Super Bit Dash combines elements of classic platformer games and the popular endless runner today. With its retro theme, smooth graphics and sounds, game developer Fakepup manages to pull off this unlikely combination. It’s not just an endless runner clone though, as there are elements her that make the game unique.

In the game you are a caped superhero who goes about collecting coins while trying to steer clear of pitfalls and obstacles along the way. You avoid this by using a variety of moves including being able to dash by swiping. Dashing gets you around more quickly, but this drains your energy quickly. The only way to replenish it is to collect as many of the coins as you can.

There are plenty of these coins in Super Bit Dash, so it doesn’t feel as if you are being shortchanged here. Collect enough coins and you will be able to smash through barriers, zoom past spikes, fly across gorges and more. These speed dashes is your main weapon so it is important to mange those coins.

The graphics are very good and capture that retro feeling nicely and if you have played these types of games before the controls will be very familiar. But what really makes Super Bit Dash stand out is the variety. While there are a fixed number of rooms per level, they are combined and selected randomly at the start, so it never feels like you’re playing the same thing over and over..

Super Bit Dash is an enjoyable game and one that retro fans will love. If you’re looking for an endless runner that is different, this should be up your alley.

Fix it Felix Jr by Disney is a port of the original arcade game for the iPhone. If you’re old enough to remember the original version, downloading and playing it on your iOS again will be a lot of fun. If you have never played arcade games before, welcome to the wonderful world of 8 bit graphics.

The game setup is pretty simple: Wreck-It Ralph goes up the Niceland apartment and smashes windows along the way, and it is up to you, Fix Felix It Jr, to clean up his mess. You do this with a magical hammer and using the directional keys. This isn’t as easy as it sounds because Ralph will throw bricks around. You’re not alone though, as the apartment tenants will leave pies around that you can use to gain extra lives.

One of the differences from the original version is that you are not limited to three lives, which is great, but you have a timer to beat and if it goes off, it’s game over no matter how many lives you got. Also, keep in mind that Ralph can break the windows that you have repaired, but at least the bricks Ralph throws only fall on a single screen column, not three like the original arcade game. The controls are very easy to learn, but mastering them takes time.

For these reasons, Fix it Felix Jr can be very challenging, but a lot of fun. If you’re in the mood for some old school platform fun, this is one you shouldn’t pass up. It’s a great way to kill time and learn about those classic games.

Bike Race Free from publisher Top Free Games is unique among racers. You compete against the clock to complete a track. The time you put in determines how many stars you will get (3 is the maximum). It isn’t easy because the tracks have loops and chasms.

It’s best to think of it as a racing / physics-based platformer game. There are similar games like this on PCs. If you have played those before, you’ll feel right at home here. Bike Race Free has 4 unique worlds each with 8 tracks. The worlds have themes (savanna, arctic, tundra etc). The different settings offer various challenges.

Game controls are easy to learn; tilt your tablet / phone to lean the bike back or forward. To accelerate, press your finger on the screen’s right side. The simple controls make Bike Race Free simple to play. While easy to learn, it’s difficult to master. You’ll keep coming back to erase seconds from your time. It’s the high degree of re-playability that makes this a worthy download.

The graphics are boldly colored, ideal for the game atmosphere. While the graphics are simple compared to other racing games, it is part of the charm. The sounds are all right, just what you’d expect from a bike. This game is ideal for those who are looking for stunt race games.

Bike Race Free, like many iOS apps, has in-app purchases. These IAPs allow you to unlock levels faster or buy other bikes. But they are not necessary to complete the game. The game is compatible with the iPad and iPod Touch.

TAGAP 2 (The Apocalyptic Game about Penguins) is the sequel to the original TAGAP game. Developed by the Penguin Development Team, it offers more action and adventure. This 2D platformer and shoot em up sees the team up of Pedro and Pablo, the cyber-penguins. Together they battle the zombie penguin army of the dastardly General Primo.

TAGAP 2 improves on the original with new weapons, environments and better graphics. The gameplay is more dynamic and bigger in every sense. Pedro can provide air strikes while Pablo can use electromagnetism and grenades. As per action games, you have a lot of weapons to choose from including chainguns, flamethrowers and so on. More powerful weapons are available as you progress. If power ups and heavy guns are not enough, you can control vehicles.

TAGAP 2 starts in New Zealand and Antarctica, but it branches out into other places including cities, an urban construction site, a mental ward, a jungle and more. If you make it to the final level, you will be in a mecha-penguin driven by General Primo. If you have played TAGAP, this game will be easy to pick up. Even if you haven’t, the controls are easy to learn. Warning: the enemy penguins are a lot tougher this time around.

The presentation is very nice, with 3D accelerated graphics effects combined with traditional 2D gameplay. A cool soundtrack for the game is also available. Advanced gamers can also use the level editor to extend its lifespan.

TAGAP 2 can be played by two people, with one taking the role of Pablo. The game is designed for Microsoft Windows 7, Vista and XP.

In Flying Sheeps, you get to play a distraught but determined farmer who is serious about getting his sheep back. You use and maneuver around a hot air balloon while trying to collect all of the flying sheep and bring them back to their pens on the ground.

Developed by Bad Mouse Digital Art, the company is a small indie game developer from South America, particularly Chile.

Apart from this one, the team has also released their multiplayer action game, Red Flag for the PC.

Playing Flying Sheeps isn’t exactly a complete thrill ride since you are riding a slow air balloon after all, however there are several interesting and well-thought out obstacles that make gathering your sheep not such an easy task.

As you fly on the balloon, you’ll encounter “air landmines” of sorts. Anything from sawblades to airborne wolves will be flying around to make your retrieval operation a pain. Accuracy is the name of the game here, fly a little too close and your balloon bursts sending you and your sheep down.

You’ll get about 50 levels on this one and much of the challenge already seeps in after level 5 so prepare to sit around for much longer if you intend to finish it. The levels are quite straightforward but there are tense sections that will test your accuracy and patience.

Luckily, the environment around the game is quite polished. Good attention to details as well as realistic physics are available. On top of that, good music as well as great graphics round up the game; keeping everything entertaining.

Overall, Flying Sheeps is an excellent game to try out. The gameplay itself is quite simple but it throws enough curve balls at you to keep you on your toes. Best part of all is that you can download it for free or at a pay-what-you-want download. Try it out and you’ll find yourself hooked quite easily.

In the indie gaming world, it’s quite rare to find a commercial-level game being offered for free. Of Light & Shadow is one great example of this.

Created by a group of Austrian students, the gang proves time and again that sometimes all you need is creativity and dedication to create a game that’s on par with some of the more successful commercial releases out there.

This little 3D puzzle game involves two characters, Dr. Shadow and Mr. Light. As the name suggests, one can only move in light while the other in darkness.

Even though it’s a small game, it offers so much to its players. Showcasing beautiful and smooth graphics using the Unity 3D Engine, the design isn’t the only thing fans rave about. The actual gameplay and concept are brilliantly done as well.

The game introduces two main characters; one of which can only function through the lighted areas while the other one remains in the dark. Their opposite behaviors don’t stop there. They also feature very specific skills that becomes useful in certain phases of the game. The light-only character provides great jumping abilities among his strengths, while the opposite one highlights his capacity to scale walls or vertical surfaces.

During the first level, each character gets a proper introduction; giving players a chance to become acquainted with them and their abilities. Pretty soon, obstacles will be thrown along the way which forces gamers to switch between the two characters, exploiting their abilities. Exciting switches as well as challenging monsters stir things up. There’s also a nice puzzle element added to keep everything interesting. On the other hand, a nice checkpoint system is in place in case things don’t go according to plan.

Like most games, it’s not flawless. It has received a few complaints for its controls but this isn’t really reason enough to pass it off. For a free game, players definitely get more than they could hope for.

Of Light & Shadow creates an alluring world that artists and gamers will appreciate. There’s enough interesting gameplay as well to keep them distracted for a little while. Check out the trailer below and give the game a try.

After a very long-time, Microsoft Studios is back with a major uplift of the Flight Simulator series, the Microsoft Flight. This time around, the game is free and very well integrates with games for Windows Life.

Developed by Microsoft Studios, Flight is one of the best in the simulator series and does the job really well. Instead of the boring environment, this time around the developers have incorporated the beautiful scenic locales of Hawaii. Allowing users to hover around the beautiful beaches and the likes.

Initially, players will be blessed with two aircrafts, namely, the Icon A5 and Stearman. Both of them have a unique feel to their flight. While the Icon is smooth and easy, the Stearman is more of a stiff challenge, especially during takeoffs due to the high-torque range of the propeller.

Right now the free content of Microsoft Flight can be divided into a missions, challenges, and the very popular free-flight mode. Players can also hunt for aerocaches (like an airborne scavenger hunt) or look on a local airfield’s job board to provide scenic tours of Hawaii or perform cargo runs. The modes are expansive, but playing the game and getting through with the jobs is very easy and not time consuming at all. These missions also include short tutorial missions on the whole, providing players with the basics to fly, land, and take-off.

The game boasts of some major in-app purchases of different sets of flights, but regular players can enjoy it without any in-app purchases and play to their hearts content. Overall, it’s a great simulation game with up-to-date graphics and a slick user-interface on the whole. Microsoft Flight is a must have for old-time fans, as well as newbie pilots. Fly on!

He’s the same guy who created side scroller versions of Halo and Left4Dead and even an 8-bit remake of DJ Hero.

This cool sidescroller has been winning raves from fans of the original game as well as those that are just discovering it. Like the original, the developer promises to include an online multiplayer function later on but for now players will have to settle with sharing their keyboard with a friend if they want to play co-op mode.

The game features tons of characters in different classes just like the original game. Each character has his own set of skills and specialties that you can take advantage of when bringing him into a firefight. The characters have a primary attack, a secondary one, a melee attack and one air or jumping attack. This gives you plenty of ways to take care of the enemy. If you’re not familiar with the original game, some of the characters at your disposal include a doctor, an engineer, a spy, a scout, a soldier and a couple more.

Team Fortress Arcade has 9 levels worth of gameplay and an epic boss battle if you get that far. It’s much like Contra or Double Dragon, where you have up to 4 players invading enemy territory. Although the game doesn’t allow PVP just yet, the bots are fully capable of giving you a good challenge.

Even though the game still has a few bugs here and there (full screen option for Mac still has problems,) it’s quite a fun and exciting game to get your hands on. The best part is that you can get all this goodness absolutely free! Definitely worth playing if you ask me.

One of the most addictive and sometimes frustrating game you can ever play, N is an award winning title that involves tons of jumping, climbing, and running.

The game was created by Metanet Software back in 2005 and won the audience choice award for the Independent Games Festival that same year. Today, the game has spawned a console (multiplayer) version for the Xbox Live Arcade, the Nintendo DS and the PSP titled, N+.

N was originally offered as a flash game but you can download it now onto your computer. There’s a version available for the Mac, Linux and of course, Windows system.

N has you playing a cool stick-figure ninja with all the abilities of a super cool hero. Your main goal is to complete each level by navigating through each one and avoiding various obstacles laid in your path. You also need to collect gold coins while heading for the exit door leading to the next section.

There are only three keys to use for controlling your character. You have the left and right arrow keys for movement and then the shift key for jumping. A combination of these allows your ninja to climb up vertical walls, slide and do all those cool things ninjas do.

About 99 levels are available for you to play; half of which were contributed by players themselves and handpicked by Metanet. Certain levels lets the player decide which exit to take while others only provide one way out. Moreover, there’s a time limit for finishing each level so you have to be quick on your toes in reaching the exit. Gathering up the gold coins however, increases your time by 2 seconds.

The game is done in 2D but its graphics are quite classy. Controls and reaction time of your ninja are pretty fast; making it effortless to have him running around everywhere. Of course, the puzzles themselves can be a bit of a challenge. There are times when the game becomes insanely frustrating because it’s hard to figure out how to finish and reach the exit. Nevertheless, it is definitely fun to play. It’s not just for those looking for a quick game in between breaks but for those who love a great brain-draining challenge as well.

Keys of a Gamespace might seem like an odd title for a video game but it’s actually very appropriate for this one. Developed by a group of people from the University of Metz in France, the game explores a new take on gaming; it uses it as a tool for gaining better understanding by putting you in someone else’s shoes.

The game sees you in the footsteps of a man trying to make sense of his past. Your job is to help him put together his memories by solving puzzles in each level. Each step gets you closer to unraveling what he has kept hidden in his subconsious. It’s an intriguing game that’s equipped with a unique storyline and an interesting gameplay.

When they created the game, the developers admit to being inspired by a number of things like David Lynch affairs Eraserhead and Twin Peaks to comic book, American Splendor. They also meant for it to become a statement piece; that the gaming medium can be used to handle sensitive and serious topics like any other form of media.

It’s a very expressive game and one that tackles issues that might not be to everyone’s liking. As mentioned, in the game you’ll be guiding a man through his life. From his first kiss, finding his father and finally making a very important and crucial decision; you have to help your character figure everything out.

The gameplay involves the use of doors serving as a gateway for various memories and stages of life. You can travel to different memories by going in and out of these doors. By adding and taking certain objects that are crucial to completing the memory, you’ll manage to complete the level and get a chance to move on deeper down until you figure everything out.

The graphics and musical score for the game are pretty good. It was perfect for adding mood and atmosphere to the game, helping trigger special moments for the character. In the end, there is a message hidden in there and one worth trying to figure out. Give it a go.
