As said on its website, this short political horror rock musical is about a young Barack Obama who has to stave off a secret society of vampires at Harvard when he was inducted into presidency at the Harvard Law Review in 1990. Obama finds that he must convince the vampire society that opposing political philosophies can coexist or else the society may transform Obama to the dark side.

Creating and appreciating a musical takes a lot of effort, even more if its a comical allegory to politics and the vampire fan-fiction culture. In Barackula, the music and chereography gives weight to the story as it showcase a string of hummable songs which gives momentum, and holds together a clear narrative for the film.

Justin Sherman gave justice to the character of Barack Obama as he played the part flawlessly and sang well throughout. The concepts of politics, presidency, and vampires illustrated complex political ideas into a digestible, concrete way.

All in all, Barackula offers a heavy slice of politics smothered with sweet musical melodies you’ll truly enjoy.

This short musical film from Whitestone Motion Pictures has the tagline “It’s a Wonderful Life!” It is inspired by the culture of excess among people who spend just because they can.

The director, Brandon McCormick, explains that he drew the elements in this musical from his own choices and way of living, making the satire internal and easy to relate to. He does not intend to raise an advocacy though, or teach the world to live simply. He says, “It’s less about being preachy, more about projecting myself into a farcical world.”

Justin Carter as the “material man” empowered by a million credit cards is powerfully convincing and entertaining. He comes off as naturally as a person ruled by his desires and his ability to purchase anything on credit. The irony in the upbeat music and the helplessness of blinded consumers is hard to miss, which is just perfect for a satire. Nicholas Kirk and Billy Wilkerson did an excellent job on the music.

I recommend this film to everyone. It won’t take too much of your time and it doesn’t cost a cent to watch. Isn’t it good to know that in this time and age, some things are still free! Wonderful life, indeed.
