Clementine is a free music player. The application is based on the Amarok player 1.4 but has a lot of new features. It is a music CD player, Internet radio and mp3 tag editor. Plus a lot more.

Clementine’s interface is basic but very workable. Users who don’t like a lot of information thrown at them will like its appearance. You won’t find a music shop link here. The program is built around the user. The main window consists of a big playlist. At its left are tabs vertically set. You will find categories like artist info, song info, devices, Internet, files and library.

Players start by importing their files in the playlist. You can then gain access to other options. You can save music streaming or from your local drives. The right click menu provides you access to a song’s metadata information. Edit Track information allows you to change the data there. Players can connect to the MusicBrainz online service to look for any missing data.

Fans of Internet radio can tune in to online streams like SKY.fm, Jamendo, Magnatune, SomaFM, Last.fm, Grooveshark and Spotify. These services have different features though.

Clementine’s music player aspect has visualizations, a queue manager, a cover manager and an equalizer. Also useful feature is the Transcode Music function. This helps a user save certain files for devices like a USB player, the iPod or iPhone.

Clementine’s music player has numerous settings that can be adjusted. The Preferences menu allows you to set keyboard shortcuts, Wii remote settings and song transitions. You can also change network settings, as well. The application can be integrated with Unity Dash.

Pinnacle Studios has received a handful of criticism for limited functionality of its software, but things seem to have changed with VideoSpin. VideoSpin is a free video-editing software that offers plenty of options for beginner editors. This video-editor performs really well in comparison to its other free counterparts, making this a perfect choice for casual use.

This obviously is no match to the full-paid editors, but does a decently good job by providing options like transitions, various codec supports, output of clips for Video networking sites such as Youtube, Metacafe, just to name a few.

VideoSpin starts of as a trial software on the first download with an evaluation period of 15 days. Within the trial period, all features of the software are unlocked and gives users the ability to output video files in DivX, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, AVI, Flash, Real, and MPEG-1 formats, further allowing for storage of files on a user specified memory location. VideoSpin also packs in functions such as enhancing films, uploading images, graphics, blending effects, multiple transitions format, ability to add text (various formats), adding sound files and under-laying videos with music just to name just a few. The UI is very clean and uncluttered and has a feel of the Final Cut Pro.

At the end of the specified trial-period, users can continue using the software minus the ability to output videos in DivX, MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 format. So users have the option to choose from AVI, Flash, Real, and MPEG-1 codec. Also, the interface size gets fixed, and full-screen mode goes for a toss. Chances are you won’t need any of them, but if you will, the company is making money by providing them to you.

Comparing it to the Adobe Premier Express online editor, I used simultaneously to the Pinnacle VideoSpin, the former forced a dozen of limitations on the user. Unlike other video-editing suites, the hardware demands of VideoSpin are fairly moderate and the software would basically run on every recent machine.

If you are the type who likes casual editing and finds Windows Movie Maker a tad bit boring, VideoSpin from Pinnacle is the perfect bedroom Video-editing solution you can get, without burning a hole in your pocket, and even when the trial period ends the functionality offered by the software should suffice any beginner.

Audacity is an user-friendly, free & open source audio editor. It is currently available for almost all operating systems, including Windows, Mac OS X, GNU/Linux and others. The software gets great reviews and ranks up there with some of the best in it’s genre because of it’s “clean interface, excellent features, and support for 32-bit floating-point audio” (and a great price if I may add). With Audacity, you can easily record/import audio, edit the files, add effects, and export to your desired file format.

Audacity has quite a few build-in sound effects already, but if that’s not enough for you there are multiple plug-ins already available to expand the capability for this software. Some of the things I found very useful:
– unlimited undo & redo (love it!)
– the ability to mix tracks with different sample rates or formats (and have Audacity convert them automatically in real time)
– the Plot Spectrum command (to analyze the frequency)
– the Beat Analyzer (which helps you determine the beats per minute).
Even if you are not planning to become a DJ any time soon, this app may prove useful to plug your voice over a song, cut your own cellphone ringtones or even convert your old audio tapes to digital formats. The interface is not overly pretty, but definitely very clean and useful.
