The Internet is a fun place, but we all know there are online scams, hacked sites and so on, and if you are worried about privacy and security, having a utility like Web of Trust (WOT) can come in handy. This browser add-on, available for Firefox, Chrome, IE, Safari and Opera, tells you which websites are the most trustworthy based on user experiences and ratings.

Just download the plugin that’s right for your browser and install it. In the Firefox version, you will see the WOT trust meter bar between the search and address bar, and it will give you instant feedback on the websites you visit, so no tweaking required.

If the site has been deemed trustworthy, it has a green light, then it turns to yellow and red as the danger goes up. Just click the rating for the site to get more information, and you can add your own experiences and opinions when you create a free WOT account. You can also share these on social media of course.

As was pointed out above, you’ll need to create an account to share your feedback, but if you don’t want to, that’s fine: the plugin will run fine without it. But it makes sense to sign one. It’s easy (you can sign in via Facebook) and second, it helps the plugin get more information about websites which can only help you and others in the end. The plugin doesn’t get in your way, and you can get to the settings by clicking its icon. Other options are available, but for casual web surfers the default setting will do fine.
