Watch an arctic love triangle between a walrus, a seal, and a lobster in Cooked. This 7-minuter animation is directed and designed by Jens Blank, produced by Tom Legget, and written by Caroline Brucker. Cooked became an official selection in the Cannes Film Festival last 2010.

Boasting enough wits and laugh to stand on its own, the short is a charming animation that caters to all audiences. The film sticks to a straight line narrative that’s easy to follow. Its light and accessible narrative, charming creatures, and slapstick humor makes this a treat for the whole family to enjoy.

The stronger suit of this film is the visuals. With crisp images and smooth body movements, the high quality of animation can be at par with mainstream animated films. Scene after scene, the film bursts with detail, soothing color palette, and texture that makes Cooked a pleasurable watching experience.

Produced at the Natioanl Film & Television School, the film features the voices of Stephen Mangan (Rob), Katherine Parkinson (Lucy), and David Morrisey (Dan).

Cooked is yet another marvelous and silly love story that hold its own lovable characters and humor. This is the kind of movie that’s perfect for kids, or even for the kids at heart.

He is fat, pink, and has an adorable snout. He has everything you are looking for in a pig. But by the end of this short film, you will surely contest that Ormie the pig is more than just delightful and charming written all over him.

For the whole length of the short, watch Ormie as he launches numerous attempts in pursuit of his love – a jar filled with cookies. And what does a pig got to do in the face of food? Take it down and gobble it. It is not that easy a task; but, Ormie is not your ordinary pig in a pen.

In more than three minutes, the creator of Ormie highlights the pig’s movements to reach his most wanted cookies in several comical ways and failing each he does so. Each of these attempts is presented one right after another – in a very quick pace – maintaining the humor from start to finish. A smile – at the very least – is guaranteed not to leave your face for the whole length of the short film. Also, Ormie’s was shown to have movements exhibiting his agility and speed – one may actually wonder his eligibility as a pig.

So free that kid in you and indulge even in just a few minutes of childlike laughter.

At first you wonder why this film won the 48 hour film project, was selected to be shown at the Cannes Film Festival, and gathered awards like the judges had no choice. It began, after all, with plain looking person who appears happy yet dirty and in his long sleeved polo shirt and slacks. That is of course until you reach that part that made your heart skip a bit.

Directed by Ben Crowell and Joel Marsh, One Step Forward also makes you think why it was titled such when the story was told from present to past – in a result-cause sequence. But then you follow that one main character for four minutes while speculating what made him afloat and that happy–what made him roll his body in the woods, jump into the water from the bridge, do cartwheels in the park and a lot of other unusual things. It was not just about seizing the day. And by the end of the film, you realize why the man is taking one step forward.

With no words at all, the short was accompanied with music that is both whimsical and endearing–something not overpowering the emotions emanating from the character.

One Step Forward certainly deserves “Best Film,” “Best Directing,” “Best Cinematography,” and “Best Editing.” But what I like about it the most is its appeal to the human emotions, including the small pleasures and the grandest things that make us all happy and giddy.

A story of courage and bravery, GOM streches our imagination with a kick of comical humor.

The film was created by the talented team of Anthony Delliste, Tristan Evin, Maxime Guillemin, Florent Razafimandimby, and Alexis Vallauri for ESMA. With a 7-minute runtime, it tells the story of Gom, a young boy who works in Acme Circus. Despite his fear of turning soft after hearing a loud noise, he tries his best to overcome this weakness.

Perhaps the most brilliant feature of this film is its attention to detail and characters’ movement. The ingenious design and execution made this film catchy and an easy watch for those seeking a light-hearted film.

Gom, as the main character, exudes a child-like charm and innocence that appeals to everyone. His bravery and innocence succeeds in reshaping main characters in animation.

Even in its tiniest pixel, GOM brims with imagination, zippy storytelling, and heartfelt laughs. So indulge yourself with this little treat, and let this short remind you what soulful animation is all about.

In just about five minutes, watch Frankie the space alien as he takes over the universe by claiming property over planets one by one. Written and directed by San Charoenchai, this short film has already taken over the animation landscape as it won three Best Film awards this year and numerous selections in various film festivals.

The colors used gave the setting a somewhat dark feel to the film. And while the pacing and movements were slow despite the crimes in space involved, the creators of the film were able to perfectly reflect the mood of the very short story. The setting was made to be as fairly accurate as possible, too.

Having the same head gear as Toy Story’s Buzz Lightyear, Frankie appears to look like a robot, too–but awkward looking at that. More amusingly, the two seemed to have been created to appear as if they should lead everyone else around them.

At first, you would think that the video or computer game-like animation and sound effects were safe and comical enough for kids of all ages. That is true, of course, before Frankie starts killing inhabitants of different planets and slicing planets in half.

To show that he has conquered a planet, he plants his personalized flag on the surface of the planet just like what the astronauts did years back. He seems indestructible. But see what happens to him as he came to found his match.

3×3 by the talented Nuno Rocha delivers us a quick laugh to brighten up those gloomy days.

Awarded and selected by numerous film festival both in Spain and other countries including a recent stint at the 27+One Film Festival in Russia, this short comedy is a splendid mix of wit and great craftsmanship.

The film opens with a night watchman who spends time practicing on a basketball court. He shows his expert abilities to a simple janitor, who then uses an unlikely way to perfect shooting a ball into a basket.

Even without dialougue, the film succeeds in telling the a humorous story just by the right casts, scene cuts, and music. I love how the story perfectly fits with the 5-minute runtime. If the story was longer, it will not be as funny as it is now.

Performance wise, the actors has showed a brilliance in communicating to the viewers by mere actions and facial expressions. The absence of lines also made more room for tension and anticipation and did not add cheese and cliches in the film.

All in all, 3×3 is the perfect breather to chanel some postive vibes. So download, press play, and laugh your heart out.

Treat yourself with this award-winning short by Helena Brooks entitled Nothing Special.

Nominated to the Cannes Film Festival, this 11-minuter short tells the story of Billy who becomes the reluctant subject of worship when his delusional mother decides that he is a Jesus reincarnate.

It’s a rare thing to be mesmerized by a single film, but that is exactly what happened upon watching Nothing Special. Kip Chapman is a delight to the title role, making us laugh and feel empathy in a natural manner. Heather the eccentric mom played by Alison Routledge adds a quirky flair to the film.

The narrative is compact and solid as it bursts forth in colorful fantasia and witty dialogues. The adorable ending was also a pleasant way to close such a well-made masterpiece.

Technicality wise, using Super 16 for the shots were very effective. From the childhood of billy to the grocery scene, the production value gave justice to such a nice story.

Nothing Special is a rewarding experience oozing with a lot of creativity. The playfullness, wit, and charm of this film makes this something to add in your weekly must watch.

With over just two weeks of shooting and an independently-financed micro budget, Incredibly Small exemplifies the true spirit of independent film making.

Written and directed by Dean Peterson, this full-feature movie was premiered at the Radience Film Festival in London. And after finishing its round on the festival circuit, this 86-minuter film is now available for the World Wide Web.

The movie follows the life of young lovers, Anne and Amir, who decided to live together in a shabby 300-square foot apartment. Amir is an escalator attendant and an aspiring sculptor while Anne is a law student from a well-to-do-family.

Despite their differences, the couple hopes to build a life together. But things don’t go exactly as planned as their threatening charming neighborhood, unexpected visitors, and ambitions make them realize that maybe they aren’t as perfect for each other.

One thing that makes this film stand out is its stripped down look. The story is also funny and poignant, it’s a touchstone for anyone who recently got out of college and stuck with ideals.

The comedic nature of the movie blended with the energy of its youthful cast ensures the film’s continued appeal. I love how Anne’s (Susan Burke) mature and uptight nature greatly contrasts with Amir’s (Stephen Gurewitz) happy-go-lucky attitude. They are both naturally charming, the kind of people that you’d want to hang out with and have a great time.

Overall, Incredibly Small is an eccentric tale of contemporary youth. It’s a great comedy drama that promises top-notch narrative, visually stunning scenes, and a subtle reality check.

The other actors who starred in the film include Alex Karpovsky, Amy Seimetx, Alex Rennie, Bob Byington, Ron Lynch, Darlene Westgor, Dave Mercer, Charles Hubbell, and Eric Hisle.

Treat yourself with Calvaire Fruité, an animated short that blends pleasing visuals with spiky chuckles.

Lined with a dark humor, the 6-minuter uses the unexpected meeting of two contrasting characters as a perfect material for its limited runtime. The story is a chase between Bold, an extremely tall character who meets Dirt, a small and sickly bum who struggles for survival. It’s directed by Ghayth Chegaar, Eddy Loukil and Victor Jardel.

The film is a near-perfect portrait of the cliché “don’t judge the book by its cover”. Though Bold has a strong physique, he has a gentle heart that nobody knew. Dirt, on the other hand, is clever and street smart. These clashing personalities spark a good story and chemistry to the short.

Technicality wise, the mixture of 2D objects in a 3D environment is eye-popping. The creators had put a lot of effort in creating a well-crafted world for the two characters.

Calvaire Fruité is undeniably enjoyable as a light short, but also works as a revealing story for the two misunderstood characters. It’s that kind of film that will deliver a consistent stream of humor, a convincing heart and an unexpected ending.

Revolution is in the air and it’s happening in your own bathroom!

From the magical house of ESMA comes another animated wonder in Au Poil! (English sub-titled version) by Julie Duvernelli and Nicolas Perraguin.

This short piece takes its place in the revolting human washroom where objects have been ranked into a caste system—the glamorous jobs and the filthy ones. When the toilet scrub and cotton buds try to overthrow the lipstick and perfume spray, a messy riot is bound to happen.

The film reeks of toilet humor flawlessly sprawled throughout its 5-minute runtime. I love how it introduces us to a lot of fresh and unique characters. The production value was top-notch, from the graphics, character design, voice over and musical scoring.

Technicality aside, the story in itself is a miniature model of the proletariat system. It’s a battle for privilege and freedom executed in a humor-cracked way.

Overall, Au Poil! is a highly-amusing and visually enticing French animation with a message. It’s that kind of film that’s not afraid to get dirty.

The short features the voices of Frank Zerbib, Stephane Gourdon, Bernadette Rignac and Corinne Lecomte. It’s wonderful music is by Frederic Varot.
