscape mode, flip your device 90 degrees. That�s all it takes; iHandy Level is now ready for use.

RunKeeper is a personal trainer mobile app. Created by FitnessKeeper Inc, it also functions as a tracker for running, cycling, and biking. You can also use it for hiking and ski runs via your device�s GPS. The app is suitable for those taking morning jogs as well as serious runners. It�s a nice free app for checking your lap times too.

RunKeeper tracks your total miles run and monitors your pace. Using the app you�ll be able to progress easily. The fitness app has plenty of features for beginner and advanced fitness enthusiasts. New runners will appreciate the coaching feature. When turned on, it will tell you how far you have run, your present time and your current pace. If you want to run with no interruptions, just turn it off.

One of the coolest features of RunKeeper is you can play and manage music. Your music collection can be shuffled. You can create playlists from within the app. This is great for runners who don�t like switching apps just to listen to music.

In spite of its name, the app isn�t just for runners. Cyclists, skiers, swimmers and hikers can use it to track their progress. To use, select the right activity from the screen. RunKeeper will now track your progress. The app uses GPS by default. If you�re on the treadmill or there�s no GPS signal, change the input type to manual.

Cartes du Ciel (or Sky Chart) is an astronomy program. Created by Patrick Chevalley, it is a powerful planetarium with features similar to commercially available software. Cartes du Ciel precisely shows the placements of stars. Information on several stars are also provided. But it offers a lot more.

It can give you information on planets, asteroids, nebulae, galaxies and comets. The software supports many catalogs including Guide Star and Tycho. Other catalogs can be used so you can see thousands of stars.

Standard planetarium features are built-in. You can view the sky in different ways. There are controls for zooming in. Colored stars make them easier to identify. The interface isn�t flashy, but it is fairly easy to learn. There are many features here that will please advanced and novice users. If you want to locate more stars, you can get the other catalogs on their website. If you are really serious about astronomy, you can get the PPMXL catalog (magnitude 20).

Cartes du Ciel can compute ephemerides for lunar and solar eclipses between two dates. You can calculate ephemerides for asteroids, the sun, comets and the moon. The software also has a variable observer that can gauge maxima and minima for various stars. The software is capable of handling a computerized telescope mount.

Next to the planetarium window are images of various deep space objects. It also has a Quick Locate feature. Simply choose the star you want to examine. It will show up instantly. The multiple eyepiece display is also useful. After defining the eyepiece view, you can show them on the map as circles simultaneously.

Zotero is open source software for academic research. It is primarily aimed at professionals and students. But anyone who has to do research will find the program handy. Zotero gathers your materials in one place which you can then search and edit. The software is developed by the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media.

The software allows you to add webpage snapshots, videos, images, audio files, PDFs and other files. Your texts are indexed so search results are quick. Apart from colleting research materials, you will be able to manage bibliographic data.

Zotero has several features designed to make your work easier. There are tools for managing bibliographies, footnotes, in-text citations and syncing online. There is web browser integration too. You can integrate it with NeoOffice, OpenOffice.org Writer, LibreOffice and Microsoft Word.

When you are on websites like Wikipedia, Google Docs, Google Scholar etc, Zotero displays an icon when you are looking at a book or article. Click the icon to save the entire reference data to your library. You can also save full text PDF copies of academic text. Copies of web pages can be saved for reference too.

Once you have all your materials, you can add attachments, tags and notes. Part of your library info can be saved as bibliographies with full formatting. You can save rich text memos and bibliographies as HTML. Zotero lets you make bibliographies and citations via word processor plug-ins. You can prepare your own citation designs.

There are two versions of the software. One is standalone for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. The other is an add-on for Firefox. Both are available on the download link.

Think of Mendeley Desktop as a social network for serious academic researchers and professionals. By joining the network you can review, critique, edit and post academic research. It is not just an interactive network; it is a research tool and reference manager.

To use Mendeley, you need to sign up for a free account. Your first name, last name and email address are required. You can download the free software after registration is complete. There is a setup wizard to guide you. You will receive a confirmation email. Click and you will gain access to the Dashboard. From the Dashboard you can go to People, Groups, My Library Papers and the other options.

You can start using it. You can add your PDF files, research papers and notes. The interface makes it easy to use all the tools at your disposal. On the network you will have access to materials posted by your fellow researchers, technical databases, scientific and medical papers.

Mendeley makes it easy to share information with other researchers. Information is synced on mobile and desktop computers. The program is easy to use thanks to its navigation panel and toolbars. The interface is similar to an email client. You can use them to sync data and folders.

The toolbar buttons consist of Sync Library, Create Folder and Add Documents, all of which are self-explanatory. You can drag and drop documents for easy arrangements. When you launch the software, you’ll see a dark background with uniquely shaped objects moving around. These represent microscopic organisms. These groups symbolize cells that appear in nature and in living organisms.

You can discover a lot from Biogenesis by just watching the simulation. You will see how bacterial evolution mechanisms work. Biological events like photosynthesis and mutations are graphically shown. This is definitely more interesting than reading a textbook.

Click an organism and get real-time data about it. The bottom screen will display vital information about the selected one: its mass, energy, whether it has bacterial gene infection and whether it is a child or first generation paren. The age is displayed as well.

Probably the coolest feature about Biogenesis is you can select what organisms to feed. You decide what cells multiply and grow. iBooks Author is a simple and easy to use program for Mac that helps writers put together their own book. Even though almost anyone can use it, the program is specifically geared towards educators or textbook makers who might be interested in creating their own interactive manuals for class or projects.

Despite being a small application, it’s packed with a good number of features. For one, you can immediately start using it. The interface allows you to choose from several templates and you can begin creating your book right away. If you’re familiar with using Keynote, the interface isn’t any different.

Thanks to its capacity to support widgets, it can become a great multimedia platform. Users can add 3D images or other interactive items onto it. Animation, pop-ups, zoom functions, embedded movies or picture galleries or even creating short quizzes is possible within the app. It also provides nice compatibility, allowing users to import works from Word or Pages directly.

So for all the Know-It-All fans here is the official Khan app for the iPad, one of the best educational offering till date to hit the iOS scene.

Developed by the Khan Academy team, timely volunteers and part-time contributors, the app is a class apart and surely does what only can leave the users imagination in awe.

If you are puzzled about what Khan Academy can do, well, it can do almost anything. The app can easily educate users on a vast variety of topics, which range from K-12 math to algebra, biology to chemistry, humanities to finance. As the users knowledge of topics might get exhausted, the app will keep churning out the best answers and solution.

The best part of the app, however, is that all the basic of every topic you might need are covered. So, if you are a newbie to the world of algebra and basics is what you need to brush-up on, then this app is the solution to all your questions. One could say that the app has three principles at its core 1) Discover, 2) Learn Fundamentals and 3) Master.

Overall, the app is one-of-the-finest educational apps available on the iOS platform. Moreover, the app is not targeted at just one group of specific users, it is more universal in approach and does what it says. It deserves a 5-out-of-5 rating for sure.
