Autodesk 123D Design

123D Design is a desktop and iPad 3D modeler. Unlike other 3D programs, you don’t need a lot of experience to create high quality objects. It is for people who have always wanted to make cool 3D art but don’t have the skills to use complicated (and expensive) software.

Created by Autodesk, you’ll be able to make 3D designs from scratch. This CAD program has some elements similar to those of other Autodesk software. Tools like edge tweaking, push, pull patterning and symmetry turn your projects into realistic looking models.

There are also thousands of free 3D models on their website. Modeling is direct. Clicking the feature will make the tools available. Right click an object and you will see the Marking Menu. Useful tools are available there. The most important are at the circle.

You can zoom and pan to get more details. You can switch perspectives, necessary when creating complex objects. It’s got a movable toolbar and a Feature Browser. Nodes of your model are displayed here. You can edit each node, making it similar to Autodesk Inventor.

Users can hide/show annotation and origin planes. Sub features can be displayed or hidden with the Toggle Features icon. To hide the Feature Browser, click the Cross. Sketches can be used to produce solids, but they won’t be associative to it.

Autodesk 123D is just one of the 3D apps in the 123D family. The other products include 123D Make, which creates 3D models from 2D slices, Sculpt, a 3D modeler for iPad and Catch, a mobile app that creates 3D models from pictures. Each one is a standalone application.

Pencil Sketch is one of the most interesting graphics / photography apps for Android. Created by Dumpling Sandwich, it will transform any picture into a pencil sketch.

However, this “sketch” is beautiful and well polished. It doesn’t matter if you can only draw stick figures; with this program you’ll end up with professional looking pencil drawings. All you have to do is select a picture stored on your phone gallery. Or you can take one with your camera. With a single click you’ll end up with a detailed looking sketch.

Even professional artists will get inspired with the results. Even if you’re not an artist, the results might just inspire you to become one. The program’s simplicity makes it suitable for anyone. When you load a picture, numerous options allow you to fine tune the result, including color and original mode. Once you are satisfied with the results, you can save it.

That is basically all that Pencil Sketch does, but it is good at it. The program is compact so it is quick to download. Installation is painless, and of course it is free. The nice thing about Pencil Sketch is that it works very smoothly. It doesn’t matter how complicated an image is; the app will produce a detailed sketch.

Pencil Sketch is a really fun app. You can literally turn thousands of photos into dramatic looking artworks. You can also put these pictures on your website or enhance them with a photo editor. At the very least, it can be very amusing.

123D Catch

123D Catch by Autodesk gives you the power to create 3D models of practically anything. Instead of sculpting or editing meshes, Catch takes a simpler approach. Simply take pictures of an object from various angles. Load these into the program and it will turn the images into a 3D object.

A video tutorial appears when you first start the app. You will then see some preloaded samples. The I symbol has four options: About, Help, Getting Started and Support. Before you take pictures, try the 3D samples first so you know how to move an object. You can pan, rotate and scale objects.

Clicking the New Capture Button will start a tutorial when you launch the app for the first time. Finish the tutorial. Take a picture by pressing the camera button. The app keeps track of how images you�ve taken. Press Finish Capture when you�re done.

The images will be sent to Autodesk�s servers where they will be transformed into 3D and then sent back to your iPad when modeling and rendering is complete. The time it takes depends on the number of photos you took.

This is really the app�s best feature. If you�re familiar with 3D software, you know how resource intensive the process can be. Rather than force your iPad to do the work, Autodesk servers will do it instead. Catch is free, but you must have an account of some sort. It can be an account in Google, Yahoo!, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn etc.

123D Catch is part of the 123D family. The other apps include Sculpt, Make and 123D.

DrawCast

Drawcast is an app that allows you to draw and paint on your iOS device. Created by Daniel Cota, the app has support for various colors, zooming in and out, has an undo feature and cover up any mistakes you make with an eraser. While it has a lot of features, anyone who has used painting apps before will find it easy to use.

Compatible with nearly all iOS devices, you can use its paint brush to select from different colors and modify the paint brush size. The fact that you can zoom in helps with the editing. Drawcast also has an eyedropper tool to help you select colors. Once you have chosen the color and adjusted the brush size, you can start painting away.

Once you are finished drawing you can share it with your friends via Twitter or Facebook. Another nice feature in Drawcast is it allows you to import photos from your device and edit them. If you�re making a detailed drawing you can switch to full screen mode so you can see everything. Obviously this would work better with the iPad but the app looks all right on the iPhone.

There is no limit to the size of your drawing; the only limitation is the size of your hard drive. Drawcast is frequently updated so new features are always being added. Now the app has multiple undo and has support for layers.

For anyone who wants to make quick doodles or improve your drawing, this is the app for you. Even if you don�t consider yourself much of an artist, sketching with Drawcast can be a lot of fun.

Wings 3D

Mention 3D graphics and people think of programs that cost in the thousands of dollars. However, Wings 3D is a powerful modeler that is totally free. It was created by Bj�rn Gustavsson, Dan Gudmundsson and the rest of the Wings 3D Development Team.

It�s a sophisticated program, capable of modeling human figures, creatures, vehicles, and so on. The program uses a graphical interface instead of icons. You use the keyboard and mouse to change an object�s geometry. Four selection modes are available: Body, Face, Edge and Vertex. Make no mistake about it; Wings 3D has a lot of tools. Each mode comes with its own set of modelers and editors. Its auto-UV feature makes adding textures easy.

There are a lot of mesh and selection tools plus lights, materials and colors. You can export objects as OBJ and other popular formats. Standard features include weld, cut, bridge, bevel, extrude and rotate among others. Advanced features include inset, shear, bend, intersect, circularize etc. You can use its Smooth Preview to assess your model. Other advanced tools like sculpt, tweak and Virtual Mirror are perfect for modeling symmetrical objects.

There are a lot of options, but you can configure its interface. You will find more commands with its right-click menus. Keep your cursor over the mouse over a menu, a brief explanation will pop up. It can import ndo, 3ds, ai, .lwo/.lxo, .obj and other popular formats. You can export to 3ds, ai, obj, pov and many others.

Wings 3D is available for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux. It is continuously being updated. The software uses OpenGL for rendering. However you can export and render with YafRay, POV-Ray and other software.

Mirrorgram

There are a ton of photo apps for the iPhone, but Mirrorgram by StageBloc Inc. is different from the rest. With Mirrorgram, you can add a mirror image to any object in the iPhone�s camera lens, but this isn�t just a simple mirroring trick as it can produce stunning kaleidoscope-like images. The app isn�t just free, but is also easy to use and you see what�s happening in real time.

To use, just press the M or gesture on the display, and you can make adjustments to the angles. After you have the image right, you can jazz it up by adding some special effects like black and white, blurring, a �grungy� look, high contrast and a lot more. By using one of these filters your image will be dramatically enhanced. There are other extra filters you can purchase, but the ones included in the app (which is compatible with the iPad) are more�than enough.

There are other nice features on the app, such as letting you adjust the focal point and angles even after snapping the photo, making it easy to make some adjustments. There are a lot of other interesting features bundled in, and you�ll have fun exploring the app. The fact that it is free means you don�t lose anything by trying it. Because it is so easy to use, you won�t have any problems experimenting with images.

Once you�re done editing the image, you can share it with your friends by exporting the file to Instagram where you can manipulate it even more. You can also add captions to the pictures and share it at StageBloc, Twitter or Facebook.

BRL-CAD

BRL CAD is a 3D modeling, CSG (constructive solid geometry) system. Developed by Mike Muuss, it is a complete package with tools for signal and image processing. At the same time, there is support for scripting and frame buffer as well. The vast number of tools built in mean you won�t have to install other programs for editing.

The program also has its own tools for geometric analysis, graphics rendering (with ray trace support) and an interactive geometry editor. Because it has a lot of features, the program can be used for creating different types of graphics, and it can also be used for electromagnetic and ballistic analyses as well.

If you are familiar with CAD, this one should not be too difficult to learn. In fact it is easier to learn as the package contains all the utilities, tools, libraries you will need to manipulate files and data, ray trace and create objects.

What sets BRL CAD apart from other 3D modelers is that it relies on Constructive Solid Geometry instead of Boundary Representation. Because of this feature, the software is capable of simulating physical phenomena.

Art of Illusion is a free 3D open source program for Windows, the Mac and Linux. Created by Peter Eastman, it is powerful enough for professional users, but if you are new to 3D fear not because there are a lot of tutorials, wizards and help files to get you started. With this program, you�ll be creating photo realistic images in no time.

The key here is the program�s interface as it is very easy to understand and most importantly is customizable. If you have used other 3D programs before, the interface will look very familiar, with four windows displaying the side, front, back and camera views. Meanwhile, the Objects Property Panel and the Objects List are there to help you manage more complex scenes.

Art of Illusion comes with a complete set of tools for refining, manipulating, rendering and creating 3D objects. Lego Digital Designer is a free program from Lego that allows you to play and build Lego on your computer. With this program you can build anything your mind conceives, the only difference from the real thing is that you don�t have to pay for it. It�s a lot of fun, and just as cool as playing with �real� bricks.

The software works like other design/graphics programs for Mac and Windows, as it allows you to connect bricks to each other, rotate them in any direction, turn your viewpoint 360 degrees and zoom in and out. Just like real with Lego you can take out the hinges so you can try different ways to put those pieces together.

All the basic Lego bricks are here, as well as other components like infrared sensors, jet engines and many more. A nice feature in Lego Digital Designer is the Brick Palette as it helps you manage those bricks as soon as they become numerous.
