Joanna Newsom

La bel’s Friends

Italian netlabel, La Bel is only two years old but it's introducing great new talent to the world of indie folk music. Started last March 2010, the label has grown quite a bit since they started. They've become a great platform for experimental musicians who have a knack for mixing the eclectic and the melodic. On their site, they describe the label as one that loves "the sound of footsteps on the snow, internet & technology, the spring, the sun on the face, listen to music before falling asleep, (or) being alone in the middle of the night."

Montes Rook: Patience

Mixing folk music with some enchanting vocals, Montes Rook is a cool little trio from Montgomery, NY. The band is made up of Drew Guido , Jean-Marie Dean, and Noah Meyer; the members aren't exactly new in the band scene. They've spent some time in various other bands before coming together to record this sweet compilation. Drew and Noah have been friends since they were young and have dabbled with different musical genres before settling with this indie acoustic piece. Afterwards, they finally drew the courage to ask Jean-Marie to sing for them. The result was this pleasing trio and their sound.

Maria Rodes: Sin Tecnica (Without Art)

Spanish singer and songwriter, Maria Rodes, has released her latest album, Sin Tecnica. Now, I know that you might not want to listen to an album where English isn't the main language, but trust me, this is a worthy album. Maria Rodes creates folkpop indie acoustic tracks with a slightly alternative edge. Her voice is beautiful and her compositions and melodies are very pretty. Her tracks masquerade in simplicity yet are very rich and diverse.

Emilie Lund: Emilie Lund EP

Another amazing release from Aaahh Records, Emilie Lund is the latest folk genius to come out of Stockholm. Singing about her life and influences while growing up in a countryside town in Sweden under the wing of former hippie parents, Lund brings a fresh take onto the world of folk music. Her music is soothing and melancholic; soothing in its capacity to stop time and melancholic because it can make for a great background track to your homesick emotions and melancholia.
