Student filmmakers Trent Hilborn and Mark Mazur’s twisty short film is anything but usual.

With a runtime of around 25 minutes, Clever is an intense psychological film with an outstanding directorial effort. It was premiered at the Reeve Union Theatre at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh.

The short tells the story of a scientist trapped in the sub-level of a science facility. Suffering from perpetual grief, he is forced to the edge and becomes the first person to breath a new life, not through reproduction, but multiplication.

Formed through serious brainstormings between the directors, the narrative offers an intriguing plot that is never what it seems. One thing that’s present to the film is its concious effort to solidify the main character. I love how the scientist background was inserted to the film without even changing location. Through this, the audience gets a clearer picture of the character’s mental and emotional stability.

The lighting was also spot on. The gloominess and darkness of each scene add a mysterious atmosphere to the story.

Stylishly made and narratively rich, Clever is that kind of film that stands out and invites multiple viewings. It’s an intricate feat of mindplay that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Blow your minds with Barackula directed by Mike Lawson and written by Justin Sherman.

As said on its website, this short political horror rock musical is about a young Barack Obama who has to stave off a secret society of vampires at Harvard when he was inducted into presidency at the Harvard Law Review in 1990. Obama finds that he must convince the vampire society that opposing political philosophies can coexist or else the society may transform Obama to the dark side.

Creating and appreciating a musical takes a lot of effort, even more if its a comical allegory to politics and the vampire fan-fiction culture. In Barackula, the music and chereography gives weight to the story as it showcase a string of hummable songs which gives momentum, and holds together a clear narrative for the film.

Justin Sherman gave justice to the character of Barack Obama as he played the part flawlessly and sang well throughout. The concepts of politics, presidency, and vampires illustrated complex political ideas into a digestible, concrete way.

All in all, Barackula offers a heavy slice of politics smothered with sweet musical melodies you’ll truly enjoy.

Experience a tense game of cat and mouse in Pizza Verdi, a 7-minuter film written and directed by Gary Nadeau. The film had already received much much attention and award from festival circuits including the Salento Fibus Terrae International Film Festival, Athens International Film and Video Festival, and BiosAgenda Online Film Competition.

It opens to a seemingly normal pizza delivery when the main character hears an angelic voice coming from the posh apartment. Upon discovering where the moving voice is coming from, a twist of power play opens up where the audience’s first speculation about the characters’ are dramtically changed.

Cast in black and white, the film makes full use oof its skilfull experimentation as each sequence is framed perfectly in artistic brilliance. The filmmakers builds the tension in between the dominating silence which is effective in giving mystery and power to the short.

Starring Maria Zamora and Norm Lewis (2012 Tony Nominee for Outstanding Actor in a Musical), you can never go wrong with the performances. The clash in each personality was clearly executed, from the status, the personality, and the music each one takes.

But even through the differences, what makes this short remarkable is how the two characters united through the power of music.

Cinematography or content wise, Pizza Verdi is a visual gem. It encapsulates a normal moment and casts layers over layers of suggestive symbolism and narrative from the characters.

It’s safe. And it just wants to be your friend. Blinky™ will definitely paint your dreams in bloody red.

Written, directed, and edited by Ruairi Robinson and funded by the Irish Film Board, this 12-minuter suspense film tells the story of a young boy who purchases a robot helper to be his playmate. But just like any child, the boy gets bored with Blinky and puts all of his frustrations and childhood pangs on the poor robot. As Blinky’s system reboots, things turn out viciously bad.

The CGI effects and cinematography of the film was surgically precise and artfully done. With a budget of 45k euro for the shoot and a visual budget of zero, the creators have transformed this film into a mini-masterpiece of great twists and imagination.

The visual effects were only done in nine months. Some of the standout scenes are those where Blinky stays out in the rain. It is really hard to make CG characters wet in the rain, but the creators have really juiced out their creative mojos to make it look realistic. The gore factor is flawlessly done that it will not leave you sick in your stomach.

The boy, Max Records (from “Where The Wild Things Are”) is a bombshell of a talent. The emotion he contributes to the scenes make a solid foundation throughout the film. His role was very important to trigger a lifeless being like Blinky, and he did it with such intensity and potential.

The film’s cinematography is by Macgregor while the nicely done music is by Olafur Arnalds courtesy of Erased Tapes.

Overall, Blinky™ is an extremely satisfying short that alternates sweetness and drama with enough suspense to give you a chilling experience. It’s that kind of film that will bring back your love and fear of robots.

This full-feature film written by Åsa Björklund was premiered on September 17, 2010 at the Rio Cinema, SWE Museum and at The Pirate Bay on the web. Since its release, Die Beauty had appeared on international film festivals such as the Camerimage Festival in Poland and the Barcelona Creative Commons Film Festival.

As described by its makers, the film is a surreal thriller in a feverish fairytale world. A story about friendship, alienation, family ties and kindred blood. It revolves around five redhead girls living in a small village by the river looking for something to happen. They figured a dead body would be exciting and just like in fairytales, wishes do come true.

Bergman’s approach was seamless and subtle. She sews a complete montage of the family’s lives without resorting to sappy melodramatic scenes.

What makes this film strong is its brilliant touch on gender roles and adulthood. The women here are empowered. They learn to fight and maneuver their own lives without depending on a husband, or a man. This switching of power roles adds depth to the simple village life.

I am at awe how each scene earns its sentiments without getting over manipulative and preachy. The film manages to show the absurdity of the dysfunctional adult world and how children view it.

Overall, Die Beauty is a remarkable and ground-breaking film for the Swedish and Indie movie industry. It proved that there’s also good in not conforming to Hollywood traditions. By releasing it on the world wide web, the potential audience is limitless. The piece of art will travel to different parts of the world instead of confining it within a big screen.

The film with non-Swedes subtitles is available at The Pirate Bay. The beautiful artwork is done by the amazing Karin Broos, check out more of her Die Beauty paintings in the film’s Facebook page.

Blow your socks off with the suspense fiction The Killing Joke.

Directed by Sebastian Lopez, this 15-minute film centers around a mysterious woman who discovers a red balloon in an almost-deserted street, and by a twist of fate finds herself facing her biggest fear. It stars Gustavo Marzo and Clarissa Staracci.

The movie pays homage to the seventies horror era by using classic elements of suspense. I liked how the transitions of sequences are flawless; you could really see that the team behind this worked extra hard. Every detail was not missed, from the empty bullets, the pulling trigger to the grand ending.

One standout feature of this short is its Hollywood quality despite of the micro budget production and the use of only two cameras. The color grading and cinematography is really well-done; most of the scenes would qualify for a mainstream movie.

The Killing Joke delves on the subject of fear and how it’s surrounding us. It tells us that fear is what we imagine and it’s up to us how to cope up with it.

Along with Lopez, this superb film was made possible by Sabrina Mottino (editor) and Colin Devlin (original soundtrack) under Little People Productions.

Turn the lights off, press play and get ready for a heart-pumping ride.

Making even Optimus Prime a bit jealous for not getting this treatment.

For a super short film, it packs in a lot of action; blown up buildings, people running around screaming, rockets launching, oh, and did I mention giant robots?Directed by Federico Alvarez, this breathtaking short film has all the makings of a big budget Hollywood movie. Talks are already swirling around that Mr. Alvarez was tapped by none other than top American producer and director, Sam Raimi, to transform this short into a full feature film or at least develop an entirely different film with Alvarez at the helm.

After seeing this short, it’s not hard to understand why this one has been generating a lot of buzz. From giant robots (which we have all come to love), to buildings being blown up, Â to a cool soundtrack and great special effects; it has it all. And for once, it’s good to see that it’s not an American city that’s being blown up. Instead, the chaos happens in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay.

Clocking in under 5 minutes, there’s not much to expect in terms of storyline. Even the director just adds the caption “Giant robots invades Montevideo!” under this video in YouTube. Pretty much, that’s about it. People have complained about that, but if you’re like everybody else, well, you don’t really care.

Maybe when a film gets developed based on this short, we’ll be able to understand why these robots suddenly went berserk and wrecked havoc on this city. However, for now, we can just sit back, relax and enjoy these cool and awesome robots run amok.
