VODO Mixtape #1

FrostWire & FrostClick have supported VODO releases since the beginning and we've enjoyed every single one of them. This month we would like to present the first of VODO mixtapes - compilations of short films by creators who want their content to be distributed on the P2P network and beyond, freely shared and seen by as many people as possible. This installment contains six shorts: Gilbert, Prebloc , Bitter Sweet, Luckiest One, Lilah & Watch Alice Bleed.

netwaves 4.20: what the funk! – compilation from NetWaves weekly radio show

NetWaves is a Dutch weekly radio show/podcast digging into the best in free & legal music licensed under Creative Commons licenses. The podcast specializes in electronic music all kinds, from deep house over electro to indietronic. This weeks' release is the first not to contain the Dutch dialog in between the songs and presents the tracks in the play list format giving it a sort of weekly "best off netlabels" compilation feel which we love!

Alive and Well at The Trash Bar – a music documentary on NYC rock, punk & metal scene

In 2006 New York City lost two of it's most beloved and influential rock and roll music institutions. But CBGB and Continental were merely victims of a larger epidemic - the corporate takeover of lower Manhattan. Little did anyone know at that time that a seemingly run-of-the-mill music venue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, would, by a series of fateful events, take over to carry the torch and continue a longstanding New York City tradition. In an age when big business rules all, it's true that a rock and roll club can still manage to live up to a core set of values held near and dear to the hearts of thousands of music fans, the legacy of the NYC rock and roll movement, and the idea of what that movement represents to those who have only read about it. Welcome to The Trash Bar!

Robin Sloan’s “Annabel Scheme” – free novella download licensed under Creative Commons

Robin Sloan, a San Fransisco-based writer best known for his short stories and writing at culture blog Snarkmarket, recently completed work on his first novella, Annabel Scheme. Sloan used Kickstarter, a social fundraising platform, to garner patrons for Annabel Scheme prior to publishing. By offering a number of incentive levels with varying amenities, Sloan was able to raise just shy of $14,000 for the project – over $10,000 more than he had originally asked.

K3DSurf – Open Source 3D Surface Generator

I can bet that K3DSurf would be a dream to have for any math geek if they would only know about it. This nifty application allows you to visualize and manipulate Mathematical models in three, four, five and six dimensions. K3DSurf supports Parametric equations and Isosurfaces.

MixGalaxy’s Various Artists “Winter Tales” Compilation Album

Here is another great release from this fresh new netlabel. Filled with 15 very different tracks from an array of independent artists, "Winter Tales" has a track for everyone. This winter Mixgalaxy Records prepared for you this very special compilation full of mystery and fairy-tale spirit with snowy scent of cold winter nights spiced with catchy melodies and grand arrangements.

The Lionshare

The Lionshare is the debut feature from writer/director Josh Bernhard. Shot the independent, almost student way - with consumer video cameras, barely any lighting or audio equipment and friend actors on a close to nothing budget - its an engaging, young movie definitely worth a download. Relying on naturalistic dialog and a barebones aesthetic to match the bare honesty of its characters, The Lionshare is a personal look at life and love in an increasingly impersonal world.
