The Cosmonaut is one film that has already soared above all others as the first, fully crowd funded, Creative Commons Licensed project of a grandiose scale. This beautifully shot sci-fi drama is out TODAY, FREE around the world and simultaneously on the web, TV, DVD and in the theaters.

“The Cosmonaut” is surely bound to change the relationship between content creators and their audiences and forever alter “the paradigm of understanding how to finance, produce & distribute the movie.”

Set in 1967, right of the boom of the Space Age, it focuses on three friends and their journey through life, space and the moon. “The Cosmonaut” is a film that takes viewers to a psychological, emotional and even romantic love story among its three protagonists.

The main story revolves around Stas as he “gets lost in space. When he comes back, he finds Earth completely empty. Yulia and Andrei wait for him in a collapsing world. How far would you go for love?” This subject of love and emotion plays a central role in the film.

As exciting as its story, the actual making of the film is also a journey worth being told. It’s the first film to be released under Riot Cinema Collective and has successfully used crowdfunding (raising more than 400 thousand Euros) to produce and create the entire film.

“The Cosmonaut” is much more than a movie. Is an experience that took four years in the making, pushing the boundaries of alternative distribution, copyright and financing. It’s crowdfunded (with more than half a million dollars raised), creative commons-licensed (all the raw materials will be realeased for you to reuse them and it will be online for free on our website as well as in P2P), transmedia (a feature film, 30 extra episodes, a shortfilm and two books), and with a fan-based distribution (you can organize your screening and make money!).

A film that will take you fifty years back in time, to the beginning of the Space Race, when the Soviets ruled the cosmos. Suit up and choose “The Cosmonaut” experience. If you dare.

The film is directed by Nicolas Alcala and produced by Carola Rodriguez and Bruno Teixidor starring Katrine De Candole, Leon Ockenden and Max Wrottesley. It’ll be out on a pay-what-you-want option as well. Those who choose to donate will also receive access to additional film footage and other movie details.

For an independent film, its utter uniqueness and story is well worth the watch.

Satisfy your inner film junkie with Tiger, the newest feature film by Beaufort and is written and directed by former model James McFay.

Set in the snow landscapes of Tokyo, Tiger is an intimate romantic drama that follows the story of two disillusioned models who fall in love during the winter fashion season, only to combust when their stay extends.

The movie stars models Rachel Blais, James McFay, Pierre Olivier-Beaudoin, Rebecca Victoria, Rory Stewart, and Beata Vildzeviciute. It has already played in the Zero Film Festival (LA) and won the Special Jury Prize at Japan’s Pia Film Festival.

Stylish and intricately planned may be the words to encapsulate this 57-minuter film. Using a 35mm format, the creators indulge our eyes with an absorbing series of artistically made shots. Tokyo as a setting was also maximized adding texture to the whole movie.

The story shows an offbeat romance from two characters who feel both trapped in their own world and personal circumstances. Though particular in its modeling environment, the film showcases a universal story that is wholly accessible to any audience.

For the past decade, horror movies have taken a steep decline in quality but Rising Tide is certainly a game-changer.

Premiered last August 2011 at the Tyneside Cinema with a sold out crowd, this full-feature film is a coming of age piece that will make you grab for your seats. It’s directed by Philip Shotton and Dawn Furness under Northern Film & Media production funded through Northern Film & Media’s Film Innovation Fund.

With school exams over, a group of close friends plans a final camping adventure in the tidal island of Lindisfarne. But the group’s newbie, Izzy, is hiding a dark secret that’s waiting to take revenge on the terror-stricken teens.

If you think that this is just be another film with the same-old tiring plot, well, think again. Featuring a script developed by the cast through workshops and improvisation, this is a revolutionary masterpiece for movie lovers that demand something different. The story is a melting pot of teenage desires and uncertainties, brewing them to a twisted story of paranoia, loss, and revenge.

Narrative aside, the film is also teeming with fresh faces and solid talent. The actors have opened a gateway to a deeper understanding on teen sentimentality. It’s hip, fresh, and suprisingly sweet. With over just two weeks of shooting and an independently-financed micro budget, Incredibly Small exemplifies the true spirit of independent film making.

Written and directed by Dean Peterson, this full-feature movie was premiered at the Radience Film Festival in London. And after finishing its round on the festival circuit, this 86-minuter film is now available for the World Wide Web.

The movie follows the life of young lovers, Anne and Amir, who decided to live together in a shabby 300-square foot apartment. Amir is an escalator attendant and an aspiring sculptor while Anne is a law student from a well-to-do-family.

Despite their differences, the couple hopes to build a life together. But things don’t go exactly as planned as their threatening charming neighborhood, unexpected visitors, and ambitions make them realize that maybe they aren’t as perfect for each other.

One thing that makes this film stand out is its stripped down look. The story is also funny and poignant, it’s a touchstone for anyone who recently got out of college and stuck with ideals.

The comedic nature of the movie blended with the energy of its youthful cast ensures the film’s continued appeal. I love how Anne’s (Susan Burke) mature and uptight nature greatly contrasts with Amir’s (Stephen Gurewitz) happy-go-lucky attitude. They are both naturally charming, the kind of people that you’d want to hang out with and have a great time.

Overall, Incredibly Small is an eccentric tale of contemporary youth. It’s a great comedy drama that promises top-notch narrative, visually stunning scenes, and a subtle reality check.

Die Beauty

After four years in the making, Stina Bergman‘s Die Beauty is ready to face the world.

This full-feature film written by Åsa Björklund was premiered on September 17, 2010 at the Rio Cinema, SWE Museum and at The Pirate Bay on the web. Since its release, Die Beauty had appeared on international film festivals such as the Camerimage Festival in Poland and the Barcelona Creative Commons Film Festival.

As described by its makers, the film is a surreal thriller in a feverish fairytale world. A story about friendship, alienation, family ties and kindred blood. It revolves around five redhead girls living in a small village by the river looking for something to happen. They figured a dead body would be exciting and just like in fairytales, wishes do come true.

Bergman’s approach was seamless and subtle. She sews a complete montage of the family’s lives without resorting to sappy melodramatic scenes.

What makes this film strong is its brilliant touch on gender roles and adulthood. The women here are empowered. They learn to fight and maneuver their own lives without depending on a husband, or a man. This switching of power roles adds depth to the simple village life.

I am at awe how each scene earns its sentiments without getting over manipulative and preachy. The film manages to show the absurdity of the dysfunctional adult world and how children view it.

Overall, Die Beauty is a remarkable and ground-breaking film for the Swedish and Indie movie industry. It proved that there’s also good in not conforming to Hollywood traditions. By releasing it on the world wide web, the potential audience is limitless. The piece of art will travel to different parts of the world instead of confining it within a big screen.

To Shoot an Elephant

To Shoot an Elephant is a licensed documentary directed by Alberto Arce and Mohammad Rujailah about life on the Gaza Strip. This hard-hitting film has already gained international acknowledgement and awards such as the “Most Innovative Filmmaker” at Florence’s Festival dei Popoli.

Despite the Israeli ban on foreign correspondents and humanitarian aid workers to cover and witness operation “Cast Lead” on the ground, there was a small group of international volunteers that managed to remain present in Gaza when the bombing started on December, 27th 2009. To Shoot an Elephant is therefore a collection of stories gathered by the only foreigners who decided and managed to stay embedded inside Gaza strip ambulances, with Palestinian civilians.

Backtrack on the last four decades; Gaza Strip’s situation has not been a pleasant ride; from being under the Israeli occupation until January 2006, when the Israelis imposed a total siege on its 1.5 million inhabitants. This was the country’s attempt to strangle the strip’s economy and to undermine the Hamas’ (ruling political party) government. Then on December 20, 2008, the six month truce between the Israeli and Hamas ended leaving Gaza Strip as a battle ground for an uprising war.

The documentary shows more than just moving stories from different sectors of society. It opens up with a long queue of Palestinians waiting for food, followed by an image of a United Nations relief warehouse that had stopped giving goods. These contrasting images are very powerful, as the inactivity of the warehouse and the long line of hungry people presents us with the seriousness of the humanitarian crisis.

The scenes are heart-breaking. Whether it’s the once flourishing olive plantation turned into a barren buffer zone or a playground dripping in civilian blood due to sporadic mortar hits.

I’m not trying to victimize myself; I think it’s about being fair and being just in this world. It’s giving the chance to live the way they want to and to elect and select the people who they want to represent them. -Mohammad Rajuilah

This is one of the most striking statements in the film because it came from the point of view of a normal citizen. This showed how the war affected civilians trapped in between two conflicting factions.

I admire how the film let the images speak for themselves. It doesn’t talk a lot or force opinions. It shared an impartial and honest look on the life of Palestinians during the attacks of Israelis.
Overall, To Shoot an Elephant focuses on the Palestinian’s struggle to live a normal life. The stories presented are extremely moving, you can really feel the tough conditions and the unbearable fear in the air.

Hands down to the people who have risked their life in making this excellent film, you showed the world that being a journalist is not just a profession; it’s the urge to tell the truth.

The Legend of Action Man (Dingoman Productions)

For a $200 budget, independent movie outfit, Dingoman Productions has created a funny and very entertaining film. Now, the poster might not be much to look at but trust me, this one will be worth it.

The Legend of Action Man is a 100 minute film about a guy who likes to dress up like a superhero. Everything would have been dandy if only he wasn’t the one causing so much of the problems in the first place. Think Kick-Ass minus the Hollywood costumes, special effects and budget.

Created by Derek Papa and Andy Young, the storyline was based on a short film that the duo created while they were still in high school. With more time on their hands, they’ve turned their quirky idea into a hilarious, home made film that’s worth checking out.

Like most die-hard wannabe superheroes, they’re always out there in search for the bad guys. The only problem for “Action Man” is that in his sleepy town of Sugarland, TX, there’s hardly any crime to fight. Plus, when he does set out to “help” he always ends up making everything worse. After a couple of mishaps, the authorities warn him that if he causes more trouble, he’ll be placed in house arrest.

Enter Mark, a young news intern looking for a scoop. He thinks that Action Man might be news worthy until they hear about a murder. The duo turn their sights and suspect the new millionaire, John Magnum, that just moved around the block. Will Action Man really save the day this time or is this gonna end up in a ball of flames like his previous stunts?

The Legend of Action Man might not be Hollywood flick but it gets the job done in capturing the watcher’s interest. Even though there were times when the shots got blurry and instances where the storyline was a bit confusing (it is a home made film after all) you still wanted to watch the entire thing through the end. It’s a fun and entertaining flick that’ll be worth your time.

Star Wars: Revelations (Fan Film)

Most of us cringe at the thought of fan films. We often think they’re poorly done with bad actors, horrible dialogues etc. However, there are those that make the exception. Besides if you want a movie that’s true to the craft, you are most likely to find it in a fan film.

Star Wars Revelations was released back in 2005. Unlike most fan made movies, this one was a bit more ambitious. It had a running time of close to an hour and a final budget of $15000-$20000.

The story takes place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, and explains why the Jedi Order has become extinct in the original trilogy.

Since it first came out, the Star Wars Revelations has received mixed reviews. Some had only praises for it while others weren’t so easily impressed. The film centers on a Jedi named, Taryn, who is ordered by Zhann, one of the Emperor’s hands, to rescue the remaining Jedi’s. However, the truth is that Zhann has converted into the dark side and seeks to fully destroy the order instead. As Taryn goes along, she eventually discovers the truth. In the movie she finds company with a pilot named Declan and another Jedi who still holds her in contempt for what she did while working under the Emperor’s hand.

The entire 47 minutes of the film can be downloaded in various formats. There are also extra audio commentaries from the director and special effects if you’re interested. Star Wars Revelations may not win any awards for acting, but you have to give props to the heart and passion that went into this project. Every person in the cast volunteered their services with some even pitching in their own money to help fund the film. Special effects were also pretty good considering the budget. There were even genuine moments where it was hard to tell whether this was a big budget studio movie or not. Although there’s not much to cheer about in the storyline department, anything with a cool Jedi is always worth checking out in my book.

Roskilde: The Experience 2008

Heard so much about Denmark’s infamous music festival but simply too far away to witness it yourself? Now you can do this with Roskilde – The Experience 2008. These set of movies aim to bring the feel of the festival towards various audiences from across the globe.

Roskilde is among the top five most popular festivals held in Europe. The other four include the Glastonbury Festival, the Sziget Festival, Rock Wechter and the Paléo Festival.

The films about Roskilde are created by Per Tore Holmberg and begin with the 2005 festival and up. Roskilde – The Experience is a set of movies done in order to capture the feel of the festival. Every single film is done full HD so fans of the festival and those looking to experience it, can easily grasp the moment.

The festival itself has actually been around since 1971 when it was first started by two students. Pretty soon a Roskilde Foundation took responsibility for manning the organizing of the festival each year. Every year, Roskilde is usually held for about 4 days and features a variety of musical acts.

“The bands presented at Roskilde Festival are traditionally a balanced mix of large well known artists in the absolute live elite, cutting-edge artists from all contemporary genres, popular crowd-pleasing acts plus local Scandinavian headliners and up-and-coming names. The special Roskilde feeling is in particular ensured by stages located inside large tents, catering to an enthusiastic music-loving audience. The movie itself captures what the festival is like, from the music to the crowd. Each part of the movie/documentary is like a mini-reminder of what it was like being in Roskilde for that particular festival year. It also serves as an ode to the festival makers themselves.
