The game of checkers has been around for a long time, and made their way into desktops laptops and smartphones. Checkers Free from Optime Software is one of the best looking ones for the iPhone yet.

The design is simple and clean, something that has become a trademark of the company. Controls are intuitive; tap a piece to select and tap to where you want to put it. The game has an undo button in case you move in the wrong area. The options menu allows you to turn the sound effects on or off, use forced jumps or not and many others.

The graphics are nice, the subtle colors easy on the eyes. The sound when you move the piece is realistic. You also hear groans when you lose and cheers when you win. Single players can choose the level of play. Move the slider to the right to increase the difficulty level. Warning: moving to the extreme right will make the game very difficult.

Checkers Free has pretty good (and challenging) AI. You can go up against another player if you want to as well.

Fans of the classics will enjoy this game. Its addictive and can be played anywhere. If you have never played checkers before, this is a great way to get into it.

Frisbee Forever from publisher Kiloo is a lot of fun. Whether you’re a Frisbee aficionado or just getting into the game, it is worth a look into. There are ten unique settings. Each one has ten levels so there are a hundred in all. This feature alone shows just how varied the game can be.

The gamplay is simple; just flick your Frisbee and off it will go. There are obstacle courses to go through, but you can navigate the Frisbee right or left. Watch as your disc flies through corkscrews, loops and other obstructions.

The tile and touch controls work very well and your Frisbee glides smoothly. Keep your momentum by flying through triangular and circular checkpoints; you’ll need them to reach the end. If you get three stars in a level, you’ll earn a star coin. The more coins you earn, the more features you can unlock. Coins can also be used to upgrade your discs or buy new ones.

As you go deep into the game, you’ll have to collect stars along the way. The medals you earn will depend on how many of these stars you collect. The physics isn’t very realistic and it isn’t meant to be. Any sense of realism is happily thrown out of the window in the name of fun. The graphics are colorful, perfect for the game. The sounds are great too.

Basically what you have to do in Frisbee Forever is to strike the checkpoints and keep the disc in the air until the level ends. It is fun, but not without challenges. If you can’t play Frisbee outdoors this is the next best thing.

Pinball Deluxe

Pinball Deluxe is based upon the traditional game, but with twists. This Android arcade game comes with five tables. Each one has distinct features and can be considered a complete treat. They are Brix, Carnival, Diving for Treasure, Space Explorer and Wild West.

Controls for the game are simple. Touch and hold any part of the screen to propel the ball. Touching the left and right side of your smartphone will control the left and right flippers. Shake your phone if you want to give the table a shake. If you want to pause the game, tap the scoreboard at the top of the screen.

The highlights are the tables. Each has a unique design. Wild West has a cowboy theme with ramps, flippers and plungers. If you can reach special areas like the Bandit Hideout, Jackson Ranch, and the Saloon, you’ll gain access to mini games and bonus points.

The Space Explorer is obviously a space themed table. It has a Multiplier bonus at the top which you can gain access to. There are also mini games to be unlocked. There are six missions: Earth, Mars, the Space Station, Saturn, De Kuiper Belt and the Galaxy.

The Carnival has numerous sections too including the Haunted Mansion, the Truck Attack mini game and several mini game challenges. These include Target Practice, Shazam and Demolition Derby. The Diving for Treasure table uses an underwater theme. The objective is to find treasure, of course and score points. It has more flippers than the others and has numerous stations.

Pinball Deluxe can run on 240×320 all the way to 600×1024. It is compatible with Android 2.1 and up.

Fruit Ninja

Fruit Ninja by Halfbrick Studios is an addictive game based on a simple premise; slice and chop fruit. The game is set against a wood background and there you will chop all kinds of fruits. These are hurled into the air, and you have to slice them.

It sounds so simple but it is fun and you’ll definitely want to keep going. The controls are simple. Slide your finger on the display to cut a fruit before it vanishes from view. If you hit a bomb instead of a fruit, you’re out. If three fruits pass by the screen without being cut, you lose. That’s basically all there is to it.

Your objective is to cut as many fruits as possible. The longer you stay, the higher your score total will be. The gameplay is so simple it’ll only take a few seconds of play to know the rules. You will also quickly realize why the game is so popular.

The scope is limited but it is extremely enjoyable. The game is pretty easy at the start, great for new players. Slice recognition is very accurate and the OpenFront scoreboards make Fruit Ninja even more attractive.

The graphics are pretty good and so are the sounds. You’ll hear the fruits being tossed with a wooshing sound. Bombs come with a hissing sound. This helps players identify them. You will hear different sounds when slicing fruit (squishing, thwack, thud etc). The background noise consists of surf lapping and chirping. These sounds are subtle and won’t distract from the game.

Fruit Ninja is a great little game, perfect when you’re waiting or have nothing to do. This isn’t just a game to pass the time; you might find yourself actually making time for it.

Ruins (Cardboard Computers)

One of the more interesting games of late, Ruins, is a beautiful puzzle platformer involving dogs, rabbits and gorgeous shadowy landscapes. The game was created by Cardboard Computers, the same people responsible for that equally intriguing point & click about repairing balloons, Balloon Diaspora.

They’ve been around for some time and have released quite a handful of titles under their name. Specializing in short art games, the company is well-known for its beautiful graphics and quirky themes. Ruins is no exception to this. With a stunning game setting and an unconventional gameplay, it’s definitely worth your time.

Now a word of warning, the game deals more with ideas, and oftentimes you’ll simply find yourself discussing or thinking. There’s no big boss fight or exciting surprises in the game, instead you’ll be playing a dog who chases rabbits. And once you finally catch up to them, you actually just talk and listen to what they have to say.

This may sound utterly boring but it’s surprisingly entertaining. The dialogue or conversations that take place are very engaging and how you respond in the conversations serve as a crucial point in the game. It’s essentially what ties the whole storyline together.

Capturing the whole story by playing the game just once though is impossible. It takes multiple plays before you can get the entire picture since certain options/answers will yield only one piece of the puzzle. However, that’s the beauty of it. It’s the race of finding out the real score that will make you want to play the game again and again. Plus, the stunning landscape and the dreamy musical score is also another reason why you might want to keep coming back to this.

Overall, if you want to try something new and just play a very unconventional game, then you’re in for a treat in Ruins. Give this a go. The game is available as a free download.

Hailed as the next “Angry Birds,” A Monster Ate My Homework is an addictive physics game that’s charming and tons of fun to play. It’s similar to those games you used to play at the carnival where you would knock down stacks of bottles by throwing a ball at it.

The only difference is that you get to play this at the comfort of your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. Add to the mix colorful graphics, angry looking blocks and a really fun gameplay and you have yourself a winner. The game features 80 unique levels and an amazing 3D environment where you can easily throw the ball from any angle.

As you know, the game premise is simple. Simply knock off the stack of blocks from the platform by throwing balls at them. There’s one tricky aspect though, along with the blocks, your school books are piled in stacks as well. You must make sure that none of your school books fall into the water otherwise it’s game over.

One of the most alluring things about this game is that it’s so simple to play yet tough to master. You’ll find yourself trying again and again, especially if physics wasn’t something you were keen on back in school. As you progress through the levels, various obstacles will start appearing. These new obstacles can either work for you or against you so you have to be extra careful on where you throw the ball.

If you really look at it, the game gets so many things right; the mechanics are simple, the graphics are superb; the controls and execution is admirable. The social aspect is missing but personally, I don’t really mind. I think it’s still a great game whether played by yourself or with other people. Try it out and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

Tiny Ball vs. Evil Devil

Here’s another cool game to add to your favorite iOS device. Tiny Ball vs. Evil Devil is an interesting physics based game that tests out your aiming and strategy skills. The objective is to help the little blue ball get his ship back from the evil red guy.

Developed by iTankster, the game is currently available as a free download over at the App Store. Thanks to its colorful graphics and fun yet challenging gameplay, you’re guaranteed to keep playing this game for hours on end.

The game starts off all nice and dandy. The Tiny Ball is part of a happy crew in a ship when out of nowhere, the Evil Devil shows up and kicks him off the boat. Now, he has to defeat the Evil Devil by shooting a cannon and knock him off a set of boxes and onto the floor.

Like most games, the first time you open up the game you’re given a mini tutorial. The game relies on physics and strategy in knocking over the Evil Devil from the stack of boxes. Some levels are pretty straightforward, requiring only one ball to shoot at the enemy while other levels would need several attempts before hitting the target. There’s over 80 levels you can play in the game, plus 20+ unlockables.

Overall, the game is pretty addictive. Graphics are amazing while controls are pretty easy: simply tap, aim and fire. With Openfeint and Gamesupport options, you can even invite and challenge your friends for a quick game. Give it a download.

If you hate figuring out games, then stay clear from Youdunnit. This is perhaps one of the most confusing indie games out there. However, if you are up for a little challenge and don’t mind taking a Tylenol or two, this game would be right up your alley.

The game was created under 48 hours so don’t expect it to be perfect. In fact, it’s this confusing gameplay and headache inducing storyline that makes the game quite intriguing. It was created as an entry for the Global Jam Games and since then has gained notoriety among indie gamers as a weird yet must-try murder “mystery” game.

The story is all told in the title. There’s a murder that happened and everyone wants to know who did it. Of course, you are the killer but you have to keep your story straight throughout the investigation to ensure that you won’t get caught. This is where it becomes tricky since the detective will be asking things that you wouldn’t expect. It’s important to always be on your toes and to definitely get your entire story straightened out.

You have to make sure that the detective doesn’t discover any inconsistencies in your story. At the same time, you have to prevent everyone else in the room from establishing a clear alibi otherwise the fingers will be pointing at you.

As for the gameplay, it’s best explained by a dude named, James in his blog. He writes: The game is played in a series of levels that go progressively farther back in time. At each point you have to commit actions that implicate one of the other suspects. What makes this difficult is that while you do this, you have to interact with other people and things and, in order to preserve causality (your lie), you must remember what you did in the future so you can take the appropriate steps in the past.

It’s actually a very cool gameplay if you really think about it. It’s just extremely difficult and confusing once you actually play it. So, if you’re up for a real challenge, download this one and see if you can keep yourself from getting caught.

Playing FallOver! for the first time might seem as if the game is broken. The game is basically your typical Mario-esque platformer with a little twist – it has weird game physics.

Instead of the typical run, jump, walk affair, your little character has trouble keeping his two feet firmly planted on the ground. He has to walk with tons of coins in his pocket when he collects them so he constantly topples and “falls over.” This little twist is definitely enough to set apart the game from all other typical platformers. It’s a bit short but otherwise pretty fun to play.

Giving the game a first go can be a bit frustrating. You’ll need to adjust to your unbalanced protagonist and how he often falls flat on his face or ends up head-butting a platform whenever he walks. However, once you manage to adjust to the physics, the game becomes quite enjoyable to play.

There are 8 levels that you must go through. At the very end of each level, there’s a flag that you need to reach so you can proceed to the next stage. As you play through the stage, it’s important that your little British guy doesn’t fall on his face more than three times, otherwise you’re going to have to restart the level. You’ll also need to collect coins as you trudge along. This will help you earn points.

Controls are typical; arrow keys are used for the movement. If you want to jump, press S. If you want to get up after falling down, press A and then press R if you would like to restart the level.

Overall, the game is pretty cool and certainly different.

By The Power of Money is not exactly a game, per se, but more of an economic exercise. This interesting 2D platformer is different but surprisingly fun as well. It’s a bit challenging and takes time to get used to. However, ultimately, once you get a handle of the gameplay and the rules, it’s quite entertaining.

In the game, your goal is to rebuild a stage as you play. You’ll need to buy and lay down blocks, each one having its own unique property, but you need to do all this within your budget. The game is not just enjoyable but also tests your budgeting skills.

The game lets you start off with 5000 credits. For every block you buy or lay down, your credits will be deducted. While playing the game, you won’t be allowed to substitute current blocks with one that’s been sitting in your inventory. Also you are allowed to use just five types of blocks available from any particular level.

There are also guidelines for when you can actually use each block. For instance, only one green block can be used at any one time. Brown blocks are quite cheaper and they work great for creating platforms or bridges. Meanwhile, the white blocks are temporary. Those that have a number stamped on them indicate how long they will last before they disappear or vanish. Orange ones have the capacity to change directions every time they hit or bump into something while the purple blocks actually start moving in the direction that their arrows are facing.

The game is pretty much non-competitive, it’s perfect for those who like unusual games and the satisfaction of achieving something.
