Sometimes it’s the no-budget films that are more funny and striking compared to the blockbusters that Hollywood has to offer. The Notorious Newman Brothers is one of these films. It’s a dark comedy/mocumentary that departs from typical mobster films.

The film was created by Substance Production, the same group behind the “anti-romantic comedy,” Confusions of an Unmarried Couple.

It follows the story of an aspiring filmmaker named Max, who ends up working with two ‘mobsters’ as the subject of his documentary. Even though the film is two years old (it was released back in 2009), there’s still a flurry of interest surrounding it. It stars the Butler brothers and is directed by Ryan Noel.

As mentioned, the story is about wannabee filmmaker, Max who puts out an ad in the paper looking for possible subjects for his documentary. Unlucky for him, the only two people who seem to interested in the ad are The Newman Brothers, Paulie and Thunderclap.

They are mobsters but not exactly good at being one. In fact, they’re almost as horrible at it as Max is at being a director. Before Max realizes this though, he gets sucked into the world of the blundering duo where he becomes an accomplice to grand larceny (stealing ingredients for an Italian dish) to selling bootleg DVDs and more.

Although the story isn’t really that deep, the most fun part is watching the banter between the three characters. The dialogue will leave you laughing hysterically and enjoying much of the short film. Even though this is a directorial debut for Noel, he manages to impress. Like any DIY film though, the quality is basic at best. The film has the right amount of crudeness, mixed with humor and great music to make the film enjoyable. You can download the entire movie for free. It’ll be worth the effort for all the laughs it provides in exchange.

Bicentennial Curious is a third in line short, from director Jared Varava, following the releases of The Fourth and The Shadow Effect. But Bicentennial Curious differs from the previous creations in that it is not only a short but a masterfully written and directed mockumentary about a – porn industry. The movie centers around Mick Jones (played by Jon Gries – Napoleon Dynamite and Real Genius), a leader of an adult film company who is romanticizing his ‘art’ through creating, what in his mind is, a ‘socially relevant’ soft-core pornography.

“The fact of a matter is that I don’t make movies about wizards and magical forces, I make real films, real films about real tangible things (…) like love, religion, the national deficit.”

The documentary follows Mick Jones and the cast during the making of his 73rd adult picture (titled as the movie itself) – Bicentennial Curious. Interlacing sex and American history, the production features characters such as John Madams and Dwight D. Eisentower, beautiful Suffragettes, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
The most clever elements in the movie, and its main plot line, center around the interviews of the actors and the director of the production; all of which explain why working in the porn industry is their ideal career choice (especially for a character of Renée Ohio, Suffragette #5, who feels extremely uncomfortable and offended talking about culture and politics, but is more than happy to discuss sex).

However, there is also a look on the opposing side of pornography as the camera follows the townspeople who gathered right in front of the film studio with signs such as “Protest the Breast!“. As the voices of the protesters grow louder and louder disturbing the filming of the subsequent scenes of the movie, the cast and the crew decide to also take it ‘to the streets’. And so they go to face the townspeople with their own signs which read “Protest the Protest of the Breast“. (Caution: socially-relevant reference to WalMart is also included!)

Overall I found the short to be a wonderfully crafted mockumentary about, as the creators call it, ‘the making of the history in the making’. The script, written by Justin Varava, brings with it a great collection of wit and sarcasm that will surely keep you watching till the very end.
So go ahead and press ‘play’, because Mick Jones has some important things to say and its all 100% historically – not – accurate.

Starring Jon Gries (Napoleon Dynamite, Real Genius).
Directed by Jared Varava.
Written by Justin Varava.
Produced by Matt Goldberg and An Illusion of Movement.
Cinematography by Damian Acevedo.
Art Direction by Josh Inch.
Score by Brad Dujmovic.
