Take a moment to breathe as Hannes Appell’s Motherland enthrall you to a state of awe. Set in a totalitarian propaganda world ruled from above, witness how a young girl spark off a revolution and challenge the ruling system or the motherland.

Using cuttig edge 3d real-time technology to depict a stylized past, Motherland offers the best of both worlds—it’s visually appealing and emotionally moving at the same time.

The narrative and imagery can be considered as the strongest suits of the film. Scene after scene, the viewers are treated with expertly rendered and framed images of stereotypic characters and motives that are abundant on the propaganda art of the 1920s and 1930s. The film succeedingly attempted to turn and deconstruct the concept of “motherland”, revealing terrifying truths behind the propaganda.

In Motherland, the filmmaker has brought the audience to the past—to the age of inverted totalitarianism. It showed a well-crafted model of the motherland during those times. The challenge now is how to model the motherland today.

Watch an arctic love triangle between a walrus, a seal, and a lobster in Cooked. This 7-minuter animation is directed and designed by Jens Blank, produced by Tom Legget, and written by Caroline Brucker. Cooked became an official selection in the Cannes Film Festival last 2010.

Boasting enough wits and laugh to stand on its own, the short is a charming animation that caters to all audiences. The film sticks to a straight line narrative that’s easy to follow. Its light and accessible narrative, charming creatures, and slapstick humor makes this a treat for the whole family to enjoy.

The stronger suit of this film is the visuals. With crisp images and smooth body movements, the high quality of animation can be at par with mainstream animated films. Scene after scene, the film bursts with detail, soothing color palette, and texture that makes Cooked a pleasurable watching experience.

Produced at the Natioanl Film & Television School, the film features the voices of Stephen Mangan (Rob), Katherine Parkinson (Lucy), and David Morrisey (Dan).

Cooked is yet another marvelous and silly love story that hold its own lovable characters and humor. This is the kind of movie that’s perfect for kids, or even for the kids at heart.

El Vendedor Humo (The Smoke Seller) is a 6-minuter animation that tells the story of a mysterious vender who transforms and deceives a sleepy town through his magical smoke. It’s directed by Jaime Maestro and produced by Carlos Escuita.

Stepping outside the boundaries of what seems like a rather conventional heartwarmer, the creators gave birth to a fresh narrative that will capture eyes from start to finish. Scene after scene, the story tempts and tricks the audience, transforming the film into an unpredictable little piece of gem.

The smoothness and elegance of the story is also translated into the animation by creating deligtful characters and vibrant animation. The charm of the film of the film did not overpower, but instead worked hand in hand with the grounded story.

All in all, El Vendedor Humo lives up to its potential. It’s a great film that’s suited for the whole family. So press play, watch, and let this film brighten up that gloomy day.

He is fat, pink, and has an adorable snout. He has everything you are looking for in a pig. But by the end of this short film, you will surely contest that Ormie the pig is more than just delightful and charming written all over him.

For the whole length of the short, watch Ormie as he launches numerous attempts in pursuit of his love – a jar filled with cookies. And what does a pig got to do in the face of food? Take it down and gobble it. It is not that easy a task; but, Ormie is not your ordinary pig in a pen.

In more than three minutes, the creator of Ormie highlights the pig’s movements to reach his most wanted cookies in several comical ways and failing each he does so. Each of these attempts is presented one right after another – in a very quick pace – maintaining the humor from start to finish. A smile – at the very least – is guaranteed not to leave your face for the whole length of the short film. Also, Ormie’s was shown to have movements exhibiting his agility and speed – one may actually wonder his eligibility as a pig.

So free that kid in you and indulge even in just a few minutes of childlike laughter.

Harmony. Pain. Love. Cycle of Life. Haoma reaffirms ESMA artisans’ gift for imaginative and highly creative filmmaking.

Originally a 2008 ESMA (Ecole Supérieure des Métiers Artistiques) graduation project, this short film was directed by students Matthieu Deltour, Melissa Lafon, Elodie Legros and Yann Moalic. The music was composed by Martin Romberg and performed by the Orchestre National de Montpellier.

Set in a dream world where life is governed by cycles, living things are born from cocoons and their primary purpose is to find a mate. An unnamed character is casted away from society due to his differences, only to prove that bravery and sacrifice is the best way to show one’s love.

Haoma (ESMA 2008 Graduation Film) from Yann Moalic on Vimeo.

Unlike other ESMA’s animated treat, Haoma is different in multiple levels. It’s an exploration of love and the hypocritical tendency of society to outcast people who are different. The most exhilarating moments are those when you can absorb the main character’s sorrow and loneliness.

The scenes are nothing short of magical. The filmmakers have created a dream world that’s visually stunning and amazingly original.

All in all, Haoma is a feast for the eyes. It can be considered as a beautiful work of art that was firmly held in both the technical and narrative aspect.

This four-minuter student film at the Bringham Young University shows the adventure of a girl through the city’s underground passageway as she follows a mysterious fox that snatched her metro ticket.

Wyatt certainly has a handle on his craft. He makes good use of soft tones, watercolor visuals, and subtle pacing to evoke a feel-good and heart warming emotion. The selective framing and composition abstracts adds texture to the short, adding spice to a linear narrative.

Also, another major element to the short is its music. The gentle cooing piano gives an elegnat and delicate atmosphere. It transports you to a universe of the young girl where every little thing, even riding the metro, is one great adventure.

Overall, Metro is a delightful piece of animation that reminds us that there is beauty in subtleness, grace, and artistic control. Jacob Wyatt has succeeded in creating a silent masterpiece where the character is in body language and narrative is in visuals.

Treat yourself with Reviving Redwood, a lovely animated film about an old man’s struggle to bring life back to an abandoned logging town.

Directed and created by Matt Sullivan as a thesis animation at Ringling College of Art and Design, this short film bursts with spectacular color and flawless animation.

The film sports an appealing premise that’s in every bit equal to its high level of technical brilliance. Transitioning from scene to scene, the creator have mastered the art of details and texture.

Another standout feature of the film is its nostalgic musical score that’s perfectly paired with the brilliant color that’s painstakingly brought to life with every wind vane created by the old man.

I also loved how the creator played with the hues and film lighting to evoke the emotions of the sole character in the story. The transition from gray hues to bright colors portrayed the old man’s emotion in surgical precision.

In Reviving Redwood, Matt Sullivan has created a small world where the viewers can escape for a few seconds and immerse themselves in a joyful ensemble of colors and emotions.

The film was created by the talented team of Anthony Delliste, Tristan Evin, Maxime Guillemin, Florent Razafimandimby, and Alexis Vallauri for ESMA. With a 7-minute runtime, it tells the story of Gom, a young boy who works in Acme Circus. Despite his fear of turning soft after hearing a loud noise, he tries his best to overcome this weakness.

Perhaps the most brilliant feature of this film is its attention to detail and characters’ movement. The ingenious design and execution made this film catchy and an easy watch for those seeking a light-hearted film.

Gom, as the main character, exudes a child-like charm and innocence that appeals to everyone. His bravery and innocence succeeds in reshaping main characters in animation.

Even in its tiniest pixel, GOM brims with imagination, zippy storytelling, and heartfelt laughs. So indulge yourself with this little treat, and let this short remind you what soulful animation is all about.

In just about five minutes, watch Frankie the space alien as he takes over the universe by claiming property over planets one by one. Written and directed by San Charoenchai, this short film has already taken over the animation landscape as it won three Best Film awards this year and numerous selections in various film festivals.

The colors used gave the setting a somewhat dark feel to the film. And while the pacing and movements were slow despite the crimes in space involved, the creators of the film were able to perfectly reflect the mood of the very short story. The setting was made to be as fairly accurate as possible, too.

Having the same head gear as Toy Story’s Buzz Lightyear, Frankie appears to look like a robot, too–but awkward looking at that. More amusingly, the two seemed to have been created to appear as if they should lead everyone else around them.

At first, you would think that the video or computer game-like animation and sound effects were safe and comical enough for kids of all ages. That is true, of course, before Frankie starts killing inhabitants of different planets and slicing planets in half.

To show that he has conquered a planet, he plants his personalized flag on the surface of the planet just like what the astronauts did years back. He seems indestructible. But see what happens to him as he came to found his match.

Have you ever wondered what goes inside a child’s mind? Create takes you on a quick journey on how a child’s imagination can be both thrilling and fearful.

Written, directed, and animated by Dan MacKenzie over the course of six months while attending the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), Create is a stop motion claymation that has been starting its rounds in film festivals including the Fantastic Fest, Newport Beach Film Festival, and the Savannah Film Festival.

The short is about a young mad scientist who sets out to create a pet monster within parallel worlds of an imaginary laboratory and the reality of the boy’s bedroom.

With only a quick runtime, the film has successfully created a solid foundation for the main character. It also had a knack for stacking humor along with alternating light and dark scenes.

MacKenzie has done a wonderful job on the stop motion animation. It’s flawless and crisp with some imaginative splash of color all throughout. The voice overs (Louise Phillips and Phe), the out of focus effects, and the music/sound (Martin Mayer) also helped the film to weave a concrete and exciting story.

Overall, Dan MacKenzie has showcased his artistic talent and sure-handed control on his material. Create is a wonderful film that gives us a sneak peak to a child’s limitless imagination, while at the same time leaving a trail of chuckles and innocence along the way.
