They say space is the final frontier! Many movies have been exploring the ultimate of human desires; some of them have soared, while others, in unknown numbers, have crash landed instead. The Cosmonaut is one film that has already soared above all others as the first, fully crowd funded, Creative Commons Licensed project of a grandiose scale. This beautifully shot sci-fi drama is out TODAY, FREE around the world and simultaneously on the web, TV, DVD and in the theaters.

Set in 1967, right of the boom of the Space Age, it focuses on three friends and their journey through life, space and the moon. “The Cosmonaut” is a film that takes viewers to a psychological, emotional and even romantic love story among its three protagonists.

The main story revolves around Stas as he “gets lost in space. When he comes back, he finds Earth completely empty. Yulia and Andrei wait for him in a collapsing world. How far would you go for love?” This subject of love and emotion plays a central role in the film.

As exciting as its story, the actual making of the film is also a journey worth being told. It’s the first film to be released under Riot Cinema Collective and has successfully used crowdfunding (raising more than 400 thousand Euros) to produce and create the entire film.

According to their press release:

“The Cosmonaut” is much more than a movie. Is an experience that took four years in the making, pushing the boundaries of alternative distribution, copyright and financing. It’s crowdfunded (with more than half a million dollars raised), creative commons-licensed (all the raw materials will be realeased for you to reuse them and it will be online for free on our website as well as in P2P), transmedia (a feature film, 30 extra episodes, a shortfilm and two books), and with a fan-based distribution (you can organize your screening and make money!).

A film that will take you fifty years back in time, to the beginning of the Space Race, when the Soviets ruled the cosmos. Suit up and choose “The Cosmonaut” experience. If you dare.

The film is directed by Nicolas Alcala and produced by Carola Rodriguez and Bruno Teixidor starring Katrine De Candole, Leon Ockenden and Max Wrottesley. It’ll be out on a pay-what-you-want option as well. Those who choose to donate will also receive access to additional film footage and other movie details.

For an independent film, its utter uniqueness and story is well worth the watch.

Guilt

Dark and hauntingly beautiful, Guilt is a poetic thriller about good and evil. It’s a 2012 short�animation�project by director/animator Tobias Larson.

The film follows the story of a burdened creature with a dark past. She meets a gentle and�mysterious�cat that leads her to an experience that will transform and open her eyes.

Painting a stark contrast between two things, the creators attempt to discuss a dark narrative with colorful animation reminiscent of children story books. But the film plays this contrast as its�strength as the attractive visuals and charming creatures lighten the heavy narrative tackled in the film. This was a tricky decision because too much of blood or cuteness may lead to different conclusions rather on what the film wants to convey.

The lack of words/dialogues also helped in�intensifying�the impact of each imagery. It shows rather than tell the whole story�a basic mantra that every filmmaker should put into use.

As a whole, Guilt is a striking short that doesn’t only tackle a very complex premise, but also pushes our minds to dive deep and reflect the meaning of good and evil.

Lili Marleen

Have a break and devour in the heartwarming short film, Lili Marleen. Based on a true story and inspired by Jack Leroy Tueller, the film is about a young American soldier who in the middle of a war, uses the power of music to reconnect with his humanity even if it puts his life at risk.

Set against the devastation of D-day, the story is a vivid depiction of time, place, and conflict. All these three factors pushed the main character to his limit�to grasp the tiniest sense of reality amidst the chaotic canvas he’s been living in the moment. One thing that I loved about the film is its use of silence and subtleness that paints a stark contrast to the film’s powerful setting. This said softness in the story also translates in the short’s visual images. The use of subtle darkness with a hint of light source (as if it’s early morning), sets a gloomy tone that reflects the main character’s emotion.

Simple yet concise, the film shows us how a simple melody can remind these soldiers of their humanity. And even after repeats, this piece of art even gets better in pulling our strings to the limits.

All in all, Lili Marleen produced by Whitestone Motion Pictures, is a beautifully-made film that’s guaranteed to push anyone’s buttons. So press play, enjoy, and learn how courage and hope go a long way.

My Strange Grandfather

Dina Velikovskaya breathes new life into puppet making in her whimsical film My Strange Grandfather.

Though puppet animation is no longer popular in Russia, the 28-year old artist taught herself to make puppets and created this heartwarming stop-motion film. Running over eight minutes, My Strange Grandfather tells the story of a little girl who can’t understand his weird grandfather and his eccentric habit of picking up trash, only to discover something magical that will make him appreciate the old man.

The story lays a solid foundation for the whole film because it has a focused and penetrable center. Using only two main characters, the film was not polluted and excess sub-stories were avoided – it was easy to digest even for children.

Velikosvkaya exceeded expectations when in terms of�craftsmanship. Each detail was intricately done, and the variety of colors unify in each scene. Though the story was of magic realism, the visuals were not disorienting to eye.

My Strange Grandfather is an exceptional work of art that brims with imagination, originality, and beauty. Dina Velikovskaya has outdone herself; if there is a film to resurrect puppet animation, this is a good place to start.

Cupidon

Follow Cupid as he lives his worst day ever in Cupidon, a CG graduation short film for ESMA co-directed�by Simon Bau, Cl�mentine Choplain, Marie Ecarlat, Benoit Huguet, and Julien Soulage.

The film tells the story of Cupid and how a major mistake in a pair-up leads him to an�unforgettable�roller-coaster�adventure.

One of the film’s strong suits is how it created two solid characters that are both sweet and fizzy. The narrative is simple, accessible, and fun to play with. The use of mirrors as a tool to push the narcissist to the limits is very powerful as it created texture and climax to the whole story.

The short also treats us with smooth and colorful visuals. Hues of brown and blue to set reality are soothing to the eyes, while the neon colors in the chase seen evoke a high level of energy.

Inventive, original, and charming, Cupidon is an enchanting short that reminds you that maybe the only thing that comes between you and finding “the one”, is a moment and a missed arrow.

Watch an arctic love triangle between a walrus, a seal, and a lobster in Cooked. This 7-minuter animation is directed and designed by Jens Blank, produced by Tom Legget, and written by Caroline Brucker. Cooked became an official selection in the Cannes Film Festival last 2010.

Boasting enough wits and laugh to stand on its own, the short is a charming animation that caters to all audiences. The film sticks to a straight line narrative that’s easy to follow. Its light and accessible narrative, charming creatures, and slapstick humor makes this a treat for the whole family to enjoy.

Satisfy your inner film junkie with Tiger, the newest feature film by Beaufort and is written and directed by former model James McFay.

Set in the snow landscapes of Tokyo, Tiger is an intimate romantic drama that follows the story of two disillusioned models who fall in love during the winter fashion season, only to combust when their stay extends.

The movie stars models Rachel Blais, James McFay, Pierre Olivier-Beaudoin, Rebecca Victoria, Rory Stewart, and Beata Vildzeviciute. It has already played in the Zero Film Festival (LA) and won the Special Jury Prize at Japan’s Pia Film Festival.

John Henry and The Railroad

Atlanta-based Whitestone Motion Pictures has done it again in John Henry and The Railroad, a remarkable short film that tells the tale of John Henry, an American folk hero whose name has been used in the struggle for Civil Rights and the Labor Movement. Legend goes that after John Henry became a freedman, he took his son to find work in a railroad construction and make a new life for himself. But little did John know that something dialobolical was just waiting around the corner.

The film was directed by Brandon McCormick and produced by McCormick together with Nicholas Kirk. It Stars Roger Mitchell (John Henry). Michael Lluma (Henry’s Son), and H Russel (Narrator).

The film offers a new narative to the old legend as it changes John Henry’s fate at the end. Using a narrator, the filmmakers adds an overall coiuntry vibe to the story. You can actually see how a great vision came to life with remarkable craftmanship.

Along with a great narrative is a full production. The scenes were shot in such a high quality that can stand along mainstream productions.

Overall, John Henry and The Railroad is a product of pure talent and passion. It revives an old legend, giving it a new twist for audience of all ages to enjoy.

El Vendedor Humo

From the school that created FriendSheep, PrimerFrame, comes another short film that will transport the audience to a whimsical visual experience.

El Vendedor Humo (The Smoke Seller) is a 6-minuter animation that tells the story of a mysterious vender who transforms and deceives a sleepy town through his magical smoke. It’s directed by Jaime Maestro and produced by Carlos Escuita.

Stepping outside the boundaries of what seems like a rather conventional heartwarmer, the creators gave birth to a fresh narrative that will capture eyes from start to finish. Scene after scene, the story tempts and tricks the audience, transforming the film into an unpredictable little piece of gem.

The smoothness and elegance of the story is also translated into the animation by creating deligtful characters and vibrant animation. The charm of the film of the film did not overpower, but instead worked hand in hand with the grounded story.
