Ready for some sweet and infectious folk melodies? Chicago-based music duo Dave and Licia Radford a.k.a The Gray Havens, offers six radio polished tracks in their 2012 release Where Eyes Don’t Go.

Ready for some sweet and infectious folk melodies? Chicago-based music duo Dave and Licia Radford a.k.a The Gray Havens, offers six radio polished tracks in their 2012 release Where Eyes Don’t Go.

Dave grew up in a musical family and studied Music Education at the University of Illinois while his wife Licia, started to sing on stage and learn guitar lessons in 2010. The couple recorded their first album last June 2012 and since then continued to create music in their home studio.

Jumping atop playful piano keys is Where it Goes. Dave’s crisp vocals blend well with the soothing melodies. The great part of this song is how the arrangement is controlled and let-out in a smooth manner. The artists let each instrument shine and decay in their own pace, creating a celebratory ending that’s pleasurable to the ears.

A sweet acoustic piece, Gray Flowers tells a charming love story. The upbeat, sunshine-filled melodies is a perfect starter for those bright mornings. Train Station, on the other hand, offers a deeper note. Just like the previous song, I love how The Gray Havens try to encapsulate a solid narrative within a song—a feat that not all artists could deliver.

Closing the album in a positive note is Let’s Get Married. Close your eyes, press play, and let its catchy tunes and saccharine lines melt your heart.

In Where Eyes Don’t Go, The Gray Havens has combined narrative and music into a solid collection that’s worth every listen.

1. Where it Goes
2. Silver
3. Gray Flowers
4. Train Station
5. Music From a Garden
6. Let’s Get Married

There’s a new kid in the indie block and it seems that they’re ready to shine. Bad Bad Hats first EP It Hurts will surely attract a lot of indie following.

Hailing from St. Paul, Minnesota, Bad Bad Hats is comprised of the songwriting duo Chris Hoge (vocals/guitars/bass/drums) and Kerry Alexander (lead vocals/guitar). Their music may be described as upbeat folk music with a touch of vintage sweetness.

Title track It Hurts opens the album with saccharine female vocals blended in rhythmic beats and consistent guitar strumming reminiscent of Camera Obscura. A charming brass play-up at the mid-end is a pleasant surprise to the ears.

Super America follows up with a more pop vibe. Kerry’s vocals is dangerously infectious as it flutters effortlessly in every note. Secrets Are No Fun follows the same sonic mold with the previous track. Grab a book, sip some cool drinks, and let this highly addictive piece serenade you.

Closing up the album is A Bout, a stripped down track that mostly invests on gentle strings and Kerry’s stunning vocals. The subtle softness of this track makes it the perfect end to the collection as it sums up all the good qualities of the band—arrangement, taste, and vocals.

It Hurts is a solid introduction to what Bad Bad Hats can offer. This band will surely go a long way.

Track List:
1. It Hurts
2. Super America
3. Secrets Are No Fun
4. 9AM
5. A Bout

Glass Kite‘s self-titled debut album rebels in it’s own alternative rock genre as it surprises the eager listeners with electronic, cinematic, and experimental musings.

Based in Vancouver, B.C., Glass Kites is a five-piece progressive rock band composed of Leon Feldman (vox/guitar/electronics), Nate Drobner (bass/keyboards), Curt Henderson (guitar), Daryn Cassie (keyboards/electronics), and Duncan Truter (drums).

The beat drops in Terra, a hefty progressive dream piece with layers over layers of guitars and keys. The band’s unique brand of atmospheric music is encapsulated in this opening piece.

The Body follows up with an explosion of experimental sounds slowly building into a crescendo of rapid beats and playful keyboard arrangement. Leon Feldman’s voice is pleasurable to listen to, it is amazing how it blends well with the melody and does not overpower the whole track.

In Soothsayer, the band offers another approach in post rock as ambient vocals is mixed with playful strings and electronic tunes. The track has a catchy beat that wraps the piece with a certain kind of positive, dance-inducing energy.

Slowly (Home) ends the collection with a slow, sexy tune. Once again, Feldman’s vocals gives justice to the whole ambient arrangement. Press play, close your eyes, and let this soothing track conclude this pleasurable listening experience.

With this debut album, Glass Kites has marked their spot on the game and will surely attract steady followers. Their music reminds you that with creativity and out-of-the-box thinking, a genre can continually grow.

Okozo ensures that your desktop is never boring by livening it up with movement and interaction. Using this form of freeware, a user is able to embed interactive calendars and clocks onto their desktop, along with many other things that can be pulled from the net.

Animations are flash based and unlike WMV based desktop animations, Okozo animations require minimal CPU usage and memory. This deems it more practical when compared to ‘Dreamscenes’ and similar programs.

On top of this, animations are extremely stylish and neat. It is easy to imagine that an animated and interactive desktop could become overwhelming at times. Do not worry, this isn’t the case for Okozo. Its animations are fairly subtle and are only noticeable if focused on.

There are two downsides to Okozo. Firstly, it can only play ‘.okozo’ files, meaning that popular files like ‘.SWF’ must be converted in order to be used by Okozo. This can be done on the official Okozo website and a user must wait until the site converts the file. Secondly, at the moment, there is only a moderate amount of selection and a user is only given a limited amount of power in customizing the designs.

Overall, Okozo is an excellent program, it is easy to use, light, free and it is definitely worth a shot. As Okozo grows older, I am sure that more desktop animations will become available and the program will improve. It is one of the most advanced programs of its kind and it will definitely enhance your desktop.
