Dark and hauntingly beautiful, Guilt is a poetic thriller about good and evil. It’s a 2012 short animation project by director/animator Tobias Larson.

The film follows the story of a burdened creature with a dark past. She meets a gentle and mysterious cat that leads her to an experience that will transform and open her eyes.

Painting a stark contrast between two things, the creators attempt to discuss a dark narrative with colorful animation reminiscent of children story books. But the film plays this contrast as its strength as the attractive visuals and charming creatures lighten the heavy narrative tackled in the film. This was a tricky decision because too much of blood or cuteness may lead to different conclusions rather on what the film wants to convey.

The lack of words/dialogues also helped in intensifying the impact of each imagery. It shows rather than tell the whole story—a basic mantra that every filmmaker should put into use.

As a whole, Guilt is a striking short that doesn’t only tackle a very complex premise, but also pushes our minds to dive deep and reflect the meaning of good and evil.

Atlanta-based Whitestone Motion Pictures has done it again in John Henry and The Railroad, a remarkable short film that tells the tale of John Henry, an American folk hero whose name has been used in the struggle for Civil Rights and the Labor Movement. Legend goes that after John Henry became a freedman, he took his son to find work in a railroad construction and make a new life for himself. But little did John know that something dialobolical was just waiting around the corner.

The film was directed by Brandon McCormick and produced by McCormick together with Nicholas Kirk. It Stars Roger Mitchell (John Henry). Michael Lluma (Henry’s Son), and H Russel (Narrator).

The film offers a new narative to the old legend as it changes John Henry’s fate at the end. Using a narrator, the filmmakers adds an overall coiuntry vibe to the story. You can actually see how a great vision came to life with remarkable craftmanship.

Along with a great narrative is a full production. The scenes were shot in such a high quality that can stand along mainstream productions.

Overall, John Henry and The Railroad is a product of pure talent and passion. It revives an old legend, giving it a new twist for audience of all ages to enjoy.

Calm your senses and fill your imagination with Origami, a short animation created by Joanne Smithies, Eric De Melo Bueno, Michael Moreno, Hugo Bailly Desmarchelier, and Camille Turon as a CG graduation short for ESMA.

Spanning over eight minutes, the film tells the journey of a simple Japanese boy who will learn to appreciate tradition, such as origami making, through a single, overpowering experience.

Holding a simple yet solid story, the film manages to visually dazzle the audience while maintaining a fluid plot. One thing that makes this short different is its light and calming pace—it executed actions without clouding your mind.

The creators did not stir away from the film’s theme as they incorporated bits and pieces of Japanese culture throughout. I love how the characters’ appearance were inspired by the Noh mask while the dream/action sequence incorporated basic elements of Japanese art.

Scene after scene, Origami unleashes stunning images in a clean and mysterious manner. Its thematic and visual style will surely leave the audience in awestruck bliss.

Treat yourself with Reviving Redwood, a lovely animated film about an old man’s struggle to bring life back to an abandoned logging town.

Directed and created by Matt Sullivan as a thesis animation at Ringling College of Art and Design, this short film bursts with spectacular color and flawless animation.

The film sports an appealing premise that’s in every bit equal to its high level of technical brilliance. Transitioning from scene to scene, the creator have mastered the art of details and texture.

Another standout feature of the film is its nostalgic musical score that’s perfectly paired with the brilliant color that’s painstakingly brought to life with every wind vane created by the old man.

I also loved how the creator played with the hues and film lighting to evoke the emotions of the sole character in the story. The transition from gray hues to bright colors portrayed the old man’s emotion in surgical precision.

In Reviving Redwood, Matt Sullivan has created a small world where the viewers can escape for a few seconds and immerse themselves in a joyful ensemble of colors and emotions.

Encapsulating beauty and innocence, My Favourite Things is that kind of film that you’d want to watch over and over again.

Directed by Edward Styles under kidswithcrayons production, this five minute short film shows the innocent tale between two friends who meets in the most unlikely manner. It has already rounded the festival circuits including a latest selection on the Little Big Shots International Film Festival last 2011.

Upon watching, one powerful characteristic of the film is the stunning color grading. It gives a nostalgic and sentimental vibe that fits well with the story’s theme. Actors Amelia Cook and Theo Styles were also perfect for the roles as their talent and charm exudes from frame to frame.

The music composed by Stephen Wright blends well giving more texture. The faint and quirky piano ensemble portrays the playfull nature of the two main characters.

All in all, My Favourite Things is a splendid watch about love and simple child’s play. So download, press play, and let this one-of-a-kind film touch your heart.

At first you wonder why this film won the 48 hour film project, was selected to be shown at the Cannes Film Festival, and gathered awards like the judges had no choice. It began, after all, with plain looking person who appears happy yet dirty and in his long sleeved polo shirt and slacks. That is of course until you reach that part that made your heart skip a bit.

Directed by Ben Crowell and Joel Marsh, One Step Forward also makes you think why it was titled such when the story was told from present to past – in a result-cause sequence. But then you follow that one main character for four minutes while speculating what made him afloat and that happy–what made him roll his body in the woods, jump into the water from the bridge, do cartwheels in the park and a lot of other unusual things. It was not just about seizing the day. And by the end of the film, you realize why the man is taking one step forward.

With no words at all, the short was accompanied with music that is both whimsical and endearing–something not overpowering the emotions emanating from the character.

One Step Forward certainly deserves “Best Film,” “Best Directing,” “Best Cinematography,” and “Best Editing.” But what I like about it the most is its appeal to the human emotions, including the small pleasures and the grandest things that make us all happy and giddy.

The film was created by the talented team of Anthony Delliste, Tristan Evin, Maxime Guillemin, Florent Razafimandimby, and Alexis Vallauri for ESMA. With a 7-minute runtime, it tells the story of Gom, a young boy who works in Acme Circus. Despite his fear of turning soft after hearing a loud noise, he tries his best to overcome this weakness.

Perhaps the most brilliant feature of this film is its attention to detail and characters’ movement. The ingenious design and execution made this film catchy and an easy watch for those seeking a light-hearted film.

Gom, as the main character, exudes a child-like charm and innocence that appeals to everyone. His bravery and innocence succeeds in reshaping main characters in animation.

Even in its tiniest pixel, GOM brims with imagination, zippy storytelling, and heartfelt laughs. So indulge yourself with this little treat, and let this short remind you what soulful animation is all about.

Have you ever wondered what goes inside a child’s mind? Create takes you on a quick journey on how a child’s imagination can be both thrilling and fearful.

Written, directed, and animated by Dan MacKenzie over the course of six months while attending the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), Create is a stop motion claymation that has been starting its rounds in film festivals including the Fantastic Fest, Newport Beach Film Festival, and the Savannah Film Festival.

The short is about a young mad scientist who sets out to create a pet monster within parallel worlds of an imaginary laboratory and the reality of the boy’s bedroom.

With only a quick runtime, the film has successfully created a solid foundation for the main character. It also had a knack for stacking humor along with alternating light and dark scenes.

MacKenzie has done a wonderful job on the stop motion animation. It’s flawless and crisp with some imaginative splash of color all throughout. The voice overs (Louise Phillips and Phe), the out of focus effects, and the music/sound (Martin Mayer) also helped the film to weave a concrete and exciting story.

Overall, Dan MacKenzie has showcased his artistic talent and sure-handed control on his material. Create is a wonderful film that gives us a sneak peak to a child’s limitless imagination, while at the same time leaving a trail of chuckles and innocence along the way.

Craving for another spellbinding animation? Then push that play button and devour on the magnificent short, Kagemono: The Shadow Folk.

Created by Sabrina Cotugno as a fourth year project in the California Institute of the Arts , this 4-minuter film revolves around a little fox who goes hunting on the woods, without knowing what strange discoveries lay ahead.

One thing that makes this film standout is its classic, Ghibi-like visuals. It creates a nostalgic experience for those who grew up with old-school animation. I love how it’s packed with strange beings that deliver a subtle, fantasy world that’s easy to understand.

The narrative is also spot on; it has all the elements that you’d seek in a solid story. Cotugno’s idea of a shadow-eater is genuinely unique. The film clearly exalts the little fox’s uncanny experiences into a charming and thrilling adventure.

All in all, Kagemono: The Shadowfolk is a gorgeously animated short that will take you on a roller-coaster ride of sheer curiosity to a wonderful experience. Film lovers of any ages should not pass the opportunity to watch such a work of imagination.

Hands down, the creator has really made something special here as this short bursts a lot of talent, imagination, and creative mojo.
