The Internet revolution has come. Some say it has gone. What was responsible for its birth? Who is responsible for its demise?

In The Future of Ideas, Lawrence Lessig explains how the Internet revolution has produced a counterrevolution of devastating power and effect. The explosion of innovation we have seen in the environment of the Internet was not conjured from some new, previously unimagined technological magic; instead, it came from an ideal as old as the nation. Creativity flourished there because the Internet protected an innovation commons.

Notes and Scratches is a pop (maybe even pop-rock) band from Chicago. They've been together since 2005 and to date released one other album entitled "Uh-Oh" (which is also licensed under CC and available for free download here). Now, after two years and two line-up changes, Notes and Scratches is ready to present their second record, "To the Other Side." Joshua Dumas, the principal songwriter, described this collections of pop songs as “the spaces between things: between past and present, remembering and forgetting, forever and never again.” He adds “this recording is an attempt to make sad songs feel celebratory. Regret and hindsight are often more complicated than a series of minor chords can reveal. I am hopeful these songs reflect some of that depth.”

Tiara has been singing since she was a child and it seems like she can't imagine her life any other way. She grew up in Pittsburgh, PA singing in a choir and on her own until her senior year of high school, but her career really took of when she moved to Washington D.C. to attend Howard University. She started meeting like-minded people who loved music as much as she did, giving her the confidence to work even harder towards her dream. Not much later Tiara met her current manager, Mic Sean, at one of D.C. music venues and everything started falling into its right place.

Star Trek Movie is coming out very soon (May 8th, 2009) and it looks like it's going to be a great visual experience. I must admit that the dialogs also seem more genuine and better written, but since we should never judge the book by it's cover, I will hold on with my thoughts till after I see the movie. For now - enjoy the trailer!

Last year I featured Hungry Lucy’s 2006 release Before We Stand—-We Crawl. While this appeared to have been an experiment with Creative Commons licensing, the band found the experience enlightening and has released a video (below) to explain why they endorse CC. It is great to see a really creative group like Hungry Lucy, especially one that is celebrating 10 years of existence, recognize the benefits of this form of licensing and distribution. Since then the band has made the decision to release other albums that are under their control through a creative commons license.

Dynamoe is quite a unique electronica band from Denmark. They've met almost by accident in 1997, when both Giovanni Campagna and Dennis Lee were signed by the same label. After a long chat, they've discovered they have so many ideas in common that working together was almost a given... They've recorded three singles under a Belgian label R&S Records and ultimately released their first record "Jump Start" in 2001 under sub label Apollo. Both the singles and the album were very well reviewed by the press and the music industry, so the duo, with their supporting musicians, went immediately back to work. "Coming Home" is the band's second album and it was ready for press in December of 2003. In 2007, Dynamoe has released their latest recording, "In the Wake of Time", and all three are now available for donation/free download at www.dynamoe.com.
