Vox is a small but powerful music player for Mac (OS X or higher). Published by AleNofx, the program supports a variety of media files; these include XM, MOD and WAV. Vox also comes with the support for AIFF, lossless, OGG, mp3, and FLAC files next to many handy features built in.

Vox can also play Game Music and AAC, and it even has numerous cool effects built in like echo, pitch shift, and time stretch. In addition the software has reverb and a fully functional equalizer so you can make adjustments to the sound.

While it does have a lot of features, the interface and window are well laid out. As a lot of music players have evolved to become all in one media apps, Vox does only one thing, and that is play music.

Unlike other music players for Mac, Vox’s 10 band equalizer is at par with commercial media apps, and you can also chain effects. Of all the effects built in, one of the most interesting is definitely time stretch, as it can speed up tracks without affecting the pitch. It supports drag and drop so you can easily rearrange the tracks on your playlist.

There are a lot of free music players for the Mac but the problem with those is they are very large and take a long time to download. Vox on the other hand, is less than 10 MB yet comes packed with a lot of practical features. If you’re not in the mood for long downloads, then give this a try.

There are many iTunes managers around, but Bowtie has many features that set it apart from other utilities, being very easy to use for one. Created by 13Bold, it sports standard buttons for playback and also a host of customizable keyboard shortcuts, aside from many other features.

Bowtie also makes it easy to perform other tasks like upping or lowering a track’s rating, changing the volume, and you can also have the app stay visible or function like your normal Mac window.

One of the nice things about Bowtie though, is that it is skinnable, giving you control over the appearance of the controls. The themes are extremely varied, with some displaying album art and others more simple. Some of the fancier skins even come with animations and give you some control over the track you are playing.

There are a lot of themes available with more being made, and every single one can be downloaded from within the program. Once you have downloaded a theme, it takes just one click to apply it. The built-in keyboard shortcuts make Bowtie a great tool to use in managing iTunes, and while it may not be as fancy as other applications out there, it does the job right. Installing the app is a breeze, and it won’t take long before you get accustomed to it.

Bowtie doesn’t just offer complete functionality in terms of managing iTunes, but the many themes built in make it a nice program to have around. If you are having trouble managing your stuff on iTunes, Bowtie can help you out.

Planetary is a free music visualizer for the iPad. Listening to music on your tablet involves scrolling through playlists and staring every now and then at album art. With this free app from Bloom Studio the artists and albums in your music library are displayed as stars floating in the cosmos. It is in short, unique and visually arresting.

With a few swipes and taps you can change the arrangement of the stars, and it is a lot of fun just tweaking around the settings and watching the galaxy spin around slowly. At the bottom of the display are additional controls allowing you to filter by playlists or artists, and if you dig deeper into the settings you will be able to make use of the iPad gyroscope that allows for even greater interaction with the universe in your device.

Almost everything here can be customized and if you want to remove the planetary orbit lines and text labels you can do so with ease. Every song is represented as a moon, each album is a planet and each artist is a star. The more songs you have in your library, the more stars will be displayed. But you can limit the number to be displayed so the screen doesn’t appear too crowded. The more often you play a song, the large its moon becomes.

The fact of the matter is that it is hard to put into words just how visually stunning Planetary for the iPad is. If you love music and want some gorgeous visuals to go along with it, you can’t do without this. It’s free so there no reason not to check it out.

Ardour is a free audio workstation for Linux and the Mac. Primarily the creation of Paul Davis, it is quite simply one of the most powerful audio software around. It has a whole bunch of features such as unlimited buses and audio racks, MDI CC control, precision algorithms for EQ and more. In fact its recording capability is only limited by your hardware.

If you use it to record on exiting material the program can perform latency compensation and it can monitor using hardware, and this feature allows you to apply plugins to Ardour and see the effects in real time. Its anything to anywhere routing allows for support of unlimited track, and you can also automate panning as well as plugin parameters.

Adour also has extensive editing capabilities such as time stretching, splitting and dragging, and it also comes with a beat detector and cross fade editor. There are no limits to its redo/undo, and you can use it for audio mastering too.

Furthermore, Ardour conforms to industry standards so there will be no compatibility problems when you run it. You can also import or export entire sessions or just parts of it, as it has a database manager built in. Other notable features include MIDI level machine control, no copy-protection and 32 bit floating point for the audio path.

This is just an overview of the things that you can do on Ardour. If you’re looking for a free powerful audio editor this is the one to get. It is powerful and as far as learning curves go it isn’t that steep either.

Aweditorium for the iPad redefines your digital music experience. This app from thesixtyone combines all content related to an indie artist –interviews, high res video, lyrics photos – and brings them all together. You get all the info you want from the artist while listening to their songs.

If you love indie music or are on the lookout for the newest bands, Aweditorium is a must. The app is incredibly easy to use; you just choose an artist from the picture grid. Once you have made a choice, you’ll get to listen to one of their tracks, see links to their videos, dig up biographical facts, or just read the lyrics to their songs. What makes the app exceptional is the fact that it’s all DIY. All the information is provided by the artist or band, not by a big record company.

This is really what makes Aweditorium such a blast; part of the fun is going through the different pictures and finding those exceptional artists. But just to make sure that quality artists are chosen, there’s a screening process. Alternative rock is the best represented but you’ll hear music from other genres here as well.

If you find an indie artist that you particularly like, you can tweet them to your friends or buy their songs. Aweditorium is a unique app, perfect if you want to learn all about the wonderful world of indie music. Even if you don’t know much about indie music, Aweditorium will get you started.

As an open source video and music player, Miro has a lot in common with other free players. But it goes beyond what the usual freeware offers. Aside from managing audio and video, it also doubles as an audio/video shopping center.

Miro allows users to import their libraries from iTunes. There is support for Android syncing. If you are looking for the iTunes equivalent in Android devices, this is it. Aside from supporting all popular video and audio formats, you can download or subscribe to podcasts.

If you are using iTunes, Miro’s interface will be familiar. There is a section for managing music files, videos and other devices hooked up. If you want to buy or download something, Google Play and the AppStore are right there too. After you download a file, it’s just a few clicks away to sync them.

Also included on the left pane are your playlists, a video search tool, sources and podcasts. If you are playing videos, the playback controls will be at the bottom. Miro is also compatible with Kindle Fire. It also syncs with tablets. With this app, you can update all devices quickly.

For many people though, the biggest benefit is Miro’s ability to do different things. You don’t have to leave the program to buy or download. You can stay in and let it sync files as you manage them. You don’t need to install a YouTube downloader because the program can do it. If two Miro apps are on a network, you’ll be able to share music and videos.

Miro is cross-platform so it can run on Windows, Mac and Linux.

Mp3tag is an application used for metadata editing. APE, Vorbis comments and ID3 of various audio formats are supported. The program is very popular due to its versatility.

Basic functions include playlist creation and export/import tag information. Mp3tag can replace words or characters on filenames and tags. File names can be changed using tag data. The software collects tag information on compact discs and files. Online database lookups is also supported.

Mp3tag is compact, but it is full-featured. There is support for ID3v2.4 with UTF-8, UTF-16) and ID3v2.3 (ISO-8859-1. It is possible to import tag data at a local freedb database or web based databases. Users can export tag data to formats such as xml, csv, rtf and html.

Other useful features are regular expressions, filename and tag formatting, tag importing from filenames, taking out the tag from many files or select parts. Mp3tag provides support for recursive subfolders, auto playlist creation and embedded cover art support.

The list of features goes on; you can add comments to files simultaneously, there is support for Unicode, APEv2- Vorbis and tags and writing to ID3v1.1 and ID3v2. Another reason for the editor’s popularity is its computability with a wide array of file formats. These include WavPack (wv), Windows Media Audio (wma), True Audio (tta), Ogg Vorbis (ogg), Musepack (mpc) and MPEG-4 (mp4 / m4a / m4b / iTunes. The program also supports Mpeg Layer 3 (mp3), Advanced Audio Coding (aac) and many others.

All of these features make it a very useful and powerful tag editor. You cannot beat the price (free) and the number of features. The interface is very simple, so even a novice will learn their way around quickly.

iHeartRadio is more than an online radio. It is a free, complete digital service from Clear Channel Management Services. There are over 1500 stations to choose from. You can search stations by format, zip or state. One of its nicest features is you can build a custom station based on songs or artists. You can also review your “likes” and history, read song lyrics and get information about the songwriter. Your favorite stations can be shared, including the ones you make.

iHeartRadio’s Account settings lets you return to the last setting you were in. Parents have the option of restricting access to objectionable content via Custom Radio. After you have “liked” iHeartRadio, the program will offer suggestions for the user.

You can listen to these or create a new station. Thanks to Facebook integration, you’ll be able to post comments about the songs being played on your custom station. You can also check out what your friends are listening to.

As can be expected, music genre choices are vast; rock, urban, country, pop, etc are all available. In the mobile version, you just press the “scan” button to browse stations. With your smartphone, creating custom stations is easy.

When you choose an artist, the station will pick other artists who sound just like them. Their catalog includes hundreds of thousands of artists and millions of songs. Its Discovery Tuner gives you control over the content.

SoundHound is a music recognition / music search engine app. Available for the iOS, Windows Phone and Android, it can identify songs you are playing, humming or singing. If that’s not enough, you can type or just mention the artist or song and it will work. These features set it apart from other music recognition apps.

Thanks to its ‘Sound2Sound’ technology, SoundHound can recognize a song quickly, even a poorly hummed tune. Not only does the app name the song or artist; you also get links to iTunes and YouTube. The lyrics are shown as well as ringtones. You can also get song recommendations as well.

LiveLyrics shows the lyrics in sync with the song being played. Double tap the lyrics and the song will jump to those lyrics. Songs in your iPod can be played on your iPhone. The lyrics are displayed automatically as soon as the song plays. Of all its features though, the speed is the most impressive. It’s uncanny how it responds in just a few seconds.

The app is frequently updated. The newest version features have Twitter and Facebook updates in real time. Just tap the name of your favorite artist or band and you’ll get the latest scoop. Other features include previews, optional auto-sharing and sharing on Twitter and Facebook.

SoundHound also comes with built-in information about artists and lyrics. Beautifully designed and free, it’s an app you can rely on for those times when that song’s title is just on the tip of your tongue.

SoundHound runs on the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch 3rd generation. Versions for Android and Windows Phone are also available. For best results, you need 3G or Wi-Fi Internet connections. The speed of your connection determines how quickly the app can respond to your song queries.

Clementine’s interface is basic but very workable. Users who don’t like a lot of information thrown at them will like its appearance. You won’t find a music shop link here. The program is built around the user. The main window consists of a big playlist. At its left are tabs vertically set. You will find categories like artist info, song info, devices, Internet, files and library.

Players start by importing their files in the playlist. You can then gain access to other options. You can save music streaming or from your local drives. The right click menu provides you access to a song’s metadata information. Edit Track information allows you to change the data there. Players can connect to the MusicBrainz online service to look for any missing data.

Fans of Internet radio can tune in to online streams like SKY.fm, Jamendo, Magnatune, SomaFM, Last.fm, Grooveshark and Spotify. These services have different features though.

Clementine’s music player aspect has visualizations, a queue manager, a cover manager and an equalizer. Also useful feature is the Transcode Music function. This helps a user save certain files for devices like a USB player, the iPod or iPhone.

Clementine’s music player has numerous settings that can be adjusted. The Preferences menu allows you to set keyboard shortcuts, Wii remote settings and song transitions. You can also change network settings, as well. The application can be integrated with Unity Dash.
