L5 is a slick, dark and compelling new Sci-Fi series that premieres free-to-share today on VODO in partnership with BitTorrent Inc. The crowdfunded production raised its pilot budget through the generosity of donors from sites such as Kickstarter and Indiegogo, and will use direct support from viewers to realise each new episode.

The show follows the unfolding drama of the crew aboard the spaceship Argo as they awake from hypersleep into a nightmare. Having spent the last twenty years searching for a new home to salvage humanity from a dying earth they return to find something has gone terribly wrong.

They have been mysteriously impelled 200 years into the future and find not a trace of any human life. The Argo’s Commander, Dr. Richard Adams, is determined to find some answers and, aided by the ship’s surgeon, Rod Lewis, and onboard Artificial Intelligence, Clarke, decides to explore the one clue to the massive floating O’Neill colony named L5. After an exploratory skiff goes missing inside the colony, Adams and Lewis venture inside themselves to find the answers they seek, but nothing can prepare them for what they are about to find…

L5 is directed by Stanley Von Medvey, written by Tom Ptasinski and realised in full digital splendour at Studio Hemogoblin in Chicago. The team’s goal was to create a compelling, high-production-value science fiction on a small budget. After endless hours in post production were volunteered by a talented team of visual effects artists all over the world, and with the spit and vinegar of home grown construction methods for building props, sets and costumes, as well as the unrelenting support of their families and the local art and business community in the Chicago area, the result was accomplished inside a budget of $15,000.

L5 now needs more help from the crowd! Check out what the production team can do with so little. They want to multiply that, and do even more. Pioneer One: S01E06: War of the World

Pioneer One is an original series debuting exclusively online through VODO, in partnership with valued members of our unique DISCO (Distribution Coalition). The sixth episode has just been released and it’s being currently featured on FrostWire and other distribution partners.

Show creators Josh Bernard and Bracey Smith are following their success with The Lionshare to bring a high quality product to audiences without traditional television — a “TV series without the TV.”

The series has been met with quite the enthusiasm and praise – it’s been downloaded over 3 million times now and won Best Drama Pilot at the 2010 New York Television Festival. Its also fully independently produced and crowd funded. The team collected $32k in donations, a little over a half of it’s overall budget!

In the The Series
A mysterious spaceship has entered Earth’s atmosphere. A US Department of Homeland Security investigation has uncovered a live human being in a Soviet space suit in an unstable condition. A note in Russian, found at the crash site, claims the man is the child of cosmonauts living at a base on Mars.

In the Sixth Episode
Taylor prepares to go to the public with Yuri’s story, and everyone discovers the consequences of their actions in the conclusion to Pioneer One’s first season.

Everything is a Remix

Everything is a Remix, for the few of you who still didn’t get a chance to see it, is a four-part eye-opening and conversation sparking documentary video series. Produced by Kirby Ferguson, a New York based filmmaker, the series gives us a glimpse into the world of remixing – collecting material, combining and transforming it – as any new creation requires influence. Three of the four parts of the documentary have already been released (with the 3rd episode unveiled today!) and explore everything in music, from the Sugarhill Gang and Chic to Led Zeppelin, in Part 1: The Song Remains the Same, sampling and influences from earlier works in Hollywood hits such as Avatar, Star Wars, and Kill Bill in Part 2: Remix Inc. to Part 3: The Elements of Creativity. A definite ‘must-see’!

Everything is a Remix has already gained a wide audience spanning hundred of thousands of viewers and an interest from the online community including Gizmodo, Short of the Week, and the technology section of NYTimes. In his Q&A by the Short of the Week, Ferguson explains that the inspiration behind the series came to him after seeing countless of journalists and bloggers treating plagiarism as a scandal, as a dismissal of achievements. Instead of focusing on the negative, Ferguson decided to put a more positive spin on the topic by showing real life examples of people remixing some of the already existing material and explain that this is element of creativity and is related to how all creativity happens in the first place.

Part 1: The Song Remains the Same, a first in series, provides us with a slightly different yet more than compelling look at the role that remixing, mash-ups, and sampling play in our culture, especially when we look at it through the vocabulary of Web 2.0. The short not only takes us on a journey through some of the most recognized melodies in the music industry but gives us a more detailed look into one of the most celebrated bands of the century – Led Zeppelin and some of their greatest hits that, as many uphold, stand dangerously close to ‘plagiarism’.

Part 2: Remix Inc. continues the story by taking us on a journey inside of the Hollywood hits whose greatest strength is … transforming old into the new; according to Ferguson, out of the 10 highest ranking blockbusters a year over the past ten years, 74 out of the 100 are either sequels, remixes of earlier films, or simply adaptations from books, video games, comic books, etc. Although Avatar and Star Wars are the center of this story make sure to stay tuned for one last treat waiting for you after the ending credits; a special look at Tarantino’s Kill Bill, a “closest thing Hollywood has to a mash-up”.

Part 3: The Elements of Creativity reminds us that creativity, well…. isn’t magic. Nobody starts out original. We need copying to build a foundation of knowledge and understanding. And after that… things can get interesting. The series takes us back to some of the most important inventions showing that most were either improvements on the previous ones or closely based on something already in existence. However it is when those ideas come together that the the most dramatic results come alive. So sit back and be sure to yet again keep watching after the credits!

Nearing it’s fifth year under the close guidance of Vincent Moon, the Take Away Show already produced hundreds of music video clip sessions with bands like Liars, R.E.M, Arcade Fire, Sigur Rós, Caribou, Architecture in Helsinki, The Shins, White Rabbits, Sufjan Stevens, Tom Jones, Phoenix, Yo La Tengo, and Block Party.

Those simplistic, informal, yet masterfully shot high-production captures of some of today‘s greatest music is made available to everyone each week as an artist or a band is invited by La Blogotheque, a French music blog, to perform.

The sessions, fully improvised, are filmed in a multitude of environments be it a street, a crowded elevator, random bus, boat with mariachi band, an office, grocery store. The unusually staged and live performances with its rough and demo-like feel, stand in opposition to the artifice of the traditional music videos and represent the founders’ vision of a single-take, organic acoustic sessions.

The Take Away Shows are a product of a unique collaboration between the Parisian filmmaker Vincent Moon (director to numerous of R.E.M’s music and video projects) and Chryde, founder of La Blogotheque, both of which wanted to shake things up and find a new way to film and share music.

Soon, what started as a unique way of capturing bands performing live at ad-hoc venues, usually in or around the streets of Paris, turned into an international project with artists from all corners of the world and it’s first Take Away Show (featuring The Spinto Band from Wilmington, Delaware) released in April of 2006. Bernhard and Smith’s previous collaboration, The Lionshare, found a large and receptive audience online. Building on that success, this pilot was shot for just $6000, raised through the micro-lending platform Kickstarter. Bernhard and Smith are hoping the response to the pilot will interest backers and audience members in funding the rest of the season.

This production was possible, the creators say, due the willingness of talented, professional people working for free. “From actors to composers, they did this because they believed in the project and wanted to see it happen.
