NameChanger for Mac is a free program that makes it easy to rename multiple files, a chore that usually takes forever to do. This application is developed by MRR Software, and it is very easy to use. The latest version has support for Regular Expressions, as well as the ability to sort via the EXF date.

NameChanger is very easy to set up, and using it is a no-brainer. Just drag the files to the app or on the interface. You will see the files’ original file names clearly, while the commands and options for changing the names are also clearly laid out. Among the options in the application are Replace All Occurrences, Replace Last or First Occurrence, Regular Expression and Character Removal.

NameChanger also has the following options: Sequence, Date, Wildcard, Prepend and Append. The nice thing about this program is that as you start changing names, the new filenames will show up in the column labeled “Renamed Filename”, allowing you to get a good look at the name as compared to the old one.

The rows update in real time so you see clearly what is happening. After you click the Rename button, all the files that you edited will be shown, and any files that for any reason could be modified will be displayed as well. That’s pretty much all you need to do.

NameChanger for Mac does only one thing, and that is change names. But it does the job well. Changing file names is something that you likely often do, so this is definitely worth at least a try.

Find My iPhone for the iPad and iPhone does exactly that, help you find your device if it is lost. It’s one of those apps from Apple you never want to use but will want to have around. Losing your device isn’t just a matter of money of course, as all your personal and business data is stored there as well.

To use this app you need to create an iCloud Account and get an Apple ID. When you turn Find My iPhone on, it will transmit your device’s geo-location data at regular intervals to your servers. This allows you to find your device from your web browser or any other device that lets you log in.

Note that some versions of iOS have this installed by default but others don’t. And in those versions where it is installed, it is not turned on by default.

You can also use Find My iPhone to locate other devices. To do this just launch Find My iPhone and type in your password and Apple ID. A screen will pop up and the last location reported for devices linked to your account will show up. Actually the app doesn’t just show you the location of those devices but allows you to track them almost in real time, so you can it on the move.

Assuming the worst and your tablet or phone is stolen, you can use the app to lock it with a code. In addition you can display a phone number on it. You also have the option to erase all the data on the device so they can’t get hold of the data.

Offline Gmail by Google gives you access to your mail even without an Internet connection. At first this seems unnecessary; aren’t we always online with desktop computers, laptops, smartphones and Wi-Fi hotspots? Actually, it is necessary. Web connections are plentiful in the US and many other countries. But what if you’re traveling to a place or country where Web access is choppy?

With Offline Gmail, messages you move, delete or write are synchronized with your account when you next go online. Users can access sent messages prior to being offline. Messages you compose offline will be sent automatically once you are online.

The interface is very easy to use; emails are to the right, and you navigate at the left side. Put check boxes to label emails. They can also be arranged into groups. The interface is somewhat like those on the iPad. It is from the sidebar where you navigate. There is a search box included, perfect when you got a ton of email.

Offline Gmail requires a Gmail account. It works with Google Chrome only. The service is not compatible with Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail and other services. Even so, the benefits it provides makes it a pretty good app. Because you can compose emails even offline and have them sent later, you’ll be able to save time. Mail is automatically synced as long as Chrome is open. You don’t need to visit the Gmail website or even open Offline Gmail.

Some software offer these features, but they require configuration. Those programs also have to be opened to sync email; you don’t need to do either with Offline Gmail.

iHandysoft is known for making a lot of useful apps for the iOS and Android, and iHandy Level Free is one of them. This nifty app turns your device into an alignment tool. It has no fancy features, but it does the job right.

IHandy Level can be used for a variety of household tasks like roof pitch calculations. It can also be used to measure walls, furniture, decors and take various angles. Students can rely on this to perform assorted measurements. Because iHandy Level uses the iPhone’s accelerometer, the results are spot-on. In fact the app can be used for measuring vehicle inclination.

The spirit level is in the middle of the circular shape. At the upper left is the measurement gauge. The goal is to get the figure as near 0 degrees as possible. The software is also pretty easy to use. The calibration button lets a user place the level at zero. The Hold button lets you position the level and set a straight line. Among the options at the Settings are bubble sensitivity adjustments and the option to disable the hold and calibration buttons.

To ensure the accuracy of the results, you should calibrate the app before using it. Just look for a flat surface. Place your phone or tablet on it. Tap the calibrate button. To calibrate in landscape mode, flip your device 90 degrees. That’s all it takes; iHandy Level is now ready for use.

iHandy Level Free is a no-frills app. But it is highly recommended for anyone who needs to arrange shelves, put a picture frame or do anything that requires precision.

UltraDefrag doesn’t have a flashy interface, but it is effective as far as free defraggers go. It was created by the UltraDefrag development team as an open source alternative to other commercial defragging utilities. The default interface is graphical, but there is a command line option.

This utility is available in 32 and 64 bit versions, so choose the right one for your system. You can run it as Windows boots up or you can just set up a schedule so it runs on a specific time. UltraDefrag is very simple to use. Launch the program and choose the drive you want to defrag, analyze or optimize. The defrag option is self explanatory. The Analyze option displays a graphic sector table. It shows where on the hard disk your files are.

Once the analysis is complete, the utility will generate a report telling you how fragmented the files on the drive are. When you use the optimize option, UltraDefrag arranges the files so the most frequently used become easier to access. You will notice the difference after defragging; frequently used software will load faster. Windows will load quicker too.

UltraDefrag doesn’t just reorganize files; free space is consolidated. The current version supports NTFS, exFAT and FAT. You can do the localization or have one of the language packages do it. The full drive optimization will process all the files in your hard drive. There is a quick optimization option. It will only defrag files that are fragmented.

UltraDefrag generates reports after each defragmentation, analysis or optimization. The report will indicate which files are fragmented. Reports can be plain text or HTML. The plain text repots are useful if your system doesn’t have any browsers installed.

PeaZip is a powerful but easy to use open source archiving tool. There are many free compression utilities out there, but few are as robust as this one. In many ways, it is more powerful than some paid archive apps.

The program is user friendly. Thanks to its drag and drop support, a user just has to drag a zip file on the interface and it will be decompressed. The archiving screen pops open when you drop a file there. All the basic functions are labeled clearly so new users will have no trouble using the program. File browse tools and function buttons make it a snap to add folders and files.

You can make archives easily because the default settings are designed to make the process simple. But experts can tweak the settings using several options. Every tab is designed consistently; there is encryption, dictionaries, methods, set compression levels, text buttons and radio buttons. Casual users probably won’t tinker with these settings, but the options are there.

Sophisticated users will appreciate its wide range of file format support. PeaZip can extract over 150 archive formats including ZIPX, UDF, RAR, ISO, LHA, DMG, CAB, ARJ and ACE. OpenSource technologies like ZIP, WIM, XZ, TAR and many more are supported.

Numerous tools make it easy to perform archive management tasks such as finding duplicate files, hash calculation, viewing thumbnails and converting archives. PeaZip even has secure deletion, an encrypted password manager, two factor authentication and more. What really sets the software apart is the way it works. The extraction/compression interface has more in common with a traditional file compressor.

PeaZip is designed for Windows NT/98/Me/2000/XP/2003/Vista/Server 2008/7/8. If you want an archiving utility that goes beyond the basics, this is the one.

In many respects it seems odd that there’s a distinct divide between text messaging and instant messaging. They are almost the exact same thing, aside from the character limitations and charges, but the HeyWire app looks to bring good old fashioned texting back in line with our instant messaging expectations.

Created by MediaFriends Inc., the company seem to have hit the right note with HeyWire as the download numbers speak in favor of its strength.

Unlike ordinary messengers available for smartphones, HeyWire allows users to text even non-HeyWire users and that is how this app earns brownie points. Once installed, HeyWire provides users with a real U.S number for texting any number. The person being texted does not need to have HeyWire, they can be texted directly on their phone.

This feature is certainly a significant boon for iPod touch, iPad & non-cellular Android devices. The app is universal, so it essentially gives users a way to send and receive text messages from Apple and Android non-cellular devices. Apart from this, the app also leans toward the social networking side of messaging, by allowing users to text directly to Twitter, or tie in Facebooks chat function and Google Talk. And with its multi-screen and hierarchical structure, a proper track of conversations can be kept very easily, while being able to fire off a free text to up to 10 recipients at a go.

Overall, the app has its own unique functionality and does a great deal of a job for tablet users, who are usually ignored from the Instant Messenger scene. If nothing else impresses, the cross-platform aspect of HeyWire is very impressive, specially since the developer has effectively made it compatible with almost every mobile phone ever made.

Mp3tag is an application used for metadata editing. APE, Vorbis comments and ID3 of various audio formats are supported. The program is very popular due to its versatility.

Basic functions include playlist creation and export/import tag information. Mp3tag can replace words or characters on filenames and tags. File names can be changed using tag data. The software collects tag information on compact discs and files. Online database lookups is also supported.

Mp3tag is compact, but it is full-featured. There is support for ID3v2.4 with UTF-8, UTF-16) and ID3v2.3 (ISO-8859-1. It is possible to import tag data at a local freedb database or web based databases. Users can export tag data to formats such as xml, csv, rtf and html.

Other useful features are regular expressions, filename and tag formatting, tag importing from filenames, taking out the tag from many files or select parts. Mp3tag provides support for recursive subfolders, auto playlist creation and embedded cover art support.

The list of features goes on; you can add comments to files simultaneously, there is support for Unicode, APEv2- Vorbis and tags and writing to ID3v1.1 and ID3v2. Another reason for the editor’s popularity is its computability with a wide array of file formats. These include WavPack (wv), Windows Media Audio (wma), True Audio (tta), Ogg Vorbis (ogg), Musepack (mpc) and MPEG-4 (mp4 / m4a / m4b / iTunes. The program also supports Mpeg Layer 3 (mp3), Advanced Audio Coding (aac) and many others.

All of these features make it a very useful and powerful tag editor. You cannot beat the price (free) and the number of features. The interface is very simple, so even a novice will learn their way around quickly.

The image can be saved locally after you are done editing. The URL can be shared with friends or coworkers. This is a nifty tool that helps with collaborative works. Everything is done inside your browser, so there’s no need to launch other applications.

Awesome Screenshot can capture any visible area/region. You have the option of saving an entire image. Captured areas can be cropped, with specific dimensions indicated. It takes just one click to upload a captured area. Links can be shared on Twitter and Facebook.

Awesome Screenshot is designed for a simple task, but it does the job well. It has more functionality than similar utilities. It doesn’t take up a lot of resources and runs unobtrusively. As stated, its numerous functions work great in projects that require collaboration. But even casual web users will find applications for it.
