The founding cellist of the Bang on a Can All Stars, cellist Maya Beiser is a frequent collaborator with artists across the spectrum of creativity — visual artists such as Shirin Neshat, video artists such as Irit Batsry — to produce groundbreaking multimedia concerts.
Composers who write for her follow her passion for melding influences — Middle Eastern sounds, classic and modern tones. Her newest project, Elsewhere, is described as “a CELLoOpera.” Elsewhere is an imaginative retelling of the Biblical legend of Lot’s wife, created by the “dream team” of Maya, director Robert Woodruff, composers Missy Mazzoli and Eve Beglarian, writer Erin Cressida Wilson, and choreographer Karole Armitage

From the artist:
“Imagining a solo cello concert, one would most likely think of Johann Sebastian Bach unaccompanied cello suites. As a child studying these eternal masterpieces, Bach’s music would intermingle with the singing voices of Muslim prayers from the neighboring Arab village of the northern Kibbutz in Israel where I grew up. Late at night, after hours of practicing, I would listen to Janis Joplin and Billie Holiday as the sounds of tango music would be creeping from my parents’ stereo. It all became music to me. I didn’t hear the boundaries.

I still start every day practicing playing Bach. His music never ceases to sound fresh and surprising to me. But as I was moving away from the traditional classical repertoire and trying to find new ways of musical expression, I realized that with today’s technological resources, there’s no reason to limit what can be produced at one time from a single string instrument.

The power and coherency that comes from one person hearing, perceiving and playing all the voices makes a very different experience. The excitement of a great orchestra performance comes from the attempt to have a collective of musicians producing one unified whole concept. The excitement from using multi-tracking, the way I did in the piece you will hear next, comes from the attempt to build and create a whole universe with many diverse layers, all generated from a single source. My cello and my voice are layered to create this large sonic canvas.

When composers write music for me, I ask them to forget what they know about the cello. I hope to arrive at new territories to discover sounds I have never heard before. I want to create endless possibilities with this cello. I become the medium through which the music is being channeled, and in the process, when all is right, the music is transformed and so am I.”

Jake Shimabukuro strums monster sounds out of the tiny Hawaiian ukulele, as he plays a cover of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” A sensational performance from TED2010 — it’ll send shivers down your spine.

To Jake Shimabukuro, the ukulele means more than grass skirts and loud shirts. He’s on a mission to revolutionize our perception of the four-string, two-octave instrument.

Why you should listen to him:
Jake Shimabukuro’s mother gave him his first ukulele lesson when he was 4. Ever since, he’s been experimenting with innovative techniques and sounds that cross-cut funk, jazz, rock, classical, even flamenco. From gigs at a local Honolulu café, Jake has swept onto the international stage, and now tours frequently with Jimmy Buffett. With his light-speed fingerwork, he plays original pieces and covers songs by artists ranging from Bach to Michael Jackson. His versatile sound is featured on Yo-Yo Ma’s holiday album, Songs of Joy and Peace, and Ziggy Marley’s Grammy Award-winning Love Is My Religion.

Shimabukuro is a spokesman for Music Is Good Medicine, a community outreach program that promotes healthy living through music. He travels to schools throughout Hawaii, the mainland US and Japan to inspire kids to create music and experience its therapeutic benefits. He recently forayed into the world of cinema to compose scores for the films Hoot (produced by Jimmy Buffet), Hula Girls, a hit Japanese independent film, and the Japanese version of Sideways. He just finished an album of Beatles covers, released in Japan and featuring a collaboration with Cyndi Lauper. And this past December, he performed with Bette Midler in front of the Queen of England.

“I love what I do. I’m forever thankful to music.”

Nearing it’s fifth year under the close guidance of Vincent Moon, the Take Away Show already produced hundreds of music video clip sessions with bands like Liars, R.E.M, Arcade Fire, Sigur Rós, Caribou, Architecture in Helsinki, The Shins, White Rabbits, Sufjan Stevens, Tom Jones, Phoenix, Yo La Tengo, and Block Party.

Those simplistic, informal, yet masterfully shot high-production captures of some of today‘s greatest music is made available to everyone each week as an artist or a band is invited by La Blogotheque, a French music blog, to perform.

The sessions, fully improvised, are filmed in a multitude of environments be it a street, a crowded elevator, random bus, boat with mariachi band, an office, grocery store. The unusually staged and live performances with its rough and demo-like feel, stand in opposition to the artifice of the traditional music videos and represent the founders’ vision of a single-take, organic acoustic sessions.

The Take Away Shows are a product of a unique collaboration between the Parisian filmmaker Vincent Moon (director to numerous of R.E.M’s music and video projects) and Chryde, founder of La Blogotheque, both of which wanted to shake things up and find a new way to film and share music.

Soon, what started as a unique way of capturing bands performing live at ad-hoc venues, usually in or around the streets of Paris, turned into an international project with artists from all corners of the world and it’s first Take Away Show (featuring The Spinto Band from Wilmington, Delaware) released in April of 2006. Be sure to check up on La Blogotheque’ s new international film project, Temporary Areas.

Yet another great vocal percussionist is on the loose! James “The AudioPoet” Burchfield had a funny, but jaw-dropping performance in TED Talks last February 2003. He not only showcased his talent in beat boxing, James WOW-ed the people by demonstrating his act of playing an imaginary turntable. He’s not your ordinary beat boxer; he calls himself an “audiopoet” for a reason. His different interpretation and his own created art of human beatbox gave new meaning to hip-hop.

Beatboxing is actually James’ first love. He started doing this way back his younger years. For him, it was all about creating his own art without any hesitations and hard to understand mathematical formulae. He’s actually an award-winning beatboxer in Seattle. His mimicry of sounds is simply extraordinary – a talent that places him outside the box of hip-hop.

In his performance, he exemplifies not only his matchless skill, he started his act with a little bit of humor. Honestly, at first you may think he’s kidding and not really certain of what he’s about to do, but when he began moving the imaginary vinyl on the non-existent turntable, the frenzy of clapping from the audience began as well.

“AudioPoet” holds classes for children who want to learn how to beatbox. It’s his joy to see the younger generation loving his art. His heart for what he does is actually a great example that young artist should imitate. Promoted by TED and licensed under Creative Commons, this is video is very fascinating. We promise this will make your jaw drop.

Love Hip Hop and R&B? Then this video is for you. Naturally 7 sung their way on TED Talk’s stage when they performed their song “Fly Baby.” No, there weren’t any instruments. Instead, they used their own vocals to compose a good rhythm. Beatboxing or “vocal play,” as they call it, is one of the things the group is very good at; it paved a way for them to be more creative and unique among any other Hip Hop and R&B groups.

Naturally 7 is composed of the following gentlemen: Roger “N´glish” Thomas (musical director, arranger, 1st baritone, rap), Dwight Stewart (2nd baritone), Rod Eldridge (1st tenor, scratching, trumpet), Garfield Buckley (2nd tenor, harmonica) Jamal Reed (4th tenor, electric guitar), Armand “Hops” Hutton (bass), and Warren Thomas (percussion, guitar, 3rd tenor).

In this video, the group performance a song called “Fly Baby, a single from their album “Ready II Fly.” “Fly Baby” is actually about how they started, how they strived to be unique, and how they became successful. The opened their performance with Jamal imitating the sound of an electric guitar, followed by the succession of the other member’s amazing vocal showcase. Audience in the conference cannot even contain themselves from giving a round of applause for their superb and up-beat performance. Among all TED performances, Naturally 7 is artistically exceptional.

This video is not their only performance. In fact, they are a huge sensation in Europe and they have performed as the opening act for several popular artists like Michael Bublé and German-sensation Sarah Connor. They have also performed in the late night show of Jay Leno and in several festivals. Their other videos can be view in their YouTube account. Truly, the members of Naturally 7 are beat boxers extraordinaire.

Normal music enthusiast would dare say that Jazz and Rock can never go together. It may be because it does not complement each other and the produced music will not sound good or no musician is insane enough to try. Above all these excuses, Eric Lewis proved them wrong. In the recent TED Conference, Eric showed his special skill of mixing two good and well-established genres into a great crossover of the song “Going Under,” popularized by the gothic rock band Evanescence.

Adapting such popular song is a very bold move for Eric. Admit it, only a small percentage of listeners appreciate Jazz. His performance was packed of the fierceness of rock and the great energy emitted by Jazz. He’s also very creative with his opening. Instead of using the black and white keys of the piano, he utilized the strings attached to the keys. It gave the eerie feeling of gothic rock, which suits the theme of the piece. His technique allowed him to express his connection with the piano and the combination of Jazz Rock. It was evident that he was playful and passionate, but the real essence was still there. Every touch of the piano key was truly spiritual and graceful. No doubt, that he can bridge the gap between two different worlds and make them one.

The audience offered Eric a standing ovation accompanied by shouts of amazement. It was a very superb performance indeed from a 21st century musician. This video is endorsed by TED and is licensed under Creative Commons. Video Download is available in .mp4 format.
